I do kind of love that you used a quote from Miss Bingley when she was pretending to love books just to impress Darcy😋
I have read every single one of her novels, and I love them. However, my favourite is Persuasion. I know most of Austen's readers prefer Pride and Prejudice, but I think none of her characters is as deep as Anne Elliot. Which heroine is your favourite?
Persuasion is by far the best novel ❤️

It's a tie between Fanny Price and Emma. Mansfield Park is a layered Dickensian marvel but Emma is stylistic masterpiece of irony and character development.

P&P is such a good place to start :)
I know Im too late but I would totally start with Pride and Prejudice . I have reread that book over and over and each time I get sucked in and begin to get dreamy over Dr Darcy ...each and every time.
The Jane Austen Book Club is also a good movie to watch. After that I ended up reading all the Jane Austen novels.
I don't normally watch a movie before reading the book, but in this case, I found that it helped somewhat. I watched the Colin Firth "Pride and Prejudice" and the Gwyneth Paltrow "Emma", then read the books. The style of writing is so different from modern novels, and I felt having some knowledge of the plot helped to get over that obstacle of reading.

I started with Northanger Abbey. And my fave adaptation is BBC mini series Emma.
Me too! And I also love the BBC Emma. The BBC just do the best adaptations - I also love their Pride and Prejudice. - Jean

Pan Macmillan I've read and loved pride and prejudice in my native language (Lithuanian) and I've heard that Mansfield park is great for English learners, so I'm hoping to enjoy this book!! 💗 and also of course I really want to read sense and sensibility after that!! 💛 tbh all of the books sounds so interesting!! 😍

I’m fairly new to Jane Austen but have quickly fallen in love with her books. I had made short attempts in the past after seeing movies inspired by her (Austenland, Jane Austen Bookclub) but I didn’t stick with them long enough to get involved in the characters (busy student). However, recently I began with Pride and Prejudice because I knew very little about it. The only movie influenced by it that I had seen was You’ve Got Mail and that’s incredibly loose. I loved it. It actually leapfrogged it’s way to the top of my book list. It moves at a fantastic pace, so I think it’s great for beginning Austen fans to get right in there. I appreciated the fact that it wasn’t just a story of a woman growing and finding the person she was meant to be with, but getting past her own prejudices, thinking for herself and above all, surviving her crazy mother. I laughed, I cried. I could not put it down. My second was Emma. Emma moves at a different pace. (Not slower, it read slower but it’s pretty “in your face”.There is a ton of room for character development which Jane Austen is gifted at. It’s funny but you really do want to grab Emma through most of it and scream “Just Stop!!!” But she grows on you. She’s complex, she’s human and she is not without fault but for me, I found (outside of the matchmaking-I learned that was bad business in high school) that she was the most relatable, if read with an open mind. My next is Northanger Abbey..

My first Jane Austen was Emma, purely because that's my name so it seemed a good place to start! I've since read Northanger Abbey and have Sense & Sensibility on my shelf to read soon!

I love also reading Brenda J Webb pride and prejudice variations, they’re very good what if that happened instead of or if they met through a different pathway. I’m also reading sequels letters from pemberley ( can’t remember name of author) but so far am enjoying them also xx
I borrowed the audiobook of Pride and Prejudice from the library on Overdrive and read along with it which made it less daunting for me as I haven't read many classics. I really enjoyed it and I might try Northanger Abbey next :)
Audiobooks is such a good technique, I think it always makes something you're less familiar with comfortable to read :). I hope you enjoy Northanger Abbey, it was my first. - Jean
My copy of P&P is a Collector's Library Edition from years ago before Macmillan acquired the collection. I've read that book maybe six times and dragged it everywhere with me. It's made to the same sturdy standards as the current collection and still has a tight binding.

Thanks for the video! I love Austen :D I don't quite have a favourite, but I know I don't quite care for Emma... P&P is a bit over hyped; I much prefer S&S and Mansfield Park. I read Lady Susan a few years ago and found that it was a fantastic underappreciated volume, written in episodic form with an unlikable protagonist (I guess she would just be the main antagonist then?). The adaptation with Kate Beckinsale is called Love and Friendship- the name was borrowed from another of Austen's short stories. Your volume with all the short stories is very appealing!
I believe I started with S&S, then Emma, then P&P. Love all three. P&P is the one I reread/rewatched the most. I read her other three novels after that but now, years later I hardly remember anything about them (I vaguely remember Fanny Price and nothing about other two heroines). Not sure if that speaks more about quality of my memory, or my interest of the plot/characters at the time.
There's also "Love and Friendship", I'm a bit surprised you did not mention that!

Such a great episode of Book Break! I've done a very slow re-read project over the last few years and have re-read Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice and just finished Persuasion again. I want to get to Sense and Sensibility and Emma this year too and I need to finally read Lady Susan so I can watch Love and Friendship (Weird and ironic that they named an adaptation of one of her novellas after a different novella lol). I love that adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, and Lost in Austen and Austenland as well 😀. Do you know if Book Depository sells those Pan MacMillan editions? I'd love to get the Lady Susan one but I live in the US so I'd love not to have to pay a fortune for shipping haha. Again, great video😀

I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice and am a few chapters into it. Surprisingly, I've never watched any adaptations of it.
Would you recommend just reading it as it is, or annotating as you go along?
How awesome! Aha plenty of time ;). I hope you enjoy Pride and Prejudice. That's probably a very unique experience for a modern reader, to go into it without knowing the whole plot. This might sound blasphemous but I like to write in my books aha. I do find though that writing things down helps me remember things so if you are looking to do that annotating is always good. - Jean

Hello, iv'e been watching a few CZcams videos about the Jane Austen books and many say that there great to read! :) I haven't seen any of the adaptations of the classic novels, but i was thinking of reading the books first! I'm in my early 20's and i was wondering if you could tell me what book to start off with first thanks! .... :)
I had never read any Jane Austen before, but one of my goals is to read all of her novels in publication order this year! I'm currently halfway through Mansfield Park. I really liked Sense & Sensibility, was unfortunately disappointed with Pride & Prejudice, and Mansfield Park might be my favorite of the three, although I haven't finished it, yet. I love the adaptations I've watched so far, though- the 1996 S&S film and 2005 P&P film. I DO plan on watching the BBC adaptations, but I have to get the discs from Netflix!
I think it can be hard for Pride and Prejudice to live up to all that hype. Glad you enjoyed Sense and Sensibility. I enjoyed Mansfield Park because it was the one whose story I was least familiar with when I read it. BBC just nail it on the head with Jane Austen adaptations. - Jean
Yeah, I mean with Pride & Prejudice I like that it followed the same sort structure of Sense & Sensibility. And I really liked the sort of twist- the whole time you think it's Mr. Darcy being prideful and Elizabeth being prejudiced, but it's the other way around! I liked the revelations of it, but the first two volumes (since her books are split up into three volumes) were kind of boring and I was confused on a few characters. Things really started happening in volume three and my feelings changed and I ended up liking it, but it was still disappointing that I was really engaged only during the last hundred and forty pages or so.
I'm very interested in seeing my ranking of the novels once I've read them all, especially which one will be my favorite of the six.
I will try Jane Austen again with Emma down the line when I head to the bookshop.

I think NA & Persuasion were first published together (i.e. in one volume).
My favourite to adaptation is the BBC p&p series - perfection ( sigh)
I think Pride and Prejudice is the easiest way to get into Austen and I would leave Mansfield Park to the end as I think it is a harder book to deal with
I studied Mansfield Park for GCSE and hated it 😬but I think that happens with lots of books that are studied at that level unfortunately- surprised I ever did read the rest of her work !

There is a book pride and promiscuity. It is about newly discovered notes by Jane Austen which would have made pride and prejudice a good deal sexier you might be surprised

Quite fancy "Mansfield Park" - anyone know of any modern versions?
There's a movie called Metropolitan which is supposed to be an adaptation of Mansfield Park. I can't vouch for its quality, though, as I've never seen it.
ETA: I don't know why I didn't immediately mention From Mansfield With Love, as it is actually my favorite adaptation of the book! It's a webseries here on CZcams which has Frankie Price (Fanny being too risque?) as a maid/housekeeper/friend of the owners at a hotel making video letters to her brother, who's in the military.
There's a young adult novel out called "Seeking Mansfield". I have yet to read it but I'm all for anything to do with Mansfield Park!
It's a shame that you give the plots away :( I wanted to watch to see where I should start with Austen but had to stop watching so I wouldn't hear the plots of the books before reading them. Your books are beautiful though and will continue to watch other videos.
