it's not about who is the smartest. they are all certainly very well educated human beings. They tried to find the right words, decent words. Dignity. They succeeded brilliantly. Thank you so much for sharing.

It was such a pleasant moment when the singer and Scruton's chuckle of agreement deflated the garrulous, farcical praise of professionally organised football at approximately 2:27:40. George Steiner has moments of admirable insight in his writing, but he can so quickly turn the conversation into an ostentatious masque of redundant rhetorical questions - sometimes blatant oratory tricks involving absurd comparisons, which are more fit for "opinions" column space than sound discussions.

      He’s a twit.
Has more concern for his “little doggy”, and yet not once makes mention of his wife or children.
I find his thinking is an unloading of his grievances towards life.
There’s nothing there to help humanity or to progress, to transcend.
      Just misery.
I don’t get receive any insight from him.
      But hey, that’s just me.

Having watched, 'A Glorious Accident' and 'Beauty and Consolation', both the gatherings and individual interviews many times over, I think Wim Kayzer (interviewer, responsible for orchestrating both fantastic series) was attempting to build up a comparative/collective sense/camaraderie among the other intellectual giants being interviewed. Stephen Jay Gould accused him of being a romantic in this sense; that a coming together, dissecting the hardest questions, would result in epiphany moments which might've yielded in the expansion of human consciousness and understanding. Can't get enough of these interviews. A modern day, 20 years later follow up with the same interview style (for those that are still living - RIP Gould, Rorty, Sacks, Toulmin, Lederman, Kopland, Appel, Menuhin) would be incredible.

@vpro extra - I see that the Beauty and Consolation DVD Box Set is still available in the online VPO store. But I can't seem to locate the Glorious Accident DVD Box Set. Is this still available to purchase?

Hi Nick, if it is not in the VPRO store, it is not available anymore!

Thank you for getting back - disappointed to hear this is no longer available, but thankfully you did make this available on your channel to watch in full for free, etc. Thank you for this!
Though this is somewhat of an out-there request (and unrelated to the DVD Box Set for A Glorious Accident) but is there a way for me to contact Wim Kayzer - do you, or anyone at VPRO have his contact information? I am in the United States and would like to ping him with a few questions if possible. I've looked online but do not see a personal website/online presence for him
