Sharing CZcams videos about Norway and Scandinavia. Episodes about history, food, travel, language, sailing and more.
Damn, the level of content and story telling in this video is amazing. the way you take us trough the trip, step by step is on another level. So great to see the amount of details, footage and video skills presented in this video. There Is so much to learn from this. Thank you again for setting the bar just that lille bit higher every time.
I have never taken the time to explore Oslo in this matter, almost a little bit embarrassing not to know more about our country's captial. To be honest, you have inspired me to look much deeper into the history of the different places I'm visiting. I will share this video. This quality content deserved to reach far. Great job 👏🏻🇳🇴
Thank you thank you! There's been quite some work put into this one, so really appreciate your nice feedback! You are only a "short" train ride away so make sure to come check out the promenade some day. But wait until covid is over and things open up of course, I kind of wish I could have filmed a bit inside of the food market at Vippa and also the Opera + Akershus fortress... but will be next time.. post covid. Thanks again, hope all is well.
I can’t wait to take this walk. Thanks for the recommendation.
You are welcome! Enjoy the walk :)
Very informative, Paul. And, thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing pace with the “two” of you. Thank you!
Thanks Mike! "We" had a great time making this episode. Glad you enjoyed it
I lived in Oslo a few years ago. Such a great city. Thank you for bringing back the good memories :)
You welcome! Glad you enjoyed Oslo and thanks for watching my episode
I have walked parts of the Promenade many times, when visiting Oslo, but now have a new appreciation of the city after taking part in your excellent video tour. Would love to trace your steps and check out all 14 containers along the way soon. As a Norwegian who emigrated to California many years ago, I am very proud of the excellent job the city leaders have done in the harbor renewal project. I am sure millions of Norwegians and tourists will get a lot of pleasure from walking through and enjoying these open and beautiful harbor treasures. Thanks for an excellent tour.
Hei Eilif, thanks for your comment. And yes, you are perfectly right, millions of people will be able to enjoy this walk. And not just enjoy the surroundings, but actually being able to learn quite a lot by reading the text on the info points. I hope you'll make it back here soon so you can find all the 14 containers and see the recent developments. Ha det bra, Pål
Thank you for a very useful and interesting commentary on the walk along the Oslo harbour. It will definitely be part of my upcoming trip to Oslo.
That is great to hear! I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. Welcome to Oslo :)
Thanks, Cap'n Pål! Really enjoyed the promenade tour. Your videos, which have always been good, are getting even better. . . fun, clever, informative. Nicely done. REALLY makes us want to come back to Oslo, as well as the rest of Scandinavia. Hope you're well and you can get vaccinated soon.
aye aye, Damon, glad you liked it! Hope to see you back here some day. I'll probably get my first shot some time in June, and should be fully vaccinated by August some time... I hope. Luckily there are no restrictions on sailing and walking around :) take care
Pal, it was good to see you and Rick Steves on Zoom last night. Happy Constitution Day to you (and yours) and I hope you got some sleep. I hope that we can begin taking vacations again this year.
Hei Dave, thanks for watching the show! I got a good night of sleep and is back to normal again. Yea let's hope the vaccine does the trick and that we can come back to a more normal situation. Hope you are doing well!
Muy interesante , he estado en Oslo hace unos años y a cambiado muchos, gracias por el paseo muy divertido. Has muchos mas videos,🙂 me encanta esa ciudad.
Si, ha cambiado un monton! Muchas gracias por ver el episodo :) Feliz Ano Nuevo!
Great video Captain Pål. Oslo has sure changed since we were there in 2018. Will have to get back there sometime. So much to see, so little time to see the world!!
aye aye, thank you Doug! It sure has changed.. It's exciting with all the re-development going on, and that we can use these areas by the fjord in such different ways than just a few years ago.
Great video! The production value is amazing. I really want to see Oslo now. Thank you!
Thanks a lot Dorothy! Hope you can make it over here to experience all Oslo has to offer :)
This evening, I finally pinned my husband down to watch this video. We couldn't believe the changes since our visit in February 2019!
Yes it's quite amazing, and still so much left to develop along the fjord. It's fun to observe the change. I think you need to visit again ;)
@@norwaywithpal Det er planen hvis denne pandemien noen gang forsvinner!
@@twelvesmylimit ja det går nok mot lysere tider nå... får vi håpe :)
@@norwaywithpal Det håper jeg, også!
Such a great video! Thank you. It helped me remember my walk along the promenade. I can't wait to visit Oslo again!!! Cheers.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it, and that you had a chance to walk the promenade
Fantastic video Captain Pål! I was waking this paths so many times! Thank You for all the informations! 👍😁
Tusen takk Tommy! Glad to hear you liked it
Scandinavia in general but Norway in particular is on my bucket list... I dream of visiting your beautiful country one day:)
I hope you'll make it here some day!
Enjoyed my second viewing of your video as much as the first or more.
hehe, tusen takk John! I'm working on my next video now btw. It'll be a sailing trip on the fjord.
It was nice "strolling" with you on the Promenade! :-) I was particularly touched by the story of the untuned bell. I love that it was made into art instead of being left on the scrap heap just for being 'out of tune'. That's beautiful. Tusen takk, A.K. Dolven! (and the City of Oslo)💘🎶
Thanks for strolling with me Amy! My girlfriend actually worked as an assistant on the Untuned Bell project. And I made a video documenting the installation. Check it out: vimeo.com/464179763?embedded=true&source=video_title&owner=61686008
@@norwaywithpal Tusen takk for that video! It made me cry happy tears, especially when the artist hugged the bell 🔔😊 Even untuned bells deserve to be heard 🎶
@@vanme739 Bare hyggelig, it was an emotional moment for all us present that day
I loved this! I cannot wait to visit Oslo after this is All over.
Thanks! Hope you’ll make it over here as soon as the pandemic ends :)
Takk, Pål! We look forward to returning to Norway soon! (From Minneapolis, MN)
Vær så god :) Hope you'll make it over here soon. Velkommen!
Thank you Pål. You never fail to pique one's interest with your amazing and informative videos. Keep them coming.
Thanks a lot Rachel, glad you enjoyed the video!
This is a great walk it was very interesting to see 👍
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video Captain Pal. Tank you!!!!
aye aye, thanks a lot Billy!
Once again wonderful job! I can't wait to walk to all 14 containers one day. Such beautiful homes and parks for everybody to enjoy, very nice job Oslo! I wasn't too sure about that captain you had on as a guest...seems a bit fishy to me. 🤭⛵
Thank you Sarah, and you are right about the Captain, he is quite fishy..haha
Thank you for taking me to Oslo. I have never been able to get up North on my 2 trips to Norway. My Paternal Grandfather was from Oslo, and Paternal Grandmother from Tveit (spelling?) I ache to return there.
Hi Shari, glad you enjoyed it. Tveit is a place in the south, close to Kristiansand. I hope you will make it over here some dag! It's very beautiful up north, especially the Lofoten islands.
I accidentally stumbled upon your video while searching for Oslo videos.
I'll be moving to Oslo in a few months and this whole 10km walk felt so good to watch. Thank you for your effort making this video.
I'll probably send you an email if I don't find the last number 14 :)
Be well
Vi ses 🙂
Hei! Glad to hear you liked the video. Welcome to Oslo then, I hope living here will be a good experience for you :) and yea see if you can find that nr 14 hehe, Ha det bra
Such a fun walk along the waterfront of Oslo. Thank you for taking me along!
You welcome Karen, glad that you could come along on this walk
Great video, very informative and nicely done. Looking forward to visiting Oslo.
Thanks Filip! I hope you'll make it over here soon :)
Great video! Thanks a lot for all the wonderful information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was awesome! Thank you so much for doing this video! Can't wait to visit in August of 2022. The Harbor Promenade Walk is now on my list of things to do.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching :) I’d definitely recommend you walking the harbor promenade. It’s a great way to see the city. Also make a stop by the Akershus fortress. It’s not part of the promenade, but on the same road. Well worth a visit
@@norwaywithpal Will do! We are there on an overnight cruise stop... from 9 am one day until 5 pm the next day!!! So excited to get an extended stay there!
@@nancymickle488 Great! Nice that you have some time to explore, I hope you will enjoy my hometown :)
Great video! Oslo has really been transformed in the past 10-15 years! Videos and pictures don't do justice to how beautiful the new development around Bjørvika and Bispevika are. One of my favorite parts of Oslo 😊
Yes, the development has been pretty intense, and there are still new buildings and neighborhoods popping up by the promenade. Glad you enjoyed the video :D
I really like your videos!
Thanks alot!
Such a cool video Pål. The last time I was in Oslo was in 2010. You really made a good job of including a lot of pertinent information for folk who may wish to visit. I loved the historical aspect of this video. Well done dude.
Thank you! A lot has happened since 2010, and new buildings and areas are still popping up. Glad you enjoyed the info and historical aspect :)
This was a great tour!!!! I think our ferry came into #6 ? near the town hall. This would be a great promenade to walk if I ever get back over there. Oslo was my favorite city that we visited on that trip and you did show us many of these highlights either in person or as we passed by. Would have enjoyed more time to see the sites and eat the wonderful seafood. Thanks for another great adventure.
Hei Leona, our ferry came in just next to #8 at Vippetangen. Our hotel was just around the corner from the town hall. Thanks a lot for your nice comment, I hope some day you'll have the chance to walk the whole promenade!
Great video Captain! :)
Thank you mister!
Thanks so much for this video, Pal. You've done a super job of bringing your beautiful city into our homes, and enticing us to a return visit! All the upgraded changes along the waterfront are marvelous as are the new buildings, with great architecture.
Take care and stay well, and keep your terrific videos coming our way. Thank you.
Thanks for your nice comment Janet! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Next one will be a little sailing trip on the fjord :)
Great video
Thanks!
Stunning content! Jeg elsker det! :)
Tusen takk Dani!
Thank you for enabling us to keep our memories vivid through your excursions. Looking forward to seeing you on RSE's MTN Monday, May 17. Paul and Gail
You welcome Paul! Thanks for your comment. I'm looking very much forward to being on the MNT :D See you there
I don't think we saw all of this on our visit. We need to make another trip... Thank you for the video!!
Yes you do, would be great to meet you guys again!
Thanks for the quality video, I would love to take this wonderful stroll. Can you please recommend some convenient parking points near the starting point on the either direction
You are welcome! You should probably be able to find some free parking in Drammensveien, and then walk to the starting point from there,
Really fun! Oslo is really evolving into a beautiful city.
It really is! It's exciting with all these new areas opening up just next to the fjord
So informative, interesting, and enticing. Pal you do such a good video - keep it up. I always enjoy your work and commentary, Makes me want to visit Oslo and Norway again.
Thank you John, I put a lot of work into this one, so nice with some good feedback :)
10km walk is nothing for me. I walk 30km. Looking forward for a Norwegian walk 🤞🤞🤞😊
Hehe sounds good 👍
these videos are great. I see why Rick Steves uses your knowledge and expertise. Here's a strange question: where did you get that sweater? Please don't tell me your mama knitted it for you.
hehe thanks David! I got a few that my mama and grandmother knitted for me, but this one is from www.devold.com/nb-no/produkttype/ullgenser/nordsjo-sweater-crew-neck14/?color=270A
@@norwaywithpal Ha. Thanks. Out of my size but on the list for jul next year. Really great content. Ha det bra.
@@norwaywithpal UPDATE: Was in Olso a few weeks ago with my dad and one of my boys. Saw this EXACT sweater in the Maritime Museum over on Bygdøy. Bought it. Soooo, this is what the cool kids are wearing these days...
@@davidthompson7772 haha that is so cool! Btw I am currently out sailing now, and I'm wearing it all the time on chilly evenings. Def what the cool kids are wearing ;)
Hi, Pal, Very enjoyable! I, fortunately, have completed my covid-innoculation, and I feel greatly relaxed. A favor? I thought I had saved your Christmas message--with language instruction. but I cannot find it. Would you please re-send it? I have no big travels this summer--just visiting some nearby states. Karen
Hi Karen, glad you enjoyed the video, good to hear you are fully vaccinated. We are a few months behind you guys over there, but things will start to speed up soon. Can you open this link? czcams.com/video/L6quqyBRkZY/video.html
What happened to the former harbors and industries in that area? Have they been relocated to other places? Or have they disappeared completely?
Hei Hartmut, good question. Most of the industry was already gone, so it was basically container harbors. They were moved a bit further out along the fjord
Pål, where did the commercial facilities (container shipping) get relocated to?
Just a bit further south of the harbor area. And I have a feeling that process is not over
@@norwaywithpal If it’s anything like what tends to happen on our west coast, the facilities will be improved to accept larger ships with deeper drafts and maybe one or two bulk loading facilities.
Is that commercial section of the port also connected by rail?
@@stevenjohnson7086 Yes that might be, and yes it is connected by rail. I don't think Oslo will ever be an efficient container harbor, since the city is quite far from the sea, and container ships need to go up and down the rather narrow Oslo fjord.
@@norwaywithpal I see. There are similar issues here; Port of Oakland would benefit shipping pressures on Los Angeles/Long Beach, but Oakland is not ideal anymore due to landlocked issues and environmental concerns.
Based on your excellent video, it seems like the authority over the port of Oslo has decided to take a thoughtful and personal approach to re-purposing the area. That’s very admirable.
25 years ago, Port authorities over Los Angeles/Long Beach decided to demolish the US Navy shipyard and dry docks that were bequeathed them after the military cutbacks in the late 1990’s
There was a lot of controversy over trying to privatize the shipyards and provide good jobs, industry and local opportunities in an area that was surrounded by oil refineries, scrapyards and more un-touristy landscapes. Instead they gave (!) the real estate to Hanjin Shipping who made a giant intermodal facility staffed with very few good jobs and much automation.
Hanjin later went bankrupt, but we still import more crap to feed our voracious consumerism through there.
@@stevenjohnson7086 Interesting, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
We've been very fortunate with the development in Oslo. It's strange to look back today to the 90s when there actually had to be a decision made wether Oslo was to be commercial/industrial port, or a fjord city open to the public. Luckily they chose to latter, and today it seems such an obvious choice
How expensive is it to live in these new apartments. Do they buy or rent?
Most of them are bought. Prices vary a lot, but you would expect to pay from 850.000 USD and up to twice as much and maybe more :O
@@norwaywithpal Uffda!
@@twelvesmylimit hehe ja der sa du det.. syke priser
Nice video! Horrible new architecture tho, it doesn’t create any harmony at all.
Thanks Ronald! There are many opinions about the re-development, and there has been some heated debates here I can tell you.. (Still ongoing) :)
