Riding With The Best Trials Rider In The World : Jack Carthy

- After filming my Hex video in the morning I had 30 mins rest before Jack Carthy turned up for an afternoon ride.
I've known Jack since he was knee high, I'd bump into him here at Shipley Glen with his dad and at competitions. Jack's always had a talent for riding and acquired good techniques from a young age. Now he's grown up he's evolved his riding and invented new techniques and changed how trials bikes are built and setup. Jack paved the way for a new age of riding and everyone has tried to emulate his setup and riding style but none have quite matched him.
Jack is an 8 times world champion and is still in his early-mid 20s, he's got a couple of competitors but is still in a league of his own.
I've seen Jack's riding before and on TV at the competitions but I still get blown away when I see him ride, the size of the moves he's doing is actually insane! He's getting up rocks we'd never even consider in our wildest dreams when I was riding here regularly 10-15 years ago. I'm also really impressed with his ability to flow across the rocks on a bike that I can barely even ride.
So yeah, Jack is good and I tried my best to capture his riding but he's a hard man to film as you never know where he's going next!

This might sound stupid but why isn't he using disk brakes? I thought disk brakes where like a must for trials
Disc brakes have a few disadvantages, they’re heavier, easier to break (rotors are exposed) and they aren’t as precise due to the spoke flex (locking the wheel at the rim stops any unwanted movement). Rim brakes have more bite too and with special pads and a sharp texture on the rim from an angle grinder they work better in the wet too. The down side to a rim brake is the noise and lack of any modulation

Isnt there like metal on the wheel to make the rim brakes work? Arent rim brakes like disks but on the whole wheel
Sort of, it's a braking track on the wheel, which they grind to make it rougher.
Rim brakes are cheaper, last longer and I never had a problem with their brake power even when it's wet.
This should be an Olympic event. The skill involved here is off the charts.

I get the feeling that those bikes help them a lot.. cuz I can't believe half of it... it would be imposible on an MTB

I understand the physics behind his movements, but the precision and speed are mind-boggling. He's just a coiled spring with limitless energy.

The Human form has incredible potential
He has incredible physical conditioning and balance. That combined with his skill of leveraging the bike makes it look like magic.
I feel like I'm watching some of those crazy-ass mountain goats on a discovery channel episode...

Hopefully not as painful noises as his bike's brakes...

Wow, Jack really just does what he wants. It's something I've only seen from him and Charlie in that they can literally just make it up as they go and do the most insane stuff. I'd love to see more of him on a street bike for sure!
Also I'd love to see some challenges with some other guys on the channel like no corrections, no backpedalling or switch foot! I want to see the riding get weird 😉
He's insanely flexible and strong (power to weight) for a big guy. Just crazy. Get the feeling he could be world class at most skill based sports, if he tried.
He's just so effortlessly stylish as well as amazingly smooth

Those are hydraulic rim brakes,they are better than disks because they can stop the wheel instantly

While Jack is on the scene, it will always be the world fighting for second place imo.
I've seen videos labeled 'you wouldn't believe it if it were not on film'. This clip of yours makes most of them look like grade school stuff. Even while watching this clip, it's still hard to believe that he can ride a bicycle up those obstacles. When he's approaching, you're thinking, 'can't be done, no way'. Then he clears it! Amazing, well done.
That was nuts , Jack making everything look so easy and effortless, just floats over everything. Would love to see him do another ride with you but more streety
I've watched this video several times and I still can't get over how easy Jack makes everything look.
This is another one of those super Kool sports that wasn't around when I was a teenager. When I was that age all we had was BMX freestyle, BMX racing, Mountain biking & skateboarding. I did freestyle but I def would have loved bike trial riding. It's totally amazing.

Ali, I want to say an infinite thanks to you and all your hard work with your channel, riding and advice. You have inspired me to get back into Trials after 18 years. I'm 40 in a couple months but getting back my ability far more quickly than I imagined I could. Yesterday I was on fire, I couldn't make mistakes, it was incredible and I feel alive again!!!

@@AlexButler-ke5gy I certainly did get a trials bike still riding trials and loving it. Almost 43 now. I don't do competitions due to working shifts but I can do expert level sections that we copy from the actual trial events.

It is stunning to see how fast all of his moves are and the control it has over the bike. I like the no-stop, flowy style he is putting in while moving from an obstacle to another, a mix of power and control that makes him look like dancing. Amazing to see from a trial comp rider, with a long comp bike and rim brakes. Something that could inspire many riders to evolve their way to ride as many UK riders have done during the last decade, including you Ali. Very nice video, shame to see just a few shots with the two of you riding together.

Ali, you've always impressed with your abilities and persistence, but Jack is just on such another level, as you say. I saw the link and it was 27 minutes long and was like WTF, that's long, but have to say, it was a pleasure watching such talent and it passed quite quickly. Before you got to talking about cross over to mountain bikes etc, I was thinking how would he be if you took him out for some trail riding, would the skills transfer easily, so think you guys should hook up and get out on the MTBs as well. Another also, a in detail bike check of his bike and setup. Again, great vid, really shows the level of riding at the top, if you keep hooking up and riding with the likes of him and such others, I think you'll start to improve yourself and might find you're getting stuff you never thought possible before.

I am not a trials rider, just mountain bikes, but wow I can really appreciate how difficult riding that stuff can be. Jack is insanely good. Just watching him pick out his lines, sets up and just goes for it...so good. Great style too, he seems so comfortable on the bike. I didn't think your filming was bad at all but I am no film buff. I did appreciate having more than one angle for the same section. Again, it really helps you appreciate how difficult some of these lines are. Jack's bike is nice but I have to say I love the look of your Hex, I am a sucker for fat tires. Cheers guys!

Somehow the algorithm brought me here. I usually watch tennis. But Jack Carthy is a complete other world and league. This is better than tennis! Jack can do on a bike things that I cannot do on foot. He can even do things that my cat is not able to do. Why is Jack not all the time on TV? This sport is way too underappreciated.
He seems to find grip where it seems there is none. Amazing!
Wow , watching you guys do this reminds me of when I was in my teens and I used to ride trials , always 20” tho , I had Monty’s then got a hans ray gt team trials , I used to love riding but soon past my driving test and lost interest, seeing you guys ride at Shipley makes me want to get a bike again, I’m only ten mins from Shipley , oh Iv just subscribe too, il watching your newest vids after this one ….. hopefully I get a bike soon and we could meet up for a ride 👍🏻
I’m really glad I saw Danny mac’s original films and got obsessed with the sport, proper mtb is a bit much for me as your just going so fast, but trials is such great fun, nice to see what the absolute best rider in the world is like, I may never be like him but I’ll give it a shot!
