  • The Chinese civil war, a three decade long conflict that still divides the Chinese people, is an essential aspect of the History of China. In this Chinese civil war documentary, I talk about the first united front between the communist party of china and the kuomintag, and the Ten Year Civil War that followed.

    I would love to see a sprawling tv-show with all the betrayals, intrigue and conflict of this civil war in it. I know so little about it, living in the west, but it is arguably the most significant conflict from the 20th century, aside from the world wars.

    • @History_of_China
      @History_of_China  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed ! The thing is, the vast majority of books focuses on the second part of the Civil War (1945 - 1949) and generally ignores the first part (1927 - 1937).
      There is the book "The Kuomintang and the Chinese Civil War : 1927 to 1949" (2017) by G. P. Douglas, but it doesn't go into precise detail and seems a bit biased. Still a good overview though.
      I also found this online thesis that is very complete : scholarship.shu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3416&context=dissertations
      For the second part of the war, I would recommend Odd Arne Westad's "Decisive Encounters : The Chinese Civil War, 1946 - 1950" (2003), which is also a good overview of the conflict.
      Hope this helps :)

    I recall reading in the book, "The Generalissimo", Chiang Kai-shek had no hand in the taking of Wuhan, which was taken by the more left wing factions of the National Revolutionary Army while Chiang and more right wing NRA soldiers went east, aiming for Shanghai and Nanjing.
    And it was Wang Jingwei and other left wing KMT members who had declared Wuhan for the capital, not Chiang, who was actually opposed to that decision as he declared the real capital to be Nanjing after taking it in 1927.

    • @History_of_China
      @History_of_China  Před 2 lety +3

      Not all communists were opposed to the left wing KMT and Northern Expedition. Those who were probably just didn't trust the KMT after Sun Yat-Sen's death, since Chiang Kai-Shek was clearly not a communist/left wing sympathiser, and were purged during the 1296 Canton Coup. Keep in mind that the communsits answered to the commintern, while the KMT was strongly independant
