Guessing white, chess boards tend to have white and black, but function the same as checkerboards. Other than that, it would be from people who don't play games too much.
Checkers isn't a commonly played game these days honestly, and when you think of checkerboard you think of a black/white pattern. Also white game pieces aren't even that rare especially in those multi-game sets. I'm actually surprised white doesn't have more.
