- how to play genesis `fly on a windshield` on a 12 string. i noticed that no one has really posted how to play this, but many have requested it. So, after giving it a listen and then watching The Musical Box live and Hackett playing it, I reckon these are the chord structures used. btw I posted this just a couple of minutes after re-´new´-learning it, so it´s a bit rough in places. but I hope it helps...

Very nice John. Sounds right to me. Many thanks. All we need now is that sudden entry of the whole band where just thinking about it makes the goosebumps appear all over. :-)
Brilliant! Always wanted to learn that one. Thanks for posting it.
Thanx John! Been a fan for a while. Keep it up! Ack
Outstanding. Thanks so much. Love playing PG-era Genesis on the guitar.
Thanks for sharing this one too, John. I also have eventually taken a peek on those TMB clips but they usually don't have many clear "Mike's" close-ups so this is very helpful. Those A strings are tricky to mute on a 12-string!
Thanks so much. Love that song!!
Thanks for posting! This was super helpful. Cheers mate from me and my G trib here in the USA, Selling Fairfax by the Pound! :)
Thanx for posting! Great job!
Thanks a lot. I seem to remember in one of your lessons you warmed up by playing the beginning to YES' Awaken. I saw this song performed at two separate YES concerts this past summer have been hoping you would do a lesson for it.
Nice one sounds good see why genesis was more creative in the early years with the chord shapes 👍
Brilliant and very helpful
Wow, that’s great, it’s times like this I wish I owned a 12 string
Nice one John!
Excellent lesson, thank you!
Thanks. I'm glad it was helpful - it had been annoying me for years, wondering how he played this. It was only when I needed to learn it for the band I was in that I finally cracked it. Thanks again.
Brilliant Lesson! (You should play a full song, guitar sounds great, you sound like you've got a good voice too)
its like Steve Hackett Live !!!! merci mon ami John !
just listen Genius of Steve Hackett genius Metamorpheus czcams.com/video/s3hreQr-DUM/video.html
Awesome! the online chord charts never do this one right and this way seems perfect! BTW, has anyone ever told you you look a lot like Bill Murray?
Brilliant.
Thank you. It's another little bit of Genesis mastery, It was so much fun to play this song live with my old band Seconds Out
Well now that i have this new 12 string and have been catching up on all the 12 string tunes I´ve wanted to learn, you may, just may get your wish. I have a lot of things to learn for upcoming gigs in the next months, but you´ve sparked my intrest to get all the 12 string parts for Awaken learned. I´m making an "And You And I" instruction video at the moment too.. watch this space...
Thanks
One of my fav genesis songs, thank you. How about in the cage?
valleysofneptune I only ever learned the bass to In The Cage. It was a real task singing and playing it live I can tell you!
caro amico ti sei invecchiato mi fa piacere vederti su yutube !!!
After this section (which has helped me greatly, thank you!) they move to the passage where the bass pedals kick in and the 12-string moves to a different set of chords and M. Rutherford is moving up and down the neck in what appears to be some form of barre chord. Can you help with this as well. All the best.
Yes, i haven´t checked but you´re probably right. I´ll check it out. This version is just how I hear it on the album; it´s a way to play it as an acoustic version, I just put it out there to help and inspire others to get the whole tune under their belt. Could you post a link to the video you´re referring to and I´ll check it out.
So, thanks, the feedback is always welcome, especially when it helps get these tunes out there with the correct versions.
John Morrell Thank you for posting dear John, i would make a request for a lesson about "Alone tonight" from Duke album, I know that Rutherford plays the accompaniment using a no standard tuning but I still haven't found a serious lesson on YT!
alberto fregoso
Hi, I worked out the basic chords of `alone tonight` for you, all the way through with a dropped high E to D tuning. I´m sure Rutherford has re-tuned other strings as well. If you want, I can post a video for you - a basic run through - a rough guide. Not really ´a serious lesson ´ ;-) Let me know if it would be of help to you.
John Morrell Yes indeed!!
alberto fregoso Hi, I´ve just uploaded a quick guide on how to play the song. Glad to be able to help. ;-) I´ll post a link when it´s up.
❤❤❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
👍
The chords are getting really weird from 3:30 They must have worked so hard to get those chords right. lol
What’s the metre?
I've no idea, I just approximate or play it by feel. I also try to copy what Rutherford is playing.
OK just try to play The Ciaconne of Bach like the Master Voyage of the Acolyte do , impossible and si you hnok what how many longue plage of prog
Hi jean-francois, I only learn Bach tunes that I like, for instance, Prelude in E 1006a. Hackett is a wonderful musician and a very nice guy as well. I hope you take the time to learn some of his tunes on guitar.
Definitely not an accurate chord transcription.
Steve Zambito Hi Steve, I appreciate your care about having folks play this song correctly, can you post the link to the correct transcript or would you be willing to post a video of you showing us the accurate chord transcription. Thank I appreciate you taking the time to do this for us in advance. John
Steve Zambito Steve?
