- Now in Oregon, I keep riding southbound from Astoria to Newport. This takes several days bouncing form one coastal community to the next enjoying every mile. Oregon proves challenging with spectacular climbs that end up gifting gorgeous views of the Pacific Coast. Along the way I meet more friendly people who take me in and make friends with.

You never fail to provide great content! I know the channel hasn't been growing as expected and you have other priorities, but don't give up. It's frustrating to me to see channels with tens of thousands of followers when all they do is the same lame "reviews", while you and other great creators struggle to battle the algorithm. But you have faithful followers and we believe in you.

It would be great to grow and be able to spread my wings with more funding but maybe it's just a matter of time like you say. Yeah those two states are so beautiful and so is California. That state sure surprised me with its diverse beauty as it did the year before last when crossing its southern end. All very cool and Im thankful to have seen it.

A Lady friend and I, biked this route, back in the fall of 83, We had started our trip in Duluth MN with a train ride from Thunder bay Ontario to Banff. We came out to the coast just south of Grays Harbor and ended up south of LA in Huntington Beach. What I remember about riding down 101 was that the blackberry bushes grew out on to the shoulder, right up to the fog line. If you were climbing a hill with a log truck, working its way up in the right lane, you had pull over and take a chance and cross your fingers not to find a Black berry cane. We fixed a lot of flat tires until we got to CA. Looks a lot nicer in parts than when I rode it back then. So much of a delight to meet people along the way and at hiker-biker sites. Back on our ride, we would collect bottles and cans, turn them in at a store where we would have lunch on what we could buy with the deposits. We fed a lot of stray cats, in campgrounds, watered down Krusteaze pancake mix. I'm glad I found your channel. Looks like a lot of hours of great fun.
Hi Mickey. What an awesome share here, man. Your story rocks! I'm imagining the blackberry bushes untrimmed covering the shoulder and you guys going on the lane avoiding them. I hope you at least got to eat plenty of them, I did. Miss them. Great too hear that hike/bike camping was around then as well. The whole route is so friendly for camping and to cyclists who don't always know where their day will end up. I also saw lots of folks collecting bottles and cans which I think it's a great idea to not only offer income to those who can use it but also to keep them off the roads. That belt breaking was not a good feeling. Especially knowing I didn't have a spare. The bright red vest worked out. I remember I was in California going thru Big Sur on a dark road that had lots of shade from trees wearing my dark green windbreaker and a driver slowed down to tell me I wasn't that visible. So I put on the red vest and immediately felt way more safe. It does make a difference. I need to work on my rear light too. Always something 🙄
Yeah the new bike is going to be a fun project and hopefully a dream to ride. I'm currently working on figuring out a wheel set for it. It will likely be carbon rims but not sure I can afford it yet.

Hey Diego! Nice vest!! I'm glad you took my advice and got it, even tho you might have purchased without me saying anything about wearing brighter clothing. Hopefully you wear it often in all kinds of weather. Great video with beautiful drone shots. Sometimes I wonder what the temperature is when you say "beautiful cool day, perfect for riding". I try to guess by what people in the towns are wearing. I prefer 70's and short sleeve weather, but on a tour, one has to adjust as much as possible to any kinds of weather. Take care and enjoy life.

That's great input about temperatures. I have thought about that and often have had the thought of getting some type of temp gauge that I can see all the time so I can share. Will get working on this, thank you, again 🙄. By the way, my favorite temperature to ride in is between 40 and 60F and yes it's always a struggle to maintain temperature and moisture under wraps.

Wondering what exactly the bike mechanic did to the belt to cause it to fail? The Co-Motion drop outs are pretty easy to work with for wheel removal. And I-9 freehubs are simple to remove and grease up the drive ring to quiet things down. Hate to think some inexperienced bike wrencher messed up your stuff when your miles from home. I guess that's why I prefer to work on my bikes myself. I've got an Americano and its a tank, but love it. I believe the Divide is even more tank-like and not ideal for on road travels. Awesome videos Sir!
hi Graham. i checked out your channel and watched a couple of your episodes, very cool.
the mechanic didn't know how to open up the hub to grease it and instead of punching out the cap he tried turning the hub by using the belt like a rubber oil filter wrench. you are right about working on your bike yourself. I build my bikes from the frame up and do so myself but not knowing much about the I-9 hub I figured to have a trained mechanic mess with it plus I didn't have the tool. thinking back at it I could have figured it out myself but oh well. yeah the Divide and I didn't get along even though it does fit me well. I learned that I am not a Pinion guy. either way, I swapped back to my 22 year old Cannondale to ride the second half of the tour down California's coast which was a great idea.

Hi j w. My buddy next door has a Kona Sutra and its a rad bike. I've also met several touring folks on the road riding on Kona's and they love them. The hype over Pinion and Gates drivetrain has serious validity but for specific scenarios, especially when on long dirt road tours were the rider is looking for little to no maintenance. Hi Darren. Yes, me too. The internal gearing makes sense but for certain applications like for long tours on mostly dirt roads. There is a certain feel of a chain on a sprocket that makes a lot more sense to me.
Some riders like that swarm-of-bees rear hub noise. Not me. If a new set of wheels has that sound, I immediately pull off the hub shell and apply grease to the ratchet area. Peace and quiet.
Good to hear Im not the only one. It really is unnecessary but I see why it can attract buyers because its seemingly cool sounding at first glance.

I agree with what you say about making eye contact with drivers pulling out and onto the highway. My viewpoint is: I’m riding my bike, taking a tour for fun, why would I be in a hurry?!? If I hurry, I could have a collision. 😩
Hi John. Yeah, the whole idea of going fast is kind of irrelevant when touring. If I ever get in a hurry is because I underestimated the climbing or weather for that day and want to reach a destination before getting caught cycling in the dark. But that's a rare occasion. The rest of the time I make sure get going early enough to get somewhere and have shorter distance options if there are any. Let's keep at it

Great video to watch on a cold Sunday morning with coffee. Can't wait to get back on the road. My only suggestion is that you PLEASE get a bright blinking red light for the rear of your bike. I am sure you can find a spot. You do THE most busy road riding in have ever seen! Dude, you need a rear light in that fog and traffic. Just trying to keep you safe so I can watch more of your videos :-) Thanks for the great vid!

Hi Andrew. Awesome comment, safety is number one and I do know I slack at it at times. Love to be told and reminded so thank you, man. I do have a lights front and back and I do keep them on all day powered by my dynamo front hub. The reason why my rear one isn't so noticeable is because my sleeping mat is sort of over it but in the dark it does show. I need to figure out a solution for that issue. On another but similar note, Peter White, who has a crazy awesome website for bike touring, told me once that research shows that blinking rear lights on bicycles will actually "attract" the sight of drivers in a dangerous way and be less effective than solid red lights. I try picture this when I drive and watch cyclists with both and I do think it is better to have a solid red than a blinking one. Thanks for watching and for this comment

hi Verlin. I did find a second belt that came from Europe to my home in Florida several weeks later. by then i was riding my Cannondale as you will see several episodes ahead from this last one. the interviews with John and Xanthia were really fun. they were both so cool to meet and ride with. John is working as a substitute teacher and delivering for Amazon until May when he goes back to adventure mode. I heard some from Xanthia but not much. I'm guessing she must be back in Australia and in school. in the future I am thinking on building on this interviews on the road and try share with you guys the interesting people that I meet along the way and why the choose to be out there. thank you for watching

As a distance cyclist myself I have battled with ways to cope with the never ending traffic parades and constant noise. Some days are better than others. How peaceful everything would be without them.
It sure would be nice not to be in so much traffic like on this episode but I find myself missing traffic if I spend too much time on some isolated trail. There is a comfort for me being in places that have the commotion of people including the traffic. Just not too much. Check out the I-40 episode, a seriously rattling ride in AZ. I’m a fisherman as well here in Cali. Mainly fish the aqueduct which runs from Sacramento delta to Los Angeles but also fish the ocean as well. Fishing is life!
Fishing sure has been life for me. Very cool you feel that way as well. I've guided in Alaska before but haven't fished any where else on the west coast. I do know some folks from California and they speak highly of your fishing. Catch'em up!

Hey Diego! Glad to hear you stayed overnight in Newport. It's been a while, but I have visited that town 3 times, As long as you don't mind the incessant barking of the sea lions, it's a great place. There's a place that serves the biggest pancake you ever saw. And if that isn't enough to fill up a hungry bicyclist, there is always the nearby Rogue Ale brewery & taproom.

Glad you got the hub buzz taken care of. All you read on belt drive bikes is that they "last forever and never need maintenance" Ive now watched two belt snaps, you and Duzer. Awesome drone footage as usual. When you started out on that foggy morning, i didnt see a "red blinkie light" on the back of your bike. Am i blind? At least you had that new red vest on. Good stuff my friend.
That hub buzzing sure got annoying after a week. That grease did the job. At first it was totally silenced but soon after it came back but lightly so all good. About the belt break, I think Duzer broke his because of too much tension and mine was mishandling. The moral of the stories is that if you get a carbon belt it is important to study how to handle and adjust its tension. I did all this but made a mistake to let someone who I wasn't sure knew get their hands on it. Either way these are not issues one would have with a chain.
I do have a solid red light always on but it is partially hidden by my sleeping mat which is strapped just above it on the rack. I need to correct this and make it more noticeable. By the way, I've been told by Peter White (www.peterwhitecycles.com) that it is safer to ride with a solid red then a blinking one. His point was that drivers can fixate on the blinking red and actually drive towards it by being distracted. Especially when tired. Not sure about this but I do think there might be something to that.

Hi Stefano. Those signs are all over and most times they tell you you are about to drop and then again start a climb unknowing of what grade or length is coming. California has crazy ones.
Wow, that's a bummer. Gates has been the industry standard in belts for decades. I've installed Gates belts on my vehicles for years and never had an issue with one breaking.
yeah, it was a bummer and they do break easily if you mishandle them or mount them improperly. it is very important to do the research before even touching one. the reason your auto belt doesn't break easily is because it can be made to take lots of tension by stretching between fly wheels. I hope I'm using the right terminology, here. the bike belt has to be rigid and not have that much tension because the drivetrain can't handle it. to make the belt rigid and strong they use carbon fibers that if mishandled can easily break.

@Flyscout Ryder it's crazy. There just isn't any magic perfect system to drive a bicycle yet. They all have trade offs. The derailleur chain drive system is still the king, IMO. My cycling friend, who is 71, is looking into getting an ebike because he's getting to the point where he needs a little assistance to stay outside and riding. They are expensive and also very heavy. Most are over 50 pounds.
@@dog-so1vj eBikes are so cool in thatchy help people like your friend stay outside doing the miles regardless of elevation gains. I sure would not hesitate to get one someday

Hello.. The color that is never seen across the distance..? RED... from a motorcycle/cycling perspective, red is the first color to disappear a dusk (i think it has something to do with the color of a sunset).. The very best color for visibility is WHITE.. Then neon Orange or neon Green for visibility.. I only wear white helmets with M-3 reflective decals.. This is the reason, construction sites have there flaggers/workers wearing neon Green or neon Orange. with WHITE hard hats.

It’s difficult to say what section is best, they all have their unique styles and motifs. I love it all. There are lots of goals I try to reach with these episodes and bringing back memories was not a planed one at first but it sure has become one once I started hearing about it. The stretch from Florence to Crescent City was a crazy one. I was soaked and so cold and had a tough time at it but at the end I ended up camping at one of several Redwood spots making the whole experience legit. Your August trip will be awesome.

I'm thinking of doing the ACA route from Seattle to LA in August....any suggestions? I'm riding a recumbent trike and will be pulling a burly trailer with my gear.
hi Steve. this route is pretty much what this season is about, the Pacific Coast Bike Route. I would recommend doing the loop around the Olympic Peninsula passing thru Port Angeles and making sure not to miss the Olympic Discovery Trail and the Olympic National Park. The camping options are plentiful, inexpensive, and very nice. lots of towns and cities to stop for food or what not. also bicycle shops plenty. the traffic can be seriously tiring at times so be sure you have the right signaling devices on your trike like flag on a pole and lights. any chance you get to get off US Route 101 you should do it. those roads are way quieter and scenic. the bridges to cross in Oregon can be close to impossible so I would recommend you consider hitching a ride over them. most cyclist I met on the route said they had no troubles finding someone to take them over. California was chill until Malibu. Malibu to Venice Beach was a scary section with crazy drivers but once you get to Venice Beach you start on bike paths along the beaches and it is a blast with lots to see. I would also consider riding to San Diego. You will ride from one iconic beach scenes to the next and all these interesting cities. I forgot San Francisco, that is a blast to ride into with so many people on their bicycles and walking around. not sure if you use Warmshowers but there are plenty of hosts along the way. i rarely use Warmshowers but other touring folks I met along the way said they had plenty to pick from. thanks for reaching out and watching. keep us posted on how it goes when you get going. enjoy

Yipes! Only a couple minutes after posting my last comment, you BROKE YOUR BELT!!!!!! I rode 26 thousand km on my first Gates belt before changing it (It didn't break, but it was really worn.). Dang! That's not a good intro to a belt drive drivetrain. Do you think it was configured too tight? I know of one other guy who's. belt (also Pinion drive) broke only 200 km south of Dead Horse, AK! Imagine getting a replacement there. --- With my Rohloff / Gates drive I always carry a spare belt. I've never had to use it, but it only weighs a couple ounces, so no problem.
I’m surprised you were able to make the I-9 hub quite. I-9 and Chris King are well known for their “swarming bees” sound.
hi Roger. "swarming bees" can get to you if you ride all day. the grease silenced it at first and then it wore off enough to not be so loud as it came from the box. my go to hub is a DTSwiss 240 and what I'll be using on the next bike. thank you for watching and the comment
The Oregon coast is very beautiful and pleasing especially when the weather is a little more warmer. Interesting that the belt on your bike broke, from what I read about these belts if twisted in a wrong way the fiberglass filaments become brittle, they should improve on this in my opinion and make the beld similar to the car timing belt that is much more durable and flexible that in a car it lasts 100.000 miles. Maybe it will come to that one day because the technology of a belt driven bike is very appealing and very good but it should not break with some minor bends. I can also hear the gears of the pinion drive as you ride your bike especially in a descent. Another great video of yours definitely. Cheers.

I like riding in cooler temps. 35 to 65F is my best range. I hear you about the belt. it was frustrating to not have a spare. I think the reason for the use of carbon is because the belt can't have too much stretch to it like a car belt. the two bike sprockets can't handle the tension of a car belt without having it slip. that's my inexpert view on it. The bicycle lane, especially in the city, is the fast bike lane. The e-bike or road bike lane. Under 12 m.p.h., fully loaded touring bike. The sidewalk is the slow bike lane. Just be extra mindful of pedestrians and walk it if necessary. If the sidewalk is clear and the bike lane is in use by other cyclists, they will appreciate you for being on the sidewalk. Remember, a fully loaded touring bike is like a slooow 18 wheeler in the bike lane
Especially since e-bikes have become more popular. A 65 year old driver is dangerous no matter what they are driving.

Les's narrations are so good. yeah, the traffic on 101 is a bit much at times. it does get on your nerves in a rattling kind of way, wears you out after all day. this route has these sections of craziness and then it really goes almost silent especially when you get off 101. thanks for watching

Hi Joe. Interesting coincidence here. I met a girl on my last year’s tour from Australia named Xanthia who was riding this Lynskey titanium bike I had never know about. Happens to be I called them up eventually after looking into their bikes and now Im riding one on this tour. Its the GR300 and its the best bike I’ve ever had. I built it from the frame and fork up with my choice of components. If you look in their website you’ll see all the info well presented. I’ll be creating a review about it but will be many months before I can upload it. Im on the road now gathering season 4. Thanks for watching.
How do you like the Comotion Divide bike?

Do you have a review video of the Comotion Divide? How many miles have you put on it so far?
After 1,000 miles on the Co-Motion I ended up switching back to my 22 year old Cannonade to ride the second half of the route. As much as I tried to get into the Pinion shifting, I just didn't. There is an efficiency form integrated shifters with a derailleur and chain that is way better. There is also the weight of the gearbox that seems unnecessary and lastly I contended with front end wobble which I couldn't figure out no matter how much I tried. It is likely form too much weight on my handlebar bag and the nature of Chromoly steel. I don't think I'll be doing a review of the bike but if you read the comments form episode one of this season you can get more of the scoop about it. I was asked all kinds of questions about the bike which I answered.
I was offered a frame set form Lynskey Bicycles that I'll be building for the next tour. It should be really sick. Check out my Instagram page to see pictures.

I need to get a high-capacity battery charger (Ebike) and some other supplies, first, however, as well as get the money to actually go - which is looking more like September rather than late May or early June.

Did you carry your food with you or just stop in each town you went thru to eat....trying to minimize my weight on my trike since the route has many towns to get water and food.
I always carry two meals worth of food with me and some snacks like protein bars but on this tour I ended up only carrying one meal at a time. there are lots of places to stop and eat at or pick up food for that day. water is everywhere. one of my go to dinners on this tour was tortellinis that seemed to be locally, or so, made and found at the frozen sections of any size grocery store. boiling them and a chopped onion then draining some of the water and adding a small can of tomatoes, good stuff. but if you want to go lighter I tend to make ramen adding this and that in it or Knorr pasta or rice packs. i often eat a big breakfast if I find the right place. hope that gives some insight.
The Oregon coast has “Fred Meyer” stores about every forty to seventy miles, based on my research. I plan on riding this route from Astoria to the NorCal border, though not in one go. (There are other stores for food, but “Fred’s” is a reliable source of food, and tends to be reasonable.)

Hi Randy. The part that broke in this episode is the Gates carbon belt which is part of the drivetrain. It is used instead of a chain. There are many reason for using this belt but mostly for its lack of need for maintenance. They are actually tough except when used or handled improperly. Check out their website for the full scoop. The other part you are mentioning here is how I lock my front end when I stop riding and get off the bike. It's called the SteerStopper. If you check out the West River episode of season 2 you can watch me talking about it towards the very end of the episode. They have a website and the owner Tom is super cool to talk to. Do you remember any really any unsafe road between Astoria and Brooks Oregon?

US Route 1 has its busy spots at times and then other times its quiet. From Astoria heading south it’s busy until Cannon Beach. After that it’s chill. Look out for the Pacific Coast Bike Route signs that take you off US1 and you will find peaceful routes here and there. PCBR is actually challenging in comparison to rail trails because of the traffic. The bridges in Oregon pose the biggest challenges and most riders ask for a ride to get across them. From what I hear there are plenty of drivers who will do the favor. I recommend it. Hope this helps. Enjoy every mile. The PCBR is so amazing.

Diego, I was under the impression that those belts were pretty indestructible, even more than chains. I guess most of these bike mechanics are not used to them. They're not usually found on regular road bikes. That bridge you were on reminds me of the 7 mile bridge back home, have you ever ridden on it?
Hi Pedro. 7 mile bridge back home? That sounds like back home for me too. I've never ridden it but have plans on doing it. I'm saving Florida for the last state of all 50 I cross while documenting it. That's the plan if I can do it, two more tours. After that, I have more plans but first things first.
You are right about the belt drive. People swear by it and it all makes sense but Im not really into it. I like the feel of the chain catching the cogs too much. I'm not sure that it is the way to go unless you are cycling in lots of dirt roads and wanting to stay away from maintenance.

@@FlyscoutRyder Yes Sir, we're talking about the same 7 mile bridge. a bit sketchy IMO, imagine you're in the middle of it and one of those super wide loads comes by at the same time, I doubt there' will be enough room in the bike lane to safely avoid getting hit.
@@pedrofernandez8729 yes those wide loads are scary at times but most are being lead by a driver in a small truck helping the big trucker looking ahead for possible dangers to avoid. after crossing many bridges I can tell you that the thought of doing the 7 mile bridge is a bit daunting. I'll do it someday when I document Florida. it will be the last of the 50 states

Hi Matthew. The plan is to start in Savannah, Georgia in August or early September and weave thru the southern states that I've not yet toured. It's a bit ambitious but I hope to cover as many as 16 National Parks starting with Big Bend, climbing over the Sierra Nevada range thru Tioga Pass and finishing in San Fransisco. We'll see. I have a Pinion Divide but I on this season 3 tour I actually flew home to swap back to my old bike to finish the second half of the PCBR. What do you run up to from your Dino hub? You just running lights or are you able to charge something too? Pedalcell didn't work for me. But that Cinq 5 thing won't work cause of my Velo happy stem and I'm not giving that up. Got some time to come up with something but wondered what your setup was. Peace.
hey LaVon. with the SON hub I run both my front and rear lights. I keep them on always. on my first tour I had the cinq 5 charging option but it ended up not functioning so I omitted it right away. not sure I found the need for it plus now I'm used to having the lights on all the time and I like it. I keep my phone on airplane mode, or off all together, and that can make the battery last for a very long time. thanks for watching. peace back to you
@FlyscoutRyder yes, lights are probably a life saver when you don't even know. I don't need the phone much either but the wahoo is very important ( to me). Hunting for electricity at end of every day gets to be a challenge some days. I have heard complaints about Shimano hub not keeping up and the phone's need to have a steady even supply while running. I might just grab a second onn. battery. They don't weight that much. Just slow to recharge stuff. Your lights are pass-thru, I'm guessing. All this stuff was not around 30 years ago. Dynos maybe. Starting at Tillamook on Trans-am then verve off and follow Oregon trail back east before picking up Trans-am again in KY. On target with fitness but need to get the mental part up to speed. It's as important as the body. Later

@@FlyscoutRyder I use a Revolution charger with my SON28 hub, and it charges my little phone quicker than from the wall! To augment my B&M rear light I also have a Cygolite Hotshot Pro 200C rear blinky that's BRIGHT, even in daytime, and I'll make a mount for it on my left rear pannier; I can also charge the Cygolite from the hub. I plan on riding the entire Pacific Coast this year: I've ridden about half of it in chunks at different times, but it will be good to do it all in one go. In 1981 I rode my old Holdsworth Equipe from Toronto across the US, then up to northern BC before ending in Socal, about 7000 miles that trip. Yeah!
