    *********************
    Welcome to another video review from All Things Secured. I’m Josh and my goal is to provide a clear review of NordVPN based on years of using the software, and I’m going to try to be as unbiased as possible.
    I’m going to show you the desktop & mobile software, explain the various features they offer, compare them to other VPNs on the market and finally share with you my concerns.
    In my opinion, NordVPN continues to offer one of the best pieces of VPN software on the market. It’s incredibly easy to install and is very user-friendly, even for those of you who aren’t very tech savvy.
    But design only takes you so far. Let’s dive into the various features NordVPN offers.
    These kinds of features include, at the time of this recording:
    - AES 256-bit encryption;
    - Over 5,500 servers spread across 59 countries;
    - A VPN Kill Switch
    - A Zero-log policy;
    - Email & live chat customer support;
    - Dedicated apps for desktop, mobile, browsers, smart TVs, routers and more;
    - 30-day money back guarantee;
    None of the features on this list are special. Any VPN you’re considering should have this.
    So what NordVPN features are unique?
    - Simultaneous connections: NordVPN currently offers 6 simultaneous connections, which means that you can connect with six different devices at once. The industry standard is between 3-5, so NordVPN comes out on top here.
    - Double VPN: For those who want even more security, NordVPN offers the ability to connect through two VPN servers, changing your IP address twice. While there are a few other VPNs that offer this as well, such as Surfshark, it’s not very common.
    - P2P and Onion over VPN servers, which if these words don’t mean anything to you, that probably means the feature itself won’t be a benefit to you either.
    - CyberSec is a combination advertisement and malicious website blocker offered by NordVPN.
    - Nordlynx, which is a fancy name for NordVPN’s implementation of the WireGuard protocol. It’s a protocol that is still under development, but so far, it’s been touted as one of the fastest, most secure VPN protocols available today, even beating out OpenVPN.
    The only concern worth pointing out is the issue of trust.
    The reason for this is twofold:
    First, it’s not entirely clear who owns and runs NordVPN. I mean, it’s based in Panama and owned by a company called Tefincom S.A., but that’s about all we know. This is a red flag for me personally since what’s basically happening here is we’re securing our data by routing it through the servers of an unknown entity.
    To be fair, this same accusation can be made against most popular VPNs. With few exceptions, such as VyprVPN or IPVanish, most VPN companies tend to be extremely vague about their ownership.
    The second concern in regards to trust has to do with a security breach that happened on a server NordVPN was leasing back in early 2018. As you can imagine, a security company being hacked garnered a lot of press.
    Based on my research, however, it’s ironic that this security breach concerns me less than the opaque ownership. The reason is that not only did this breach not compromise any user privacy, it also resulted in numerous internal and external audits on the NordVPN servers that have probably made it one of the more reliably secure VPN server networks you can use.
    So what’s my final verdict on NordVPN?
    It’s an amazing piece of software that ticks all the right boxes in terms of features you expect to have with a VPN. As far as security is concerned, NordVPN is ahead of the competition in its adoption of new protocols like WireGuard as well as the way it has gone about auditing its server network and security protocols.
    My only concern, and it’s the same one that can be leveled against many other VPNs today, is that I have no idea who runs NordVPN and what kind of accountability they have.
    When it comes to your data security and online privacy, you’re caught between trusting the devil you know versus the one you don’t.

    I signed up for NordLocker for a year but found that I didn't use it much so 2 weeks before it expired, I cancelled the renewal. Nord pulled out clause buried within their T&Cs saying they could take the next year's payment 2 weeks before the existing contract expired. I challenged this given they took payment on the day I cancelled but they refused to refund the payment. I had been considering subscribing to NordVPN but because the Nord helpdesk insisted on nickle & diming me I lost any trust I had with the company. No trust - no business.

    I am a physician in private practice running MacPractice, a macOS based software (just upgraded to Catalina). The medical software I use has a server app and and a client app. The server app resides on the server computer in the office and the various work stations in the office connect to the server database through the client app. My question is, can I use NordVPN (or any other VPN service) to connect remotely (e.g from home or a hotel) to connect my client app on my to the server app in the office? I can seem to find how to do this on the NordVPN site or the Express VPN site for that matter. (MacPractice does not recommend any VPN services or protocols.)

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      While what you're referring to is technically a "virtual private network", it's not the same as the commercial versions such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN. You're going to need to set up your own VPN that connects you directly to your office. There are plenty of solutions for this, including ones from Cisco and other IT companies.

      On the heels of the breech, I had no problem getting NordVPN to cancel my subscription and provide a partial refund. I think they were pretty embarrassed about their executives choosing to sit on the security breech for weeks and weeks. However, I had an exceptionally difficult time cancelling ExpressVPN. I tried to cancel on their website, but it wouldn’t accept the cancellation. It was only after thirty minutes of torture with a CSR via chat, that I was able to confirm that my subscription would not auto renew. I’ve switched to IVPN and couldn’t be happier.

    I tried several VPN's overseas and all of then NordVpn, expressvpn etc had one serious issue the speed would drop from 40mps download to 4mps download and I spend all my time configuring the servers is this still the case. My best solution was a router that acted as a vpn server in one of my offices in US that I totally controlled. Unfortunately these router's apparently are hard to find do you know of any? Thanks

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Pƙed 4 lety +2

      Hey Jack, I completely understand the speed issues - I've had my fair share of frustration as well. The only comfort I had was the fact that I had over 10 active VPN subscriptions and when one of them was slow, all of them were slow. I had concluded that in most cases, it wasn't always a server issue as it might be an issue with how my international ISP or even the country I was living in was trying to limit VPN activity.
      A lot of the new connections, such as the NordLynx protocol I talk about here, tend to fix some of these problems, so that might be worth a try. I'm not a big fan of using a VPN on a router since it's not as convenient to configure.

      The protocols available depend on which kind of platform (i.e. device) that you're using. UDC and TCP are different version of the OpenVPN protocol, which are both secure and reliable, so you shouldn't have a problem using them. Try installing the software on another device, though, and see if you can get access to NordLynx as an option.

It does offer a significant amount of servers with good speeds compared to others but if your looking for anonymity there is way better options. Lol. 3-5 connection is industry standardđŸ€Ł
    I’ve only ever used Surfshark (unlimited devices) and Proton (10 devices). Was I just really lucky or is 3-5 actually standardđŸ„Ž

      The standard is changing, possibly, but I’d say 5 is still average.

    Ask NordVPN why its Android application needs so many permissions to run? The Android application of the VPN I use asks for and needs no permissions. Also, AirVPN does no advertising, owns no "review" websites, pays no "influencers" ... oh, and so much more.

      If you don't see double VPN or onion over VPN, you need to go into the settings and change the VPN protocol to "OpenVPN". Once you do that, all the other server options will show up for you. I hope that helps!

    That’s peculiar: In the previous video (which I just finished watching), you said you’ve been using ExpressVPN for the past few years. So, which is it? ExpressVPN or NordVPN? It’s a bit difficult to accept your advice as credible when you contradict yourself like this.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Pƙed 2 lety +20

      You have to understand something: I’ve lived in China for many years and used multiple VPNs concurrently since my business is my livelihood and it was a risk to lose access to uncensored internet. So when I say that I’ve been using both ExpressVPN and NordVPN, I’m not lying.
      Obviously I can’t force you to believe me, but ten years in China will teach you a thing or two about VPNs.

      I've read a lot of conflicting data about Tesonet. And the term "data mining" doesn't mean much to me at this point - pretty much every tech company nowadays does some sort of data mining. Again...it all boils down to trust.

    Be wary if you are using Nord VPN on a MAC with M1 chip and monterey operating system. This VPN significantly slowed down my connection. After the OS update, it stopped working outright. Simply put, because I am over the 30-guaranteed period, there will be no reimbursement. Policy is policy they say. That doesn’t make it right in my book. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE, go with a different VPN. Horrible service, destroys your internet connection, brutal customer service who will just drag you through the mud, no reimbursement of funds beyond the first 30 days after purchase. Bad product, not recommended."
