Such a breakout role for the amazing Emily Blunt! I had seen her in some British TV series and “Gideon’s Daughter,” but who knew she could do rom-com so well? Then she became an action movie actor, then horror. Is there anything the fab Em can’t do ?

Meryl’s Miranda is iconic and so layered that it blows my mind. We could go days analysing her character, but she is so much more than a tough boss. She is a perfectionist, a woman in a ruthless corporate world expected to bring lots of profit to the industry and completely aware of constant schemes to bring her down. She can’t be anything less but fierce and detached while doing business, expecting perfection and dedication from everyone, as much as from herself.
And yet, Meryl made us see beyond the ruthless facade. She made us see the human, the mother, even glimpses of vulnerability. Andy saw that, too. Even after Andy left in Paris, there’s the connection, the understanding between the older and the younger women.
Andy left Miranda and her job in a hasty and unprofessional way, but Miranda gave her an iconic recommendation nontheless. Andy waved at her, affectionately, in the street.
That’s why the movie is so much more than the book, for me. It’s much more complex. It shows a professional business woman in power fighting to stay at the top of the merciless game. It also shows a young woman with a lot of potential, trying to find her place in the world, facing a lot of disillusionment but also gaining recognition from the best.
Miranda did not crush her dreams in the end. She actually helped her find them.
So, yes, this movie is so much more than its playful title suggests. It’s a classic.
And whatever method acting Meryl used, it was worth it!
Praise to all the cast and crew, the end result is perfection.
Thank you! I don’t understand how some people see Miranda as the villain, when she was just simply doing her job. Being the boss of any company is never easy, but especially with fashion magazines, or any other magazine really. The fashion industry is such a competitive industry, that there’s not time to be soft. If you’re soft, you get eaten and replaced by a tougher person in a blink of an eye. You can never let your guard down. You always have to be thinking 10 steps ahead, otherwise you’re old news by the next morning. And we saw a perfect and clear example of this in the movie when they were trying to replace Miranda behind her back. Of course, she was twice as smarter as they were, and that’s what made her a good boss. Always think ahead and never trust anybody.
I also liked that you pointed out her “flaws” which was literally being human (having children, going through a divorce, feeling compassion for Andy, etc). But even through these scenarios, she still put her career in front, and that is why she was so powerful. She put on a mask every morning and did her job.
eh, would have to disagree... Meryl Streep did a good job but the way they wrote Miranda for the movie didn't really make sense.
Either she was a decent person who had terrible leadership skills or she was a fearful person holding on to a career by any means necessary to maintain her value....... She doesn't develop anyone in the organization and drives away the person who's portrayed to be the most talented. Don't know, maybe that would actually work in fashion but doubt it would work in may other fields.

This was my defense of Miranda Priestly. I concentrated on the facts that are often overseen. Her sharp mind is often seen only through her iconic but cruel verbal dismissal. Her fierceness through her iconic but demeaning throwing of her coat and bag.
It all, no doubt, serves its purpose in the movie, but I think Miranda’s character is so much deeper and so much more than that.
And Andy herself admitted that she learned a lot by working for Miranda, that she screwed it up in the end by leaving so unprofessionaly, but she made her choice and she moved on to pursue her own career.

@@krokant9521 it's cool, i read the book first and that version of the story probably impacts my view a bit..... for the movie i just didn't find the Miranda take coherent in the end. seemed like they are giving Miranda a pass for her poor leadership on the basis "that's what it takes" when i don't see that working in real life.
it seems to hinge on her statement "nobody could do what i do" which sure it's is a good way to retain position and power........ but in real life you actually want to develop others to do what you do rather than horde the knowledge and power. to be fair movie Miranda does develop people a bit by holding them to a high standard but in the end who's she going to have on her team? a bunch of emilys which may function ok as long as she's there but will likely crumble when she leaves.
The fact that we're still talking about the film is a sign the movie is a hit
Stanley Tucci haven't aged a day since then. And also looks like he just got out of the shooting of the movie.

great interview, "Devil Wears Prada" is one of those movies you can throw on when you want to relax or have in the background but know almost every word and scene, a really fantastic film.
Absolutely. It's a lot like how even though it's a Christmas movie; "Home Alone" is one film that has a certain charm to it that allows you to watch it anytime of year and enjoy it. I last watched it on New Year's Eve with my sister's family and we laughed ourselves silly. My niece- who was eleven when she watched the movie- was laughing herself senseless when Marv (Daniel Stern) screamed bloody murder with that tarantula on his face.
There is no sequel do not ruin it! You all did a spectacular all around performance.
This movie is timeless, so much of the fashion still holds up and the performances from the main 4 characters are excellent
Yes! Only thing that dates the movie are the phones. If you switch it, it would still feel fresh.

She knew exactly who should wear what for every moment of the story. In a movie about fashion, her attention to detail and whole work alongside the acting has made this movie iconic.

I would so suck at that job. I would like Nigel's job. Creativity is what drives him. Setting up schedules and planning...Miranda would be missing her flights all the time.
I loved Meryl in this, and I'm not one of these people who fawn over all-things-British, but Emily, a total newcomer to Hollywood with this movie, hooked you into the story before Meryl was even shown. If it wasn't for her part and the way she played it, the ying and yang between Meryl and Anne would have never gelled as well. Nobody knew who Emily Blunt was, but the second she adlibbed "no, don't touch it." she had the audience hooked.
I love that the character Emily was played by an actress named Emily because it bonds her with the character even more. I don't know if that was a coincidence or if the script was changed. Also, I've read that Emily Blunt also adlibbed the line "hideous skirt convention" too, which I think is the funniest line in the movie. 😁👍
Imagine a studio wondering and doubting if Merryl Streep was the right choice. No one else could have played Miranda

She literally said she “wasn’t interested in doing a biopic of Anna,” she has always said her performance was not based on Anna, quite disingenuous for you to just ignore that. And by her in the next sentence she means Miranda not Anna. She's referring to that kind of woman in general, not Anna specifically. She never denied the book was about Anna but her performance is separate from the book. Do you really think Anna would love the movie otherwise? It's an insult to Meryl’s work that you seem so bothered by that. Miranda Priestly has always been iconic in her own right, there’s all the social media memes to prove it.

I still remember watching this movie in the theatre as a 14-year-old and being genuinely scared of the Miranda lady... 15 years later, this movie has not lost its edge.
This film is great! Honestly if anyone is ever too busy to be nice then they aren't someone you want to work for in the first place. I don't have time for people who just can't be nice, I just can't respect them. That whole culture needs to change, no one is ever more important than the person next to them. How you treat people in this life matters.

And you clearly missed the beginning where she said her performance was not based on Anna, so she’s not talking about Anna, she’s talking about being a woman who stands their ground against men, not acquiescing to them. There are multiple perspectives to this, which is the main point here.
I agree. That was the essence of the Fashion Industry, in order to be a part of it you had to be a b***h. I remember one day my boss (buyer) sat me down and told me that I was not b***hy enough to b a part of the industry, I went home, spoke to my partner and decided to leave. The next day I resigned and it was the best decision for my mental health. I just saw women constantly tear down each other in the most vicious way. I spoke to others who had left the company and they went through the same thing, some felt so traumatised and their self worth completely destroyed. Even after years of therapy, I still have issues trusting other women.

This movie is like a fine box of luxury chocolates, full of delicious surprises, at times you crave just one, other times you indulge yourself to the whole box. It stands repeat viewings like no other. Possibly the best expression of mainstream Hollywood.
Whoever made that wig for Meryl deserved an award, she looked stunning in that platinum wig!
I can never tire of watching this movie. It's one of my favorites. I really don't know why it appeals to me or why I never tire of it but I just love it. Perfect script, casting, directing.
Miranda didn’t try to ingratiate herself because she was already in a position of power, and we see her interacting with underlings rather than people higher up on the hierarchical scale; and, she was pretty willing to smile and be conventionally feminine while she pulled the carpet from under nigel’s feet when she had no other option (or when she was dealing with jacqueline, whom she actually hated, but couldn’t slam, because she was pretty lodged in with her position at Vogue Paris and part of the ‘family’).

Finally, a reunion of the cast and makers - fantastic! The movie is as good as it was 15 years ago and hearing behind the scenes info as well as their personal perspectives just makes it even more interesting to watch for the nth time. Anne Hathaway is just gorgeous.
Meryl's hair was perfection in this film! I've watched this film three times and enjoyed it every-time. Meryl's adaptation was classic. This casting of this movie was spot on.

I have been smiling all throughout the interview. I think I first saw the movie when I was 13 and I was so hugely inspired. This is definitely the first in my top 5 movies list of all time and I couldn't be happier to see it again a millionth time!

ikr? the incomparable Theodore Shapiro! I wish he was acknowledged here. When I watched this movie and heard his masterpiece I suddenly remembered the movie View from the Top, which is equally my all time favorite! And then I realized that he also did the soundtrack/scoring for it! He is a genius! And he created such a masterpiece music to 2 of my most favorite movies of all time. On the other note, I think Anne is already perfect in the movie and I couldn't imagine Rachel on it more so that it would have the same impact as Anne's had she taken the role.
I think the very main thing that made this movie work and made it beloved by so many people is that they made the women *actually* be good at their jobs. In the book, Miranda just kind of cruises by and never seems to be doing any important work, and Andy is just plain insufferable. She never really tries. The book is only mediocre, and most of the interest comes from the Anna Wintour thing and wondering what snippets of truth there were. But the movie showing two women who were good at what they did, albeit in different ways, has made sure the movie stood the test of time (somewhat), and was relatable to so many more people.
The book is terrible; Andie is so unlikeable. This is not an adaptation, it's a complete reinvention turning a mediocre novel into an iconic, timeless film.
eh, movie is weak sauce compared to the book..... just an opinion and not trying to bash your take but book actually says something about humanity, movie is idealized girl power drivel. movie is soft and lets everyone off the hook at the end. obviously lots of people in the comments here liked the movie and that's cool. nothing wrong with it, just didn't seem to me like it actually said anything other than confirm people's preexisting thoughts in the end.

This is by far my go to movie. Whether I am sad, happy ect. Every character was essential to the story. From the staff rushing to get their comfy shoes on to Miranda demonstrating what sacrifices needed or occur when you have to run a successful business. ❤❤❤❤❤

can't tell you how many times I have watched this movie. It comes on TV and I say to myself "nah won't watch it again" and lo and behold Im back in it. The Madonna soundtrack helps. Emily Blunt is fantastic Im not one for this type of movie but I get pulled in every time. If I say Ive watched it 10 times Im probably conservative. I don't think Ive watched any movie so many times. Not even To Kill a Mockingbird ....lol
