made my syrup wednesday, now going to have to find more berries to make tincture. Thank you!
You're welcome. Ours are about done, but I did see a few along the road the other day. May have to take a walk about and see what I can find.
Do you have to strain off the berries by a certain time (8-12wks) or can the berries stay in the alcohol indefinitely (1yr) until you strain them later?
Good question. We have never left our berries in the tincture longer than six or eight weeks if time gets away from us. We strain them off and bottle up the liquid. The berries get fed to the chickens. I don't see why It would be an issue to leave them longer.
Good job hopefully to make Ginseng tincture from dried root Ginseng (Korean Ginseng) please advise and let us have your comments
I have never made ginseng tincture. I guess I need to go hunting for some.
Hi, I have fresh berries ready to make tincture. Can you tell me why you freeze first please?
I freeze the elderberries first, because I have so many coming in fresh in the fall, I cannot use them all. I store them, picked and clean in 5 gallon buckets in the freezer until I need them.
Is it ok to store the jar in fridge? Living in florida, there are really no "cool dark places" other than that😅
Yes, I jar in the fridge would be fine. When I lived in an apartment, I did mine in half gallon jars in the refrigerator.
Thank you😊😊
Did you use frozen elderberries? or did you defrost them and let them air dry or dry them in the oven?
I use fresh frozen elderberries, they are flash froze, so there isn't much of any ice. I do not dry them off, and this works well.
@@nuttygnomehomestead Hi, Can you explain why frozen is better than fresh berries? Thank you!
Do you get any layering of sediment or something on top of the berries? Also, what does it smell like after 6-8 weeks? Doing a tincture for the first time and purs kinda smells like vinegar.
There may be a little bit of sediment, but that is all strained out after 6 to 8 weeks. As for a smell, it kind of smells like vodka and elderberries. Elderberries have a unique aroma. They should not turn to vinegar in the vodka
Can I reuse the berries to make a second batch?
I have not tried. The berries are usually discolored after the process.
Meant to say mine. 😮
Mor were not that dark Still learning. Will it still be effective?
There are several varieties of elderberries, some are dark purple other are black when ripe. It's best to let them fully ripen before harvesting. They will still have some effect.
