    What's 1 question you have about a player on the Dallas Mavericks?

    • @LonestarROB
      @LonestarROB Před měsícem +2

      Not 1 player but 1 group of players. Klay, Naji, Grimes. Will they fit in? I remember most everyone here excited about Grant Williams last offseason and calling him the "missing piece" . And we all know how that turned out.

    • @user-vw5ng6ds7x
      @user-vw5ng6ds7x Před měsícem +1

      Can the group put in a lot of effort to play defense? I know that’s not a player but still. Especially Luka. But then don’t expect Luka to be playing high level defense like he was in the playoffs (for his standards) in the regular season.

      @@LonestarROB The major problem regarding Grant was the fact that he was an undersized PF and that became critical once Maxi got injured. Grant couldn't guard perimeter guys like PJ Washington can and he wasn't shooting well enough, he could hold his own against bigger and stronger guys, but he wasn't tall and long enough to actually bother bigger shooters. Once Kleber got injured and the Mavs didn't have anyone taller than 6'6-6'7 outside their Centers, they became extremely vulnerable to bigger teams or teams that attacked the paint.
      Klay (6'6), Naji (6'7) and Grimes (6'5) are expected to replace THJ (6'5), DJJ (6'5) and Green (6'5), the fit makes much more sense. The Mavs actually got bigger and if Grimes can stay healthy, they still have someone to play point of attack defense like DDJ helped and Klay is still much better than THJ.

  • @jarrodsullivan9141
    @jarrodsullivan9141 Před měsícem +45

    Problem with THJ was not that one game he gave you 25 and the next game he gave you 5, it was that in both of those games he took the same number of shots.

    No, who is saying Luka & Kyrie have peaked? They've barely have more than 82 games together. I think this is when the PRIME of a pairing begins...assuming it's a good pairing. They both know each other's game so much better & it's almost like they can reach each other's mind now.
    Plus, Luka can still get better. He's only 25. So while Kyrie MIGHT start to show signs of slowing down, Luka is getting better. So at worst they're maintaining their combined levels that they had last season.
    About Klay, the Mavs are gonna be a nightmare to defend. You now have 3 lethal shooters who can space the floor to the logo if they wanted. But you also have the low post menace of Gafford & Lively. If you give those 2 just a few inches of too much space then they're gonna be found & it's gonna be a vicious dunk off your dome. Now if only the 5th guy on the court could be counted on to make 3pt shots at even just a decent 38% then what are you gonna do on defense?
    Seriously? Is your plan gonna be to leave a solid 38% shooter just to plug up the driving lanes while staying home on Klay & Gaff/Lively? And what if it's Klay, Ky, Luka & Gaff/Lively all on the strong side? You staying home or helping out on that backside? Cause that dude just might be a 40% or better when given wide-open shots. No longer is it the 35% DJJ or the extra streaky THJ & Green. It's PJ, Naji & Grimes...varying degrees of 3pt shooters, but all of them better than 35%.
    So if Dallas can just play RESPECTABLE defense that should be enough for a LOT of wins.

    • @dundalis
      @dundalis Před měsícem

      Obviously Luka can get better but the margins for his improvement at this point is pretty small. If you look at his offensive numbers it’s not like we are gonna see any real major improvements anything will be incremental at this point (I wouldn’t be surprised at some minor regression in some numbers). And defensively if you think Luka can come into the season trim and completely healthy sure but I doubt it. Kyrie you just hope can maintain and the decline doesn’t start since it usually starts earlier for small guards with a few exceptions. I think it’s a valid question in terms of the combination could see a small decline, but even if they are just as good, the team should still be better

Luka could definitely get better off the ball, he could also get better at catch and shoot. Green, Hardy & Exum all disappeared early under the bright lights and pressure of the playoffs. But to the young players credit, they each came back eventually, to who they really were.
    Invaluable Playoffs & Finals experience
    Maxi just needs to stay healthy. I'd like to see Dallas add another legit PF behind Maxi who can do some of the things he can defensively + stretch the floor.
    The Mavs 2 Biggs Lineup Maxi/Lively walled off the rim creating fast break opportunities go in the opposite direction. Going small there is an option, but not an option Imo

  • @johnbavender9775
    @johnbavender9775 Před měsícem

    The Mavericks have not hit their peak ability yet because this is a team game that takes all the members of the team to grow and expand their skills. Luka can learn to manage his health for a 100-game season. Kyrie needs to also manage his energy levels for again a 100-game season. Klay needs to learn what he can contribute on the defense as well his three-point shooting. PJ needs to work on shooting his three-point shots to it much more automatic. Derrick Lively needs to just grow physically stronger and expand his offense. Gafford needs to work on getting a mid-range offense. Naji needs to show he is actually great at everything from three-point shooting to lock down defense. Quentin needs to show he can be the lock down defender and a reliable three-point shooter. Hardy needs to prove he can be an effective point guard that can eat minutes for Kyrie. Exem needs to show he can be a good ballhandler and a reliable three-point shooter. Maxie needs to stay healthy, and show is a willing three-point shooter and work on his rebounding. Omax just needs to show he can compete at the backup level on defense and offense.

  • @mancrab1899
    @mancrab1899 Před měsícem

    They really just need to stagger Luka, Kyrie, and Klay so they can always have 2 of them in at all times, but not normally all 3 at once. Luka and kyries minutes needed to be lowered anyways during the regular season.

  • @sportfanatic5339
    @sportfanatic5339 Před měsícem

    As your 3rd option, if Klay is giving you 17-20ppg on 14 shots, that means he’s doing an exceptional job on offense, especially as your 3rd option.
    Next, is Klay worse than Luka or Kyrie defensively? Dallas is going to play a zone, so the other team is going to pick 1 of those 3 players. My guess is it’s going to be Luka.
    So why not sit Luka? In fact- games without Luka and with Kyrie the Mavs are 7-4. So they can spare not having Luka for those key moments. Lastly, if your counter argument is what Luka provides offensively, I just point you right back to them having a 7-4 record without him. That’s also not with Klay.
    We can’t make Klay the scapegoat for Luka’s defensive issues. Luka has to play better defense like Kyrie does and so does Klay.

  • @mavsdebator
    @mavsdebator Před měsícem +1

    The perfect defense that can guard every elite player at every position all 48 minutes does not exist. MIN had the #1 defense in the league & they were still exposed. The Mavs will survive one of Klay, Ky, or PJ as a POA defender for the 1st 5 min of a game.
    I must be the only person thinking the Defense will take a step forward next year. Ask 30 GMs before last season who'd they rather have out of Grimes, Naji, & DJJ as a POA defender, and 0 are probably taking DJJ. Naji & Grimes will probably play 40+ minutes combined, so between them & PJ, there will always be a better POA defender on the court than Klay. THJ to Klay, DJJ to Naji, Green to Grimes, all the Mavs have done is upgrade defensive minutes everywhere.

  • @user-bs8zt2gq1p
    @user-bs8zt2gq1p Před měsícem +1

    I don't think there is any way that Luka and Irving will match last years stats. Simply the other players have to improve in their production. Hopefully Luka can shoot free throws at +80% and cut his turnovers to 3, and score 30 per game. Irving has to play from tip off. Give us +25 per game. Key both must stay healthy

  • @ledovegas
    @ledovegas Před měsícem

    Personal stats would tell us that Luka peaked. Where Luka could become a better player or best player is to be consistent with early ball movement on offense and save energy for timely scoring. If he does that his personal stat might not look better but team wins will increase next season.

  • @theSUBVERSIVE
    @theSUBVERSIVE Před měsícem +5

    That's probably the wrong question about Klay. Is Klay defense better than THJ? Yes, so it shouldn't be detrimental to the team. And we sure will ask during the season if Marshall or Grimes might be better as a starter in his place. I think that differently from the GSW situation, in which, there was a pecking order, he was a splash bro, etc. I think that Klay came to the Mavs more open minded and I think he will be ok coming off the bench if that's better for the team.
    As far as Grimes, I'm high on him as well, but at the same time, his health has been a question mark, can he stay healthy? If he can, then he will certainly have playing time and contribute - probably more than Green was - but if he can't, then they can't rely on him. Surely the Playoffs made us forget, but Exum played really well during the season, I wonder if another year can help him be a bit of the shot creator the Mavs need. The good thing is that he is taller than most PG, so you can play him alongside Kyrie, which would be the benefit of Dinwiddie.
    PJ can play the 5 in Maxi's place but Kleber is still taller and can hold his own better against bigger guys and it would be desirable that the Mavs can somehow add a 6'8-6'10 guy who can guard the perimeter when needed and also shoot the 3s - without being afraid or hesitant, sometimes Maxi would catch the ball and not even look at the basket, once the defense knows you won't shoot, they can pressure the rest of the team differently.

    • @jimmygreer2140
      @jimmygreer2140 Před měsícem +2

      Couldn't agree more. I feel like those are the only holes on this roster. Another shot-creator (himself or others) to come in for Luka or Ky. And another Maxi for when Maxi is inevitably hurt and loses confidence in his shot.
      I feel like DSJ might be a better fit for Dallas than Dinwiddie. Exum is like the all-round guard, does everything pretty good but nothing great. Then you'd have Hardy who you hope can be that 3rd ball-handler/playmaker/shot-creator for the offense but you're losing some defense. So there's where DSJ fits in. If Kidd needs some more defense from the guard positions he can throw DSJ out there. Obviously losing something on offense, but if Harden or Shai is really on one and need SOMEONE to step up and stop them...would Exum or Dinwiddie be that dude? No, gimme DSJ for those situations.
      Only Dinwiddie if Nico & Kidd know something about the end of their bench that we don't know of. Do they already have a defensive specialist G on the roster but just haven't needed to break the glass on his case yet? Maybe a little too crowded with LuKai, Exum, THJ, Green, Hardy, and even Seth Curry for a while all being pretty healthy...there was no real rash of injuries at the G spots. There might've been ONE game where Exum, THJ, Green and one of LuKai were out and gave minutes to that not Frank Ntilikina player

      @@dundalis I like this response bc it shows he really can’t win with some people, he’s been putting up crazy personal numbers while carrying the team for years and everyone goes on about how ball dominant he is and stat padding blah blah blah, but really with a good team around him his numbers should go down (although with good shooters like klay he might finally be getting the 15 assists a game he should have often gotten if it wasn’t for lesser shooters of teams past) the response is also not really addressing the question, which is based on a dynamic between two people and not just what one persons numbers look like. Their chemistry will continue to grow and they will get a lot better as a core duo and thusly as a team, I’m sure kyrie will make up for any lack of athleticism with good decision making.
