Back in 64-65 as a nineteen year old, I did a motorcycle trip on a '64 305 Superhawk from Montreal to Florida and across to California over a five month period while working along the way. I very much enjoyed the video.

Oh, what a beauty, and what a beautiful place to ride it!
I remember in 1966, seeing the CB77 in the dealer showroom and thinking "l could never ride that bike...it's too big".
Also in the showroom were CB72s (160), S90s and some "roadster" models with pressed frames and lots of plastic.
Eventually, in December 1966 l bought an S90 as my first bike, followed 1 1/2 years later by a CB175, then a year later by a CB350 K1.
    How l wish l could own a CB77 now...or a Black Bomber...or a CB350 K1....
    If wishes were bikes.....

My gosh, this take me back. My granpa had a 305 scrambler, that my dad would borrow and take me on some very spirited rides on when I was 5 and 6 years old. Country roads, around town etc. This vid just hit that spot. Those little Hondas had a big bike rumble, and performance!!

I just completed one of these yesterday, as of this comment. It's for a customer and I never really spent any time in the saddle of one until this one. I absolutely fell in love. Next in the shop, a Black Bomber.

Brings back a lot of memories for me. This one of the first motorcycles I ever rode at the tender age of 12. This bike cemented my love for Honda motorcycles. From the same era I’ve ridden a 70’ CL175, a 70’ CB350 and an 70’ SL350. Plus a few other goodies, Like the Trail 70, the original 50cc mini trail and the XR75.

I had a '66 that i rode from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to San Bernardino, California; stopped over night in St. George, Utah. In those days, there were no speed limits on the highways of Nevada; got it up to and indicated 100, barely, before scaring myself back to 70. Was biggest thing Honda motorcycles made at the time.

A CB77 was my first motorcycle, when I went to the Honda motorcycle mechanics' school in LA in '68 I discovered that the 5 spd. from the CR77 would fit a CB77 I bought two of the last ones they had, added a Wisco 350 kit to one of then, a Honda Road racing seat, a cheranti front brake, and went road racing, really good times. I'm almost 80 now, and I'm hoping to find another CB77 to restore, and ride again.

Wonderful, sounds just exactly the same as the two that I had, never should have sold them! The first I had would run about 102, slightly
better valve springs than my second one, it only ran 99mph. Had an X6 in between the first and second, it was fun also.

    • @tobiasmutt6439
      @tobiasmutt6439 Před rokem

      That gap!
In 1977 My brother bought a 350 AJS, and it came with another bike that was completely stripped into two big boxes. It was a 77. I was just sixteen and he told me I could have it if I could rebuild it. I had grown up in a mechanics workshop (Dad was a mechanic) and so I quickly had that thing rebuilt and running. There were no baffles in the silencers and so it was loud! After my first run up the road I got back to Dads workshop and he said he could hear me the whole time I was out. Then he said - "Its legs are too long". I asked him what he meant, and he said "That gap between gears". Your comment stirred a very old memory 🙂
And yes, if you kept it wound open that thing took off like a rocket. Twice I burnt a hole in the left hand piston doing that.

That looks like a nice part of the world to ride around and what a great bike to do it on. Certainly brings back a few memories for me! Had a '66 one of these in England, in '68. Lovely bike to ride, every bit as fast as the average British 650 of the day, nice handling, decent brakes and technically advanced too... I changed the oil twice as frequently as the book said, or it would eat the piston rings; that was probably down to the poor quality British fuel contaminating the oil. If only they still made bikes like this today - small, light (159 kg/351 lbs), 100+mph, good range with a 14-litre tank. What's not to like?

Great refresh/restoration!! Bought a 1965 CB77 used first year in college. Loved it--could easily keep up with (beat) Triumph 650 of a friend. Both bikes eventually stolen from behind our fraternity house in Boston. Replaced mine with a ratty one; then converted to a cafe racer with fiberglass tank, fairing, and seat combo from England; rearsets, drop-bars, separate tach/speedo units, roller cams with heavy springs, carb bell-horns and reverse cone tipped megaphones. Was a real screamer but never got on the track since it was stolen too!! Boston was a mecca for stolen motorcycles in the 60's. I did get this one back, quite trashed--got rid of everything I could to make very light; then drag-raced at New England Dragway (was put in 500 class due to mods) and won 15/16 races (before 2 strokes took over)! Lost the 16th when I missed a shift off the line, hitting 12,000 rpm and throwing a valve. End of that one!

Very good engines, very smooth running . Cam chain needs changing at specified wear point for max reliability, I think . Revell made a very good model of it , at the time, in 1/8 scale

It was the first vehicle I ever bought as a Freshman in college in 1974. I paid $300. for it and it was in nice shape. I took the original big mufflers off and replaced them with some classic Triumph snubbies for a throaty sound. I really loved the balanced, sturdy feel of the 305 SuperHawk and I got the speedometer up to 105 with the wind to my back going downhill on a big open highway in Oklahoma one Sunday morning on the way to church. It was smooth with no wobble. The size was perfect for everyday use and it was very reliable.

Bought my first motorcycle as a teenager in '65. I lusted for the Superhawk 305 but couldn't see paying the very same amount for it as a Triumph Bonneville 650. The Superhawk was by far the better bike as history would prove. I still lust for one.

Bought one of these in 1963 after learning to ride on a BSA Bantam 175. Quite a revelation to feel the power and free-revving motor of the Honda, in fact I often went way over the 9000 rpm redline which it would do at the drop of a hat. Maybe that is why the motor was knackered after 7000 miles? But hey, you had to show the Nortons and Triumphs what the "new bike on the block" could do!

My buddies and I put a lot of miles on one of these, back in the Nixon Administration, trying to get the dash needles to point the same direction. One time we took a piston out of it in gravel-sized pieces... 😆Still ran a few miles home on the other. Yours sounds pretty darn good for having the baffles in the mufflers. Ours were gone before we got it.

The real deal the Speedo sweeps counter clockwise like mine did. You also missed a gear at least once. Again authentic I use to do it often but don’t remember if it was 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd or both. Regardless It never broke. Only the clutch started slipping after much full throttle shifting

A milestone motorcycle, actually more important to Honda than the 750. With just a little tuning it could produce 35 rwhp and whip on every 500cc bike on the road in its day AND still be more reliable. Just clean that oil slinger regularly!

Love that engine sound the silver fenders and covers! I have a '63 C100 and REALLY want a Dream 305 and just missed one with under 5000 miles for $2900! My main concern is parts for these and can you still source them? I just love the 1 kick start and that Honda build quality of a 60's bike can't be rivaled by anything new. For years I've researched and did my homework and finally now the Dream is up there with the Yamaha SR400. Thanks for posting this!

I had the 305 dream and a cb 250. The gear ratios were much too close together on the 250 so that first was too high to start the pair of us up a steep hill and fifth gear was revving its guts out at highway speed. Even with only four gears the spread of gear from 1st to 4th was greater than on the 250 making it a much more usable bike and easier to ride in traffic.
The 305 didn't have the handling of the newer 250 but in all other ways it was the superior bike.

When I was about 15 i had a super 90, from what I remember, it look exally the same but a 90, it would do about 80 miles a hour, unreal, my sister had the superhawk my brother had a I think it was called a 305 scramler, so when 82 came around I had to have that 750 nighthawk, still have it, then my wife had to have a bike, go figure, so I bought her a 79 400 hawk, standred, ever day coming home from work it would be setting at the end of the driveway we walowed some ditches on that thing, she learnt and got her license, didn't have to die doing it nether lol
