Shogun has once again graced our TV screens and once again become a bit of a cultural phenomenon just as the 1980 mini-series did. Based on the wildly successful and highly praised James Clavell novel also named Shogun, this series introduces us to Yoshii Toranaga, a feudal Japanese lord, John Blackthorne, the English sailor lost in a new land, and Toda Mariko, the loyal servant who's caught between what she wants and what she's honor-bound to do.
Shogun is an incredible, character-driven story that uses masterful world-building to transport us to a 1600s Japan that feels familiar yet strangely alien in the best way possible. Shogun gets the GreatWatch label from us and we think it's worth your time, although odds are you've already seen it.

It deviates from the book enough I think they could make it a regular series if they wanted. Especially since Adams lived the rest of his life in the Japans, helping Tokugawa establish his shogunate and facilitate trade with the Protestant world and China. There's a lot of possibilities for drama in that, particularly with the Catholic/Protestant conflict, the rest of Asia being wary of the Japans because the Taikos Korean invasion, etc.
I'll admit, I was cold after the first episode and a half. I saw the original miniseries at least twenty years ago, and the difference between the two is astonishing. For example: in the original none of the Japanese conversations are subtitled. But once you get on its wavelength the show really is incredible. It knows you want to see huge fights, and it almost never delivers them. It wants you to understand the power in a woman holding a gun to a man's face to defend her perception of another man's wishes. It wants you to hear a line said in English and read how different the subtitle is, understanding just what is at stake.
Yup loved it! I don't know about another season without Mariko though. Although wouldn't mind more of this world.
I know Clavell wrote more books about Japan, but I don't know if they're directly tied to this plot. Maybe one of those will be adapted too, or some creative writers can continue without direct source material

It’s not the exact same as the GOT problem. The problem was after season 5 Dumbass #1 & Dumbass Number 2 quit including GRRM into the script, ignored his calls/texts/emails, and we saw the rest.
I don’t know why HBO didn’t let them walk and hire new writers unless the their contract said they get to finish it unless they freely give it up.
I loved the show, I couldn't wait for every new episode. I would watch 10 seasons of this even if the show becomes game-of-thrones-bad.
I loved every episode except the last episode grrr 😡🤬... Every episode builds and builds at the end of every one I was on the edge of my seat! I was so looking forward to the last episode.
Then I saw it.. it was such a letdown... It told and not shown, it rushed through just to end. With good show writers the last episode should have been 2 more not one. In my opinion I felt at the end episode it looked and felt like the show ran out of money.
My rating for every episode is 9/10... Except the last episode was a 6/10....
I loved the show, but I guess I’m in the minority and hated the ending for leaving so many Plots unfinished.
Remember, Sanada Hiroyuki emphasized this adaptation of _Shogun_ would be more culturally authentic from the Japanese perspective - and in that sense it ended superbly.
