Trying Out The Survival Knife Sheath System Concept

  • I see a lot of people modifying their knife sheaths by adding other attachments like accessory pouches and ferro rod loops. Curious about the hype, I improvised my own knife sheath systems to also include other small essentials like a fire kit, compass, and signaling devices. So far, I find the idea surprisingly practical.

Thanks for the feedback. I kind of let this channel lapse after all the c0v!d BS since I lost my business as a result. Hopefully I can start the channel back up soon.

Im a big believer in having a pouch on your knife. Essential items are what you need to maintain that knife. A falkniven 3v sharpener, small block of honing compound, vaseline soaked cotton balls in plastic, small ferocerium rod, a stick of beeswax lip balm to maintain the blade. Thats all though. This fits on the esee small pouch. Im looking for that rd7 bush though.

I’ve been making kits around knives off and on since 1983 when I got out of the Corps.
You’ve got a couple of great setups there.
I actually have a knife (TOPS Outpost Command) with the Maxpedition Barnacle on it.
The TOPS emergency whistle might work for your Barnacle kit there (but by now you probably already found something).
Some of my kits will stay together until I’m in the field, and then the pouch comes off the sheath and onto my belt. Especially when the pouch is on the larger size.
The Maxpedition Cocoon Pouch is a great knife pouch. I have one attached to a tomahawk sheath that contains a 1/2”x6” ferro, a Silky Pocket Boy Saw, a Mora Eldris, and some jute twine.
Gonna subscribe to your channel and check out more of your videos.
    👍🏻👍🏻

So what you’ve really got is more of a land nav/ fire kit on the knives. When you removed the biggest match safe on the market I got a great chuckle. Still smiling. Here are some thoughts to include: Whirlpak 1L water bags, Aqua Tabs, 20-30 feet of 275 cord or bank line. Sail needle . Wire. And definitely a small knife option. A $30 SAK would be perfect. I did share your video on my twitter but honestly my experience with kit/knife combos is always the same: I can carry more and better gear cross-loaded in my pockets and not deal with the weight of a loaded 1911 rolling back n forth on my hip. Nonetheless, A for effort and for including REAL compasses. Realistically a survivor who can shoot a proper azimuth & walk uninjured for 3-4 days can walk out of almost anywhere in the continental US. Not Alaska. So add some cordage and a decent rip stop 8x tarp in your back pocket and you’d make it through.👍🏼Add half a dozen Cliff Bars and you’d make it through with a great story to tell

I would suggest adding on some items and removing some items.
    Add-on:
1.1 Water filter: clean water may not be available anytime and anywhere
2.3 energy bars: 3 , for one day need
    3.Medicinal ointment & Alcohol pads
4.2 big Light sticks or LED device: for 8 hours illumination
    5. a Mora knife for bush-craft and slice food: highly recommend Kansbol
    6. Few salts: 10 grams are enough for 1~2 days
    Remove:
Remove all fire-makers but a Ferro rod and buy a magnesium rod.

  • @behindthespotlight7983

1:55 in those are practically machetes! I’m all for big knives but that means there’s a SAK and/or Leatherman on my belt too. Gotta have the tiny guy too. 👍🏼

I thought of marketing pre-assembled kits, not including the knife. I can make the Kydex sheaths though, so anyone can send me their knife and get back a custom package.

Sorry for the late reply, I kind of let this channel lapse for a while. I do carry a whistle, generally on my neck with a small neck knife. The whistle I carry is a blaze orange Fox 40 Sonik Blast.

Sorry for the late reply, mate. I let this channel lapse for a while (long story, but I sustained an injury which kept me from doing rigorous outdoors stuff for a while), but hopefully I can start bringing this back. To answer your question, I was not in the Navy. The tattoo was a random "flash" tattoo done by an artist at a tattoo convention (artist pick) that they were doing for like $20 on the spot. It was just coincidence it was an anchor. I did, however, serve in the Marine Corps.

Sigh…no matter how good your video is. And no matter how good you present the items. You can’t present brand new equipment and tell people you have done things with it. It’s disingenuous. We know what used equipment looks like. Please just present it as a review of new equipment.

It's used. I've had it about three years now. And, I bought it used. If you look, you definitely can see where the powder coating has come off. The OKC finishes are actually quite robust (which is why the current supplier of the USMC OKC-3S bayonet is Ontario Knife Co.), and it took my RAT-7 about three years of HARD use to finally start losing visible chunks off the finish. I eventually just stripped it all off. My USMC bayonet STILL has all the black finish on it and I've put it through hell and back. I haven't made a video of that one because, quite frankly, it's not a great bushcraft or even survival knife. It's a great combat knife, but for anything else it's awkward.

  • @aaronzierke9920
    @aaronzierke9920 Před 2 lety

0k. You say survival. Ok. You have many ways to start a fire and a good knife to process wood and clean game. But i see no way to sharpen the knife. Like with your canteen you should carry canteen stuff. Kool aid purification tabs or a purification system. The knife is no different. To care for the edge. The knife is an important part of survival. Get lost with out your pack or canteen. You must have a good edge inorder to make a hole in a log to boil water or carving something to boil water in. That thin pocket. Put a sharpening stone in. The mirror can go elsewhere. If all you have is the knife and a little para cord .then a fishing wallet card is necessary in there as well. They normally come with a small toad spear. Then to top it off. A necklace arrow head. They come with the sheath for it. Im not talking a flint arrow head. Now between all that and the fire starting fat wood and matches oh and ferro rod. You can survive if with canteen and canteen cup. You can survive and eat well. All you need is a light tarp and you have all you need to camp out for as long as you have food or time.

Thanks for the reply. Good suggestions, and I actually DO carry most of everything you mention, but not in this particular knife system. That goes on a small possibles pouch which also fits on my belt. Different components which all work together, but as it's a separate component it's outside the scope of this video.

You're right, I do live in the city. But I am also a former Marine with plenty of field experience, am an active Scoutmaster, and have taught wilderness survival. I've tested my gear doing real outdoors stuff and not just "glamping." And yes, you're right. If I go out somewhere for an extended time, I let my neighbor know where I'll be (approximately) and when to expect me back, and to call authorities and/or activate SAR should I not be back within a specified window of time. Trek smarter, not harder. ;)
