- Getting to the Bottom of Mel's Hole
On Mel Waters' property in the Manastash Ridge, west of Ellensburg, Washington, there is a hole in the ground that looks like a well -- but it's not a well.
Like the owners of the property before him, Mel used the hole as a trash dump. His neighbors used it too. Garbage, broken appliances, old tires, everything went in the hole.
After a while, Mel started to wonder: why doesn't it fill up? Then he started to notice other strange things about the hole. His dogs wouldn't go near it. It caused his radio picked up strange signals. And it didn't seem to have a bottom.
Mel's curiosity became an obsession.
Let's see if we can get to the bottom of Mel's hole.

I just watched the full episode on Spotify and it’s up there with the best (alongside the Hodleston messages).
Your comments at the end about how you approach these topics are spot on and exactly why I like your channel so much. You look at the facts with an open mind and come to logical conclusions. Excellent, excellent work
and we've come to expect anything less from these 2 great YT personalities ????
Wait he uploads these in podcast format? If so I need them for work lol
Agreed. Wish our media and politicians were as unbiased as AJ and just gave us the facts and let us decide for ourselves what we believe.
Exactly alastair 👍
@@randoir1863 Heckle Fish is great but who's the other guy?
I'm certain that I'm not the only one, but the first time you see this channel, you're kinda like "what the hell is the deal with the fish?" Now I love heckle fish. Got his voice stuck in my head during everyday life. Best channel ever. PLEASE keep up the great work. Don't change a thing.
Same same.

Thought the same thing lol.
Yup. Same thought
Scotland, when I lived there as a child, has a plethora of holes just like that one, and many bottomless lakes. Time warps and strange phenomenon are commpn stories there. Brigadoon is one.
Where in Scotland 🏴 I used to live there too?
Wow, this is strange. I'm from Brazil, specifically from the state of Goiás, in a small town called Anicuns. We also have a bottomless hole here. For a while, all the farmers were losing their cattle due to a disease, and many of them threw the dead cattle into this hole, yet it never filled up. I meant well over 200 dead cows.
Kinda gross!
Really bro
Uh huh, right, yep, we all have those, man.
They say there are many "bottomless" holes all over Earth. Guess this makes our planet holy. It's unfortunate that our existence is so fragile and, on top of that, some people are determined to make it unbearable. Someday one of these holes will turn inside out like a sock and crunch us out of existence. Or something along those lines.
But wait, did any of the cows reappear alive shortly after not answering to their name? Animals decompose so given enough time I am sure they would just turn to a couple inches of soil. BTW, Amazon has an original tv show called Outer Range about a mysterious hole you might enjoy too.
There's something really nice about stumbling upon a channel with around 2,500 subscribers and watching it grow to over half a million. Love your vids AJ.
Right? This channel deserves it, they are awesome.
Yep
ya its cool being there from like the early days and watching the much deserved growth. truly awesome
I thought his content alone was amazing and deserved a subscription from me. But after seeing the back and forth with the fish. I was in no doubt. Ha. Such a nice touch 👌🏾
The goldfish got me.
Mel’s Hole was always one of my favorite topics on Art Bell’s show. It was so strange and funny, delivered by humble Mel and the dry but always kind Art. Thank you for keeping this story alive.
Man oh man do I miss Art Bell. I was a route salesman for Frito Lay. My days started at 2 am. Art was with from desert and the Philippines every night.
Yes pause ⏸️ All the way 😂 😂
Check out the guy who thought he was a horse!!!
I cannot possibly convey how much I love the way you approach an issue. The storytelling, the debunking, the actual facts, always leave me questioning my reality. Keep up the amazing work.
That last sentence about other channels being dishonest and we deserve better is the reason I love this channel. You take us on the roller coaster then lay out all the evidence for us, no matter the result and I greatly respect that.
Controlled opposition
I thought that was rather hypocritical to be honest, Why Files quite often leaves out important facts to make a story more believable and sometimes skips any 'skeptical' section altogether. Like with his Giza Pyramid power plant video.
Just wanted to say that in the days of clickbait your integrity is much appreciated. Also since your hollow moon video I feel like you are really stepping things up a notch. Loving it. Thank you.
So the moon is nothing more than a huge round, inactive hollow rock. And Mel's Hole is an elaborate hoax for entertainment. Ok.
@@hackman669 well you are no fun... :P

I’m actually from Ellensburg Washington and Mel’s hole as we call it is a crazy story one that everyone loves talking about. It’s really cool to see my home to NAMED bc it’s such a small town that was supposed to be a place of huge importance until a fire started and burned down the entire town and ever sense then it’s always “Seattle Washington blah blah blah” really cool to see a story from Ellensburg be told
Is it real or a legend?
I want to hear more about what the locals say about the hole! Also, is it possible the Great Fire is somehow connected to that hole? Does anybody think that?
Like the government didn’t want people looking around if they covers it to blend in,somebody with a radio or a dog could walk around until something strange like the signal breaks up or the dog gos crazy. Why didn’t anyone ask his neighbors. They would know.

My ONLY complaint is that CZcams took WAY too long showing me A.J. and Hecklefish, but holy smokes am I thankful their channel got big enough to finally appear.
I find myself nearly addicted to learning in a really FUN way. Something that schools would only benefit from if they adapted and adopted the same concept.

This channel always presents me with interesting, off the wall things that I’ve never heard before. That’s an accomplishment in itself these days, but to do it in a well produced, entertaining way is just fantastic
The dog was like, "Dude, you threw me down the hole. You and I are so done, i can't even express it". So "Pet Cemetery" 😮
I once lived among those Basques mentioned in the video. Back in the 1950s, my father was an anthropologist in the area, and he was welcome among tribes, outlaws, and the Basques. That “seal” was mistranslated way back when, and the story stuck. The Basques, even before Mel Waters, described sightings of a type of cryptid that came out of wells as more of an orb with roundish eyes. While I never saw it myself, the legend apparently remained when Mel Waters came around and popularized it.
Thanks for the comment
WTF?
From a grain of truth a story can be made. I would like to hear more of the original grain. But that would be up to the locals I Guess. Thanks for the info.
Sure
Right. Right
"I went to Mel's hole and all I got was this magic seal fetus" is quite literally the best statement ever made.
That would be one of the best conversation starter t-shirts ever, honestly 😂
That was awesome!

I found this channel not long ango and now i am binge watching all episodes from new to old. And there it finally is....Mel's hole.....awesome!
Art Bell past away years ago, he broadcasted from his house in Pahrump Nevada. he called it the Kingdom of Nye because he was in Nye county. most of his broadcasts were in the late evening or early morning.
I was a huge art bell fan because I used to work nights to get through school. I was listening live to that least the first three Mel Waters episodes. It was absolutely intriguing and I knew that I did not care if it was true because it was such a fun story to follow in real time. I was working at a kids psychiatric hospital at the time and worked with some other weird Night Shift people. I turned one guy onto the story and he became obsessed. He spent the next two years going back-and-forth to Ellensburg to try to find Mel’s hole. Even though he never found it, he had a ball trying to. I thought about the stories so often and told the story so often that people ask me to tell it. I never heard the last chapter with the weird magic seal, and I’m glad I didn’t. Because it would’ve ruined the little bit of hope that I had that it was real.
RIP art 😎 gone but never forgotten
Wow. I remember listening to some of Mel's appearances on the Art Bell show.... like 30 years ago.
I never knew that all of that misfortune afflicted Mel after the government got to his hole. Once the government decides they want your hole, they take it. Lord only knows what kind of stuff they do to your hole.
Haha truth
But no one here seems to indignantly reject the Government's outrageous behaviour ! I don't live in the States so I don't understand why American citizens accept such violations of the private property and don't take the case up to the Supreme Court of Justice if necessary....! How can people be so sheep-like and accept being stolen of everything they have without fighting back ? This makes my blood boil out of sheer fury.
@@pedrolistacarey4880 it's called social engineering. Through decades of programing through the TV and media, we have now come to this. It is disturbing. Most Americans are so brainwashed they actually believe things like politics are real and not completely staged malarkey, like pro rasslin. Most folks are little more than mindless zombie's.
I find your comment to be quite humorous even though it holds truth
they wanted his fluids in addition to his hole. So his hole and fluids were wanted by the government.
Thank you for your honesty AJ.

Makes you really think and wonder. I love the strange and unusual in the world. It's fun to speculate and wonder. Thank you for your show.
No don't ever stop what you're doing. You're one of the only ones that tells the spooky/creepy/weird/mysterious story and then follows it by FACTS where ever the facts bring us. I really appreciate that part. If you debunk it you debunk it 🤷♀️ if it's still a mystery it's still a mystery. I love the research, honest and facts!

I actually had the radio phenomena happen to me once. I was at a goodwill messing with an old record player/radio. I managed to turn it on and get it running, and the radio was picking up OLD music from the 23s, 30s, etc. I ran outside to my truck and turned on the radio to the frequency it was on, and it was just a normal station playing today's hits. Super weird
Thats super spooky
Freaked me and my coworker out lol

Very interesting to say the least.
I was born with a special gift.
Realized from the age of 2.
I've read about this and it has something to do with old radiowaves being trapped in the ionosphere and we can sometimes randomly tune into old broadcasts or military communications
Why didn't you buy the radio lol
I finally listened to the Art Bell episodes. What a ride. It reminds me of old British comedy skits where they escalate the story to absurd levels slowly over time until it is total preposterous , however due to the way they slowly draw you in at any one moment it doesn’t seem ridiculous. The seal fetus was the point where I felt like he stepped up the absurdity of the story to comedic levels.
Thanks to the why files I’m going back and listening to art bells old shows. There are some great ones I’ve never heard of.
Merry Christmas to the whyfiles. What a great year you had in 2023 and I enjoyed all of it.
A lot of CZcamsrs just regurgitate Coast 2 Coast stories but I appreciate how he repackages them in a really good and entertaining way. Really have grown to like this channel!

Good ol Mel and Madman Markham.
I was surprised how easily I called in and was on Coast to Coast. There was a Scottish person talking about something going back several thousand years. Something about his name. I was able to tell him the origin and he attested to my information. Knowing the origin of things is quite satisfying. The draw back is that few show interest in knowing things that could change the world to goodness with such simplicity forever.

I miss Art Bell!!!! What a legend. Discovered him in grad school when I was going through a difficult time and Coast to Coast made me feel so much better.
RIP art bell gone but never forgotten 😎 we miss him.
Great episode. I grew up in Oregon and have never heard about this hole. Some other suspicious points I noted: 1) roll after roll of fishing line eventually weighs more than the line can support; 2) no one ever thought to lower a camera into either hole; 3) no one ever filed a FOIA request on it; 4) in neither case did anyone think to bring in university researchers such as geologist; 5) why they didnt save the sheep carcass or the tomur; 6) locals in WA would have remembered the military presence. Still a very good story.
Yes, nylon has weight and stretches. This has been a problem with dropping instruments deep in the ocean even while the nylon is almost weightless in water. 10,000 feet of fishing line would have broken. If he had used steel cable powered by a powerful winch i might believe him.
The fishing line didn't break because it gathered on the floor of the hole, since ol' Mel didn't realize there'd be no way to tell when it hit bottom.
@@emark8928 If it hits bottom and the line is still tight at the top, then the hole is still pretty damn deep. They did say he tied a weight on the end. Also not hearing rocks hit bottom. But that's all assuming he's telling the truth in the first place. Even a man-made deep hole that big in diameter is major undertaking. This is way bigger than holes drilled for water or oil.
And why has nobody searched for the Basque hole? Im assuming that they are a small community in Nevada, but that would make them easier to find considering there were local Native Americans who knew their locations.
@@emark8928 the spool would stop spinning out slack when the weight hit bottom.

To say our minds were blown that night would be an understatement, especially since Art went off-line shortly after that call.

@@incogneeto9122really?
Sounds like it was a lot of fun. The 90s were awesome
@@incogneeto9122 Oh, I know, but I didn't know that in the 90s. I was a teenager.
@@rowmagnvs It was a crazy time to be alive. The internet was still in its infancy. Urban legends and conspiracy theories were everywhere. The music was amazing.
In 1970, summer, visiting Jim Watson in San Leon TX. He told me one afternoon about when he and 5 friends were taken to Mel’s hole. I get crazy goosebumps at the thought of his story that afternoon. This took place in 1966 and unfortunately took place while these space and time travelers were on Owsley white. The last of the real LSD-25 in America. Unless you have some Swiss pharmaceutical stash. There was a trap door in his yard. A short fella, old looking but nimble like a elf. What ever that meant. Took them to the hole, but called it a different name. He was very detailed. Left shortly after that on a sailboat he built by hand with out power tools and never returned. Was never found. I can’t go on cause I’m already going to be labeled an idget or a nincompoop. No one believes it anyway.
I believe this strangely... the more I read the more I find that we r not the only ones on this plane we call a planet. Dwarfs, elfs, 🧚♀️ fairy, giants, aquatic, reptilian..it's all possible honestly...
I appreciate your balanced style in presenting the facts.I believe in keeping an open mind no matter how the situation looks to the naked eye.
This episode was the reason I spent three days watching every single one!
The TV series “Outer Range” is based on this hole & makes the series more real. Indeed our world has so much mysterious things that we just take for granted & it is important for us to learn more about it to empower us into the future. Your presentation is way better than others. Thanks for what you do.
I was looking for a comment that mentioned Outer Range! I kept thinking about that show while listening to this video but didn’t know that it was actually based on this case. I’d never heard of Mel’s Hole before.
It's a really good show so far. Can't wait for season 2.
Great show
I was wondering if it was inspired by this
I started watching that creepy show
I didn't put it together before this video but you sir are the Art Bell of our time! Its a heavy task but you have pulled me in from the first video I had seen from you. Its masterful story telling!
This channel is amazing. It actually inspired me to start working hard on my own channel. Thank you for these videos, AJ. We appreciate you and also hecklefish ofcourse :)
Another great vid 🔥 great job, keep em coming
PLEASE keep doing more Art Bell related content! I'm a avid listener and have over 1300 episodes archived. There are a great number of awesome things he covered that would make awesome videos.
Where can I listen to coast to coast?
Art Bell would celebrate the obituaries of people who died from AIDS, on air...
He's a world class scumbag.... Please don't request him....
@@DrAtomics Well here on YOu tube of course lol But it still broadcast on hundreds of stations that you can stream on the internet. Art is no longer with us but George Noory does a great job.

Great idea
Im a Geologist and Mine Owner in AZ. I honestly wouldnt doubt this story is true. Over the last 22yrs ive seen some pretty wild things in the earth. About 15yrs ago we found a hole in the coal region of PA ( a mile outside of the town of Mahanoy City, PA that was incredibly deep, how deep idk we had 700ft of rope with us and didnt hit bottom. Keep in mind this hole was already several hundred feet underground. Miners hit the openng while digging coal undeground
Thanks for bringing this expertise.
Do you have any ideas why dogs would be afraid of it? Gas or mineral smells, etc?
Interesting!
I stumbled on to this channel and it’s truly life changing. It has to be one of the best out there.
I’m jealous you’re getting to watch the videos for the first time. Best CZcams channel
Love you, love your show…
Compelling every single time👏
Your method of presentation is one of, if not the, best. You present the theory without cynicism (with a good bit of comic relief from Hecklefish, who helps to ease the already-typing commenters!), and also present the critique and skepticism with an open mind, presenting criticism without losing the magic. It's just a wonderful experience to listen in, thanks!!
I love how A.J tells a story and he stays unbiased in his presentation of the myth and then the facts... he is such a great story teller that I'm hooked anytime he starts talking lol also the content that he covers is right up my alley I love all this kind of x-files type stuff
Very kind, Jordan.
That's what hecklefish is for
Agreed he’s one of the best at it
I like how he reminds me of Dave Coulier's smarter younger brother.

I have to admit that I really wish you were a teacher and I was one of your students as a kid . The way you explain things and the interactions with heckle fish makes it easy to learn from you and retain the information. I really enjoy your videos. This is my favorite channel on youtube. I mean the story telling is so compelling but more importantly ending with a "here are the facts" section is just wonderful. Thank you so much for these videos, I am beyond hooked!
I use to have my doubts about hecklefish but now I love that guys comments or remarks on the subjects 😂
When trying to find anything on this and seeing the why files . MOST TRUSTED…….. thank you:)
The reason I keep coming back to this channel is because no matter how wild the story gets, you always come back with the other side of it. I appreciate that a lot. Growing a channel is so hard and can seem like a never ending hole too, we appreciate you!
This was excellent! There's another urban legend circulating the internet about dicyanin dye that, when applied between two panes of glass, allows you to see supernatural things in another color spectrum. It would be killer to get an episode on that someday.
YES, we need a video on this. It’s banned by the government for absolutely no logical reason.
@@HCGeducate me on this substance brother
Pardon lol this is interesting lol
@@joeyshields4987 Just before the Vietnam war a scientist isolated a specific dye that allowed people to see in the dark when it was applied to glass goggles by filtering out nearly all visible light and letting you seeing the aura of living things. The Mel’s Hole story was one of my favorite Art Bell broadcasts. Along with the famous Sounds from Hell broadcast. I’ll never forget I was working in NASCAR for Simpson Race Products and I was driving a pickup truck and 28 foot trailer at the time. We were leaving from a race at Phoenix International Raceway and I was driving on that stretch of I-40 between Albuquerque and Amarillo where there is nothing for miles and it’s pitch black. It was around 2am and Art played the sounds of hell. As scary as that is to hear, multiply that by a thousand times when you’re hearing it in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere 😳 lol
I remember that, was the Russians who drilled too deep and put a microphone down the hole.spooky
Some conspiracy theory's say that secret societies keep abducted people in cages underground D.U.M.B.S for experiments all over the world and that is who was caught on microphone making the strange horrifying noises.😱☠️
@@classifiedtopsecret4664 perfect 🤣🤣🤣
I've driven that lonely stretch many times in tour buses. All you see is what your headlights show you. It's like being in a tunnel to nowhere. Spooky. Add this story, and spooky turns into creepy. 😎
Hahahaha!!! So true! I’ve driven that stretch…
Hey! I'm Basque! My grandfather immigrated in the 50s. Sorry, we just aren't mentioned that often...
This was a wild story! I freaking love every time Hecklefish has anything to say. I'm going to need to do a lot of reading around it. Btw, congratulations on crossing that 500k barrier! Your channel is growing so quickly and you couldn't deserve it more!
Thanks, Michelle! I didn't know you were Basque! Did you granps play Jai Alai??? We used to go up to CT and watch the matches. (And bet on them)
@@TheWhyFiles Woah, that brought back a memory of all those Jai Alai ads.
Basques are an unusual people. Their language and genetics are odd. They have a high percentage of RH negative blood types, the rarest in the World. I happen to have that blood type, but no Basque DNA. The Berbers are also similar.

I remember Mel's Hole was discussed on Art Bell's radio show 20 years ago.
Love your work man. You are probably the best channel I have seen overall. The consistency of your quality and structure of your shows are phenomenal.
Wild episode! This is one of my favorites
The most ridiculous part of that story is that he was being paid 3 mil a year just to hang out in Australia and yet he still chose to fuck it up. That is less plausible than any of the fantastical elements shown on this channel.
"Fantastical elements" are what this show aims to debunk if found to be implausible. At the very least they are cast as doubtful.
AJ doesn't claim that the story was true; he only reports what Mel claims.
See, that's why I love these videos. He doesn't feel the need to leave out facts cuz it makes for a more intriguing story. I really enjoy his attitude and the format where he tells us the whole wild story and then brings it back to the facts in the last half. Excellent content 👍
My goodness, you're content is better than television! Little bit of x-files, twilight zone, amazing stories, and the outer limits all rolled into one. Even the post show ending (you dancing) is excellent! We're super impressed!!!
Yes sir.
Sounds like a kick ass metal song!
You Sir, are a master. Such incredible quality and captivating content.
This makes me think of the show The Outer Range! It’s about a rancher fighting for his land and family discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness.
😮❤
I totally agree to your principle of balancing a story with questions seeking logical sense. I loath channels that over hype and exaggerate dramatic affect that will impress that willful ignorance of many people. Also, having your fish do color commentary takes the edge off in his playing the critical deep end suspicions . I like the entertainment and Hmmm value presented.
So there are more of them. I remember reading about a similar bottomless hole, which I think was in the South of France. I don't remember the specifics, but some time during the medieval period, a local lord or official of some kind heard of this stone-lined hole in the Earth that just goes down as far as the eye can see, into total blackness. They too experimented with tossing things into the hole, and eventually decided to lower a person into it to see what they could report. With no volunteers, they made the offer to some prisoners that if one of them volunteered and was able to give an enlightening report, he would be set free.
They got a volunteer, and set up a pulley over the hole to lower him down with a torch. They hadn't lowered him down far, certainly not far enough that he and his light should have disappeared, but the light vanished suddenly, and the sounds of terrified screams came up the hole. They quickly brought the man back up, fearing an animal attack or something, but when he came back into view, he was dead, his body desiccated and his hair had turned completely white.
With no more volunteers willing to step up after that, they did the only logical thing they could think of: paved over it and built a church on top of the site.
Edit: After some research, I think the location is actually Houska Castle, in Czechia, and the building built over it was a fortress, not just a church. But the fortress was designed with its defenses pointed inward.
I remember hearing of one in Russia as well
@@chitowndubable Oh? One that isn't that ultra-deep bore hole they made?
