NOTE: Some users have been having trouble exporting/importing projects, I dunno why, that's a Roland question BUT try importing this one as a test: bit.ly/3uUx80G - I know it works coz it's the one I use.

Image Format to work with the SP-404 MK2's OLED screen:
1-bit BITMAP (*.BMP)
Width: 128 Pixels
Height: 64 Pixels
(This is monochrome, no other colours or shades of grey, straight pixels being turned on or off.)
NOTE: To do this you need to have updated your firmware!
Install Instructions:
1. Export PROJECT to SD-Card [SHIFT + PAD 14] - this can be an existing project or a new one.
2. Copy PROJECT to IMPORT folder - the new project can be found in the Export/Project folder. The new project's folder name doesn't have to stay the same, it can be renamed to anything you like (say "Live Set" or "Beattape" etc). In this video I've created a new project (with no samples / patterns) for this, the advantage is 1) it's faster to import/export, and 2) next time I want to create a new project I can simply import this one again so to again have the startup images I'm about to copy over.
3. Copy Custom images to PICTURE folder .
4. Replace original STARTUP images with CUSTOM ones - delete the original startup images (copy the file name first to make life easier) and rename your custom images exactly as the originals were. Specifically "startup_1.bmp" and "startup_2.bmp".
5. Import PROJECT back to SP-404MKII [SHIFT + PAD 14] - select a new Pad (or overwrite the old one if you're a bit of a daredevil) to import the project to.
6. Open PROJECT then restart SP-404MKII - when I switch any device off then on again I like to take a breath before switching it back on. I think it might be bad for it to switch electrical things off n on too quick...
I prefer to make my images in Photoshop but not everyone has it so I made an example in Paint. I dunno what Mac users have...never been one...there are also some really decent pixel art programs (cheap / free ones too) out there that look like they would be really good for this.
Lastly, you might have a logo or image you want to use but it's not the right format, EVERYTHING is bigger and has more colour depth than this. In my experience so far there is no magic trick to shrink it down and reduce it to 1-bit cleanly. You might have some luck scaling it down then trying to trace it on another layer in Photoshop but that hasn't always worked out well for me...

@@Nonjuror I think for many people finding a well laid out tutorial set(course) like you did for the SX for the MK2 would be fantastic. A grass roots from beginning to end course is really difficult to find. I had friends who suggested your ChopMag tutorials and it was exactly what I was looking for for.
on a side note my unit just arrived having been ordered beginning of March...just got it out the box and found the second knob is sticking....great!

i'm on a mac and couldn't get it to work when creating a new bmp file from scratch, but this ended up working for me- opening up the factory bmp files in photoshop FROM the SD card, pasting the new bmp art over it and then save/overwrite, keeping the same filenames

There were no pictures in the folder first but after i did a factory reset everything worked out as you described. Thank you!

I got my sp yesterday and I feel really dumb ImaoI had same issue with the start up image not showing but I followed the steps renamed my custom image startup 1 and 2 but and it was on project 3 for me I forgot in my sp settings I had it saved to load project 1 I realized that and changed it to load recent project and it worked im so happy now got my sp and now customizing things
I don't have one, nor the talent meaning it's worth getting one but this is very cool, great video.

Im trying to do this on my chromebook laptop and for some reason there's nothing in the folders when i open them
Having issues with the "PICTURE" folder being empty or not there? You're not alone, there's a lot of conversation about this in the comments section, here's what I think should help:
First make sure you have (in this order):
- Updated your Firmware (v1.14 is the latest when I write this)
- Format your SD Card in the SP-404MKII
Now:
- Create a new Project
- Export the new Project
Hopefully now when you put the SD Card into your computer and open the "PICTURE" folder it is there and has the stock *.BMP images in it!
Please let me know if this works!
EDIT: Okay, so it appears that this still hasn't resolved the issue for a handful of people, beats me what's up with this...so I've uploaded my own fresh "Project_X" folder that I use myself so I know it works, it's loaded with the expected *.bmp files which you can then swap out. Download then unzip the PROJECT_X folder into the IMPORT* folder on the SD CARD: www.dropbox.com/s/9pr7b2g188vex9m/PROJECT_X.zip

Actually just figured it out,
For anyone who's picture folder is empty, just drag the 2 images you want into the picture folder, rename them startup_1/startup_2 like Nonjuror says, but when importing it back onto your mk2...Overwrite the same pad you exported from, don't choose a new pad....Worked as soon as i reset the mk2!

It was a video I made, not actual animation on the mk2 (that would be sick as screensaver!). I made three versions of the skeletor startup with his jaw lowering, filmed them separately and stitched it together.

please help how to make animation like gif for screen saver. all I did was when the picture moves from right to left one after another
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it supports a bit depth up to 24 bits but can only be monochromatic? I'm asking because Krita wont let a lower bit depth of 8.
That’s my understanding too but I’ve only ever used 1-bit - I think even if you render it in 8-bit it still can actually be a 1-bit design (just black & white, no shades of grey).
so every customized opening screen is linked to the specific project, is not opening in general whenever you switch on the unit? In other words, you cant add it to pre-existing projects with beats on em because loading will erase all of the stuff.. am I right?
Yep, it’s part of the project rather than on the machine like you said. If you have a pre-existing project you want to change the startup images of you can export the project, change the image files then import the project back onto the mk2, shouldn’t be erasing anything.

My sp404 has been randomly restarting since I changed my Screensaver. Anyone know a fix for this?

yo maybe yall can help me out in this one, When i open the image file, inside project, on the computer it does not show me the images that where already there, like i cant delete anything because theres nothing, so i add the new images and rename them, import to my sp again and nothing happens....... i formated the sd card 2 times already
Maybe the files are hidden? but they should be there but if you on windows then check show hidden files.

I don’t know what the Mac equivalent of Paint is but there’s plenty on free/cheap design programs out there designed for pixel art.
Screen savers are the same format / size as the startup screens so mine can be use as savers.

Yeah, that's a bug that some people get although I haven't gotten it since this latest firmware update, when that happens I restart the 404, try import thing the project again and I do it to a new pad (not overwriting one). Was this a new Project you made and exported after you last did the 1.14 firmware update?
@@Nonjuror Yeah exactly, my firmware reads version 1.14. I also tried creating a new blank project on another pad but once again the file reads unsupported when I try to open it. I'll try again a few times then factory reset it I guess and reinstall the firmware update and all my damn samples 🤧
If starting from square 1 doesn't fix the issue I'm guessing you dont do refunds since the images will be unusable for me 😅

factory reset? jeez, this not that hard if you go the right files so do a export of a project and the files are there then edit those and safe back on the same location overwriting the old one

Can I have different startup screens for different projects? Nvm, just switched banks and it reverted back to the factory startup screen. Then went into the project with the file and restarted and found it IS bank specific. Woohoo

I was looking for a jpeg to bmp converter tool for an image. I downloaded a random one and another one online, and the output was a bunch of numbers. Is there a convert tool?
Nothing I can think of outside of just a Save As in Paint, sorry. If there’s something out there than can reduce a jpeg to 1 bit and resize it accurately that would be amazeballs, every resizing experience I’ve had was a mess that I had to trace again in photoshop.

@@Nonjuror hey good point, i spend a little time on that struggle and i finally found a way… so here is a instruction for all with the same problem…
- Format your sd card!
- Update to 1.14 (the latest version right now)
- no you should have the folder „pictures“ (in my case the folder was empty, not as shown in that video… so i just copied my pic in this empty folder and renamed it same like in the video).
- last step, dont forgett to load the project from your sp… here we go.

In theory, if you now create a new project then export it, it should have all the image files in the folder…
What version is your firmware? I'm on 2.0 and I can't even find the folder with the startup.bmp files. Theres a picture folder but even that is empty.
That’s weird thing, not sure what’s causing that. This video predates the v2.00 firmware, not sure which version it was but out of curiosity I just tried now with v2.00 and it worked as expected, I see the folder & bmp files. Lotta people seem to bump into this, let me know if you solve it.

Same for me, my laptop doesn't have an sd card reader so had to buy one that plugs in via USB c, I think this might be why it isn't working.

I followed the directions exactly... It didnt work for me...? I am on the latest 1.14 firmware. I also did see any of those .bmp default setuo images or screensaver images. My card was formated on the SP. It did ad the folders as seen in the video but it did not add picture files.
What should I do?
Maaaaan this is like the 5th time I’ve seen this happen to someone, you’re not alone. I really like the MK ones, the dragon logo I drew pixel by pixel from scratch which took foreeeever…and the fight scene I redrew Game Boy screen shots…pixel by pixel…
@@Nonjuror thanks I got it, its working! Only thing is the screen savers dont display, its still showing the default geometric pattern Screensaver when the unit sits for awhile.
I tried converting my logo to 1-bit image and it is time consuming to remake it... props to you for having the patience to make all those 😄. Im a big fan of MK and retro games, you did an awesome job!!
Wicked, now I think you need to go into settings and set screen saver to “custom” (from memory)…see if that works!

Pretty much there’s 6 BMP images you can swap out - 2 for the startup and 4 for the screensaver (which scrolls to the left). Would love for a way to have like cycle thru a handful of images to created a ani gif style thing for the screen saver.

Wait. When i export a project there are no files in the picture folder. Is that why i can't get my custom ones to work? Cause they're on there and they're invisible so i can never replace them? Haha

@@Nonjuror no it wasn't a firmware issue. I was on 1.13. Whenever i exported project 1 there were no files in the pictures folder. But when i exported project 5 it worked for some reason idk haha

Hmmm…I’ve never had that happen but if you scroll thru these comments there’s a small thread where it’s happened to a couple of people. It’s a weird thing. Only thing I know is that you need to have updated your firmware to do this.

@@taller513 From memory, I selected a different pad instead of using the same pad when importing/exporting the project. E.g. I exported the data from pad 3, then tried to load it on a different pad so it didn't work. Try pressing the same pad number for all steps relating to that and see if that works. I hope that helps!
I'm sorry but is not like in your video. I've done exactly and on the project after I copied on sd card is not showing anything what you have put in your video.
That sucks mate, I’ve never had that happen. I know that that happens sometimes to people but I’ve never created then exported a project that has turned out to have empty folders. I just did it now to test. Presumably you’re on the latest firmware update. If you figure it out, let is know how.
This straight up does NOT work on firmware 3.0
It should do, I was able to import a new project with new images last week. 1st thing I’d try is to import the project from a cold boot. Failing that, ensure image files are all 64x128 1-bit bitmap and names correctly - a common mistake is accidentally having the “.bmp” twice in the file name.
@@Nonjuror I actually bought your bitmaps from your beat stars page as wells as beefykit vol1, which I’m enjoying. 🤘🏻 Anyway, after following this video step by step, I noticed that my exported blank project has nothing in the “pictures folder.” I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. I did rename the bitmaps from your pack accordingly and put them in the pictures folder but there was nothing in the folder to replace. Can’t figure it out.
Ah word, thanks for that! That empty folder is hella common, I’ve never been told how it was resolved or had it happen to me, seem common with Mac users. I’m gonna email you a project to try to import - you should be able to see the stuff in the folders with this one.
Ya, no luck here, Mac user.
Feels like a common theme…I don’t know if maybe the image files have a “hidden” or “system” status and are hidden if you don’t have system files visible - I’m just guessing. That said, there’s a link in my pinned comment to download the empty project I use to import images, it has all the bmp files as expected.
@@Nonjuror I hear you. In the initial instructions folks have provided, the images from the SP are saved in the picture folder upon export. It seems those images are not saving in the export to even replace. Which means to me that an update has left the images in limbo, unable to be replaced.
Also, when importing the project with firmware 1.15, the SP reads "EXPORT folder". I think their latest debugging created a bug.
@@JayVeMontgomery yeah it's a odd one...hopefully they'll get it figured out on the next update, it's pretty common. For the time being, grab this Project: www.dropbox.com/s/9pr7b2g188vex9m/PROJECT_X.zip it's the blank one I replace the images in and import each time, should work for you too.
