Guthrie is livin' the dream! I saw the Tony Rice Unit at the Red Mile Racetrack in Lexington, KY in the early '90's. I really loved the way Tony was no flash or gimmicks. He would stand in the same place on the stage for the entire concert and just play his guitar, (The Antique), like nobody else in the world can play. Very business like, but at the same time pulling more emotion out of that wooden box than you can imagine...didn't talk much, just let the guitar do the talking.
Tony Rice was and is the GOAT.
I was so lucky to have been best friends growing up with Charlie Burleson younger brother of the banjo player Jason Burleson from the band Blue Highway. Years before Jason ever helped form Blue Highway we would travel all over Tennessee and North Carolina to see The Unit or go to festivals Tony was playing at. I saw him dozen and dozens of times and he is and always will be my favorite musician.
I was lucky enough to be in his orbit off and on for years because we had lots of friends in common. Though I never got to pick with him, I didn’t care about that at all. What a blessing. He truly was and is The Man.

I saw Tony and Jerry both (at different times) playing with JD Crowe at the Holiday Inn in Lexington when I moved there for college. Lexington was hot in those days for great bands and players. New Grass Revival, Seldom Scene, Doc Watson, Norman Blake, on and on, all came through town regularly. Been a huge fan ever since.
I saw him a few times late in his career when he played in North Texas. I also was able to attend a workshop he led and was just mesmerized as was everyone else. There is a great book about his life that was put together by Tim Stafford called Still Inside The Tony Rice Story. I can't recommend it enough. You should try to interview Tim Stafford about that Otis.

Tony Rice was a big influence on me and many others down under in the bluegrass scene in Australia. His solos were mindblowing 2 of my favourites are him playing Monroes hornpipe bluegrass at its best and hearing him on the album Hot Dawg doing the jazz bluegrass crossover was another dimension. His solo on the every track is is out there towards jazz but the first Track Dawgs Bull is out of this world Tony goes out on a limb highlighting his genius as not just a bluegrass guitarist but jazz as well. Stephen Grapelli played violin on that album with Darol Anger one of my favourite albums give it a listen its as good as it gets.
Tony played guitar like a lot of people don't. ❤

I knew Tony for a little bit in the early aughts and his two dogs were named Django and Mingus. Yeah he was a jazz guy for sure.
I discovered Tony when I bought the album Hot Dawg with David Grissman....he blew me away....didn't know Guthrie played with Jerry Douglass either..hey Otis...I'd love if you could interview Tony Mowatt one day

I saw Tony at Merlefest in North Wilkesboro back in the early nineties. Heck of a musician.
Guthrie is a lot like Kenny Vaughn. Both lead charmed lives in my opinion. Enjoy their stories. I’ve seen video of Guthrie and Kenny playing together. Great music!

Bill Amatneek’s recent book on Tony with interviews with Jerry Douglass, Sam Bush, Bela, etc. can’t be recommended enough. Tony gave the impression of being totally together to those of us on the outside. But, underneath, was really, really struggling.
He will make you want to pick up a guitar, and then he will make you want to throw it out of your window 😮
Also, I did get to meet Guthrie’s uncle about ten years ago in Brevard. Carl and Sandy Beason introduced me and told me all about Guthrie before I knew anything about him. Orbits are essential.
I have Tony Rice and Bill Monroes autographs they were in Utah the promoter screwed them and give away to many tickets and Monroe said let's see if we can make up some revenue and they sold album's and autographs

Thanks again Otis. Any chance you guys would play the four corners folk festival in Pagosa springs, Colorado over Labor Day sometime. Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, and Darryl Scott play it often and Sam Bush is head lining this year. It’s a cool festival.
