  • Tony Rice Acceptance Speech into the International Bluegrass Music Awards Hall Of Fame 2013. Presented by Sam Bush & Peter Rowan.
Friends if you joined us online Thursday night for the IBMA Awards, you saw this remarkable moment and we're pleased to present it in full. Tony Rice is one of the most important bluegrass musicians in history. His guitar playing has influenced more pickers than anyone else. But he was also a beloved singer who sounded like nobody else. For nearly 20 years though, he's not been able to sing due to a complex vocal condition. But here he stuns the IBMA Awards audience with a glimpse of that voice we've loved so dearly and missed so much. Thanks for your patience as we processed this piece and thank you for asking. It was perhaps the most talked about moment of this remarkable week at World of Bluegrass in Raleigh.

Please forgive me for just now seeing this reply! True story, I met Tony here in Pulaski Va. in the local Long John Silver! Many many years ago. He was riding to a gig in with a friend in a Mustang. They pulled off the interstate for food and I happened to be standing in line behind him! I was so excited just to see him up close like that. I spoke to him, and let him know (quietly) that I knew who he was and did not want to bother him, but let him know I was a HUGE fan of his music and appreciated him for sharing his gift and inspiring us all. I can not thank you enough for reaching out. He signed a business card for me (which unfortunately was lost in a house fire). I meant every single word I said, Tony is a treasure with God given ability. He will forever be a "musical influencer". God bless you and yours! I pray this message finds you well.

Was looking at something completely unrelated when I ran across this Tony Rice speech by "accident." (Are there really such things as "accidents"?) I'm a singer/songwriter, and I was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a vocal cord condition that severely restricts my use of my voice. I have long suspected there is a mental component to the problem. Seeing and hearing Tony use his real voice by what seemed to be sheer willpower (with a strong dose of faith and grace) was more inspirational to me than I can say. It was a true blessing. God Bless you Tony Rice for your courage, grace, generosity, and, of course for sharing your unique talent. You truly are an inspiration to us in so many ways!

I am honestly not sure who would give this video a thumbs down! I am not trying to be terrible, but whoever gave this a thumbs down needs to realize that this guy has been one of the very best singers and musicians that has ever been on this planet! I know that I was just a young man when I first heard Tony Rice sing and play. It was something that influenced me in a very powerful way! It inspired me to pick up a guitar and to really practice and aspire to reach a level of decency! To see him in this manner is very hard! I have missed hearing him sing, and play. He had such a gift and it hurts to see him unable to sing the way that I first heard him. He has not been able to talk or sing for almost 20 years so to hear him in this manner is nothing short of amazing. You guys that gave this video a thumbs down needs to go and look up some old Tony Rice and simply listen to his God given gift. Look up Tony Rice Church street blues then come back here and watch this video with a different set of eyes! God bless you Tony! You are a national treasure!

Tony Rice is by far, the biggest influence, next to my dad and brother...He inspired me as I was learning to play the guitar in a way that’s so unorthodox, yet so bad a** , that it cannot be rivaled!! Thank goodness for Clarence White for inspiring the great “Tony Rice” whom has blessed the Bluegrass and Jazz world... And thank goodness for Old Martin Guitars, lol... Tony is a national treasure. I met Alison(and Sam Bush) on 11/16/2015 just a couple weeks ago in Nashville and I asked her about Tony Rice, and she told me to my face, Tony is her hero and loves him more than he will ever know. That's a very classy comment about a very classy person. This genre of music has so many "down to earth" and " warm hearted" people. I think is attributed to their strong faith. Sam Bush was also a class act and so nice to talk to.

I'm still stunned by the news of his passing. My introduction to bluegrass was in the mid 80's. It was a very small venue in Atlanta. Norman and Nancy Blake opened. It was the Tony Rice Unit. I left that show completely blown away. I had never seen someone pick so well. Nobody can or will ever come even close to Tony's flatpicking style. A true originator! Thank God Tony has left behind such a massive amount of timeless tunes. The Pizza Tapes w/ Garcia and Grisman is a classic example of how he could impress and gel so well in an improv setting with other respected musicians. You sir, will be forever missed!

Many of us wanted to hear a new album or wanted to see him onstage but taking a rest was absolutely needed. He gave us beautiful music from unchartered territory with the guitar as well as incredible vocals for over 43 years. My lord and savior wanted a new musician in the angel band so he summoned Tony Rice home.

Learn from the roots of bluegrass. Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin are among the very best and have influenced players for more than 75 years. Today's older stars, 60 and up played with these guys on their way up. One influences another and he in turn influences a young kid to play bluegrass. Tony Rice may be the best in his field. Ralph Stanley, Lester Flatt and JD Sumner brought young players into established bands and they became stars. Enjoy our wonderful bluegrass music and spread it around!

Thank You for sharing this. Tony is a legend and an inspiration. He is one of the main reasons I learned to play guitar and his playing has frustrated me for years!!....because I still can't do it! I know one day he will sing for us again!!!

Rice proves here that, even without a guitar in hand, he is a true virtuoso.

My mother liked bliegrass music. I couldn't stand it ( I was a 1970s Top 40 geek as a kid) until my brother brought home some Clarence White and Tony Rice records, the green jacketed one. It completely opened me up to all kinds of music. His music has provided me with comfort and inspiration throughout the last four decades. I was lucky enough to see him perform live many times. Thank you, Tony.

Amazing. ABSOLUTELY Amazing! Thank you Mr. Rice for everything you have done. You have inspired a billion calloused fingers, lifted a gazillion troubled hearts and inspired all of us with your strength and resilient spirit. Please don't be offended, I'm from the country, and I mean this with all the reverence in the world - but if Karo syrup could talk, it would sound like you! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my father was a long time musician who lost his voice. I swear I had tears in my eyes the whole time. God bless Tony Rice.

I didn't know that he had lost his voice until
recemtly when I pulled out some old VHS instructional tapes, and I wanted to seeming there was anything recent on YT. When I heard his interview from 2012 talking about Clarwnces dread, I was shocked, but nowhere near as shocked as I just now watch his acceptance speech at the IBMA Awards. What an inspiration. He is everything that a musician and a gentleman should be. God bless TR.

I grew up listening to, learning from, and generally admiring him. I didn't fully appreciate the impact he's had on my life until I learned of his passing just a few days ago. I wouldn't be the musician and singer I am today if not for his influence during my youth. He was a generational talent, an all-time great... may he rest in peace.

I was crushed when I first hear back in January of '21, that he had passed. I can see from this captured moment, he'd not been well for quite some time.
I doubt there was a dry eye in the whole house once he was done speaking. I know I had to wipe a few away. Hope to meet you in the hereafter Tony. God Bless.
