- I'm really pleased you enjoyed my bike build last week, it was a lot of effort to polish (nearly) every part and I thought it would split opinions but on the whole people have been really keen on it!
Video here:
• I Built The Most Silve...
As I mentioned in that video I was going to ride it in the final UK National round at Shipley Glen so here we are!
I've had no more than 10 mins practice on this bike so this was in at the deep end, fortunately I've had plenty of practice riding Shipley before as it used to be a local riding spot...plenty of years have passed since then and my fitness isn't what it used to be but I still loved riding a retro bike at a retro location!
Give the video a watch to see what medal I eventually get!
HUGE thanks to Ross for being my travel companion and for helping to film, to David for his work organizing and setting sections plus thanks to all the volunteers who also helped set sections and observe...we couldn't have these comps without ya! Of course thanks to all the riders young and old for taking part.
Thanks for watching and see you next week, I hope you have a good one!

Alex is a friend of mine and over the years, we've rode many of different bikes together in our bike groups, while at the pub on Thursday gone, we asked how this day had gone for him and he said just how much fun he'd had and how great it was to ride with yourself. Big respect to you lad 💪
Only a true bike fanatic would mention the color of his new bike before adding that he medaled in something as difficult as a trials competition. Well done sir!
Great coverage Ali! So great that you have managed to bring the comp scene to such a wide audience! Thank you for the feature too! Too kind!
Thanks dude!!

Nice! I get a really good feeling watching you and the others do your thing in a comp, and it's especially nice seeing youngsters doing it. Thanks for taking us along!
That 231 is beautiful!
Thank you Ali for reminding me of manners and being courteous even when others are not so. Are patrons of these events usually that discourteous? I mean that fella just stood there with his dog'o's in your line seemingly oblivious to the situation. I would have said something that I probably would have regretted but there you have it.
My cats and I would never behave so rudely.
@@bigbird2451 hahaha
I used to have one of those blue Monty’s. Was a great bike. Mine only lasted about 18months from memory though. The next one I got was a red and white version. Didn’t feel as good as those blue ones.
Great work Ali. There is nothing like trials to make you feel fully gassed whilst moving slow on two wheels 😅 Was awesome to watch, inspired me again to dust off the (much neglected) Echo and have a roll around the yard. Cheers 👍
Called it in your build video. Silver on a silver bike! Congratulations!
Bike looked sick, well riden, hope the arm is not so bad 💪
OH my god, this is wild! i don't know what you call it but its like parkour but on a bike.
its SO different from other bike sports iv seen, the bikes are so different looking, all that precision its incredible to see.
its so different to flowy mtb trails. taking technical to the extreme
Awesome Video!!!! Really cool to put in the whole podium honouring!
So cool to see the little groms doing trials , congrats to you Ali you did great
would love to see more "one colour" bikes by you like all matt black, blood red etc
I agree but it's massive effort to match stuff well, which is why matt black is popular, striping all the parts to silver was nuts
Wow!! Amazing work
So interesting to see this competition. Thanks a lot Ali
Always love the comp videos
Awesome riding Ali!
Nice job, Ali! Way to go, Ben!
nice one! congrats! also it was cool to see other people do bike checks. love that old school stuff.
Ace watch that bro! It's such a good place is the Glen. I went there bouldering for the first time the other week and it's fantastic for that as well! 👌
Excellent video.
I don't ride trials, but love watching it. Great to see riders on regular mtb's
Awesome work Ali!
18:12 Adam representing Castleford!
Thanks for hard work making these videos while competing. Very interesting to watch!
I'd love to see you do a 20" build.
Will you ever try a 20” trials bike?
I love that you’ve been trying so many bikes and giving your reviews on each
I’m curious to what you’d think about a 20”
Wow the palace is trial heaven
so awesome. you make me jealous!
Really liked this video. You and this bike seem to jive like a couple old friends. It appears to show through in the riding.
epic video love trials
Hey Ali i have a question, unrelated to this video tho. I am looking onto getting the dominion a4's for my mountain bike but i cant find Hayes adapters, have you had any luck with other adapters? (without modification)
Thank you very much and love the chrome bike too
My God the Skills on these People! Its just Insane what you can do if you dedicate your life into it.
I was also worried when theres just blood gushing out at 22:46.
If that was a Football Player he Couldnt play a whole season with that kind of Injury.
@Ali Clarkson This was great to see you in competitive action, you are all ways a pleasure to watch in any situation. But with the other riders in action it was an extra treat.
Even though it was a random entry of you in the competition, maybe some arm pads and a little training in the gym….😎🤙
that peddle up from ross on 19.30 minutes in the video looks massive
I always had trouble with above-handlebar-height up to front on old-school geometry bikes until i started slamming the stems down and using lower rise angle stems and near flat bars (ie: boobars). It makes general handling feel a bit ridiculous, but like anything you get used to it.
Great to see so many people joining in these events, especially the young kids. Hopefully there’s minimal bureaucracy with these. Here in Canada you’d have to have a license and insurance and and and….takes all the fun out riding bikes and competing.
Why do some stand on podium backwards?
They’re standing in for someone who isn’t there (perhaps they went home early) so standing backwards shows they aren’t the true owner of that position
Congratulations Ali on you 3ed place Nice to see you doing comps after all these years on the street you still got some comp skills that’s for sure highlight for me was at 7:10 doing that gap with a little bit of arm pump is not easy and a big shout out to Daisy Craig Who won the primary senior nice to see girls Can compete with the boys and win considering it is a male dominated sport
Great job Ali and Ross, Cheers Mate!
Spoiler alert ffs. Cmon don't write sports results in your 5th word in a comment
Yay! 😁
Have you still got that ti frame? If so please do a vid on it iv been thinking about getting one or a carbon frame but the silly thing s I do won't last long lol
I love this Retro Bike. Absolutely amazing to ride with V-Brakes! How did you get the V-Brakes to work and handle trial-riding?
I find the comments about the Link Cable rather intriguing! I've been looking at getting a Jagwire Elite Link Cable for my BMXycle for a little while now, I've run Nokon Cables in the past & apart from the occasional pinging noises from them flopping & bashing parts of my bike!! I got on pretty well with them.
Your Cable looks similar/identical to the Jagwire Cable, I've had good experiences with other Jagwire Cables so to anyone reading my ramblings with experience did you notice similar to Ali?
It’s worth noting that I set my brakes return springs VERY light…as light as they’ll go without running into issues. I think that’s why I get problems with link outers as with next to no spring tension there’s not much to hold each link against each other and that’s why they end up “floating” a bit
@@Ali_Clarkson ah! Thank you for that Ali! As I'm on a U-Brake I go the complete opposite route haha, hard as I can go without crushing the springs! Next Frame I'm going with a Disc Mount! Happy to see more Trails/Dirt Riders getting fed up with Subpar U-Brakes & starting to explore Disc options! I think the biggest we can go atm is a 140mm Rotor but on a 20" wheel that's not too bad really.
It's funny to me how BMX has set a few trends within cycling, has most definitely borrowed a few ideas from the wider cycling world & then has completely ignored certain tech! A lot of Brakeless Riders within BMX but for the riders that do ride Brakes? We're willing to pay good money for a high quality set-up!!
I will say though, I'm literally a few parts away from having my ultimate dream BMX. Might be time to hop back on a Trials bike too haha.
Is there any advantages in a link rather than a wire?
@@eartharrow6772 they’re stiffer under compression compared with a standard brake cable (which is a coiled steel wire that can compress like a spring)…being aluminium it’s also lighter. It’s more flexible too so can do tighter bends than a regular cable
@@Ali_Clarkson surely any tight bend especially with a link will create a low efficiency?
Bike looks really nice.... Wondering why some guy had his dogs on the course though.
why do they 3th place sometimes stand reverse?
It’s probably too late to suggest it now, but putting honey on that arm wound would do wonders to promote healing. Greetings from Cape Town where it is still raining!
What does standing the wrong way on the Podium mean? Our season is also over, I only finished on third place 😉 So well done Ali 👍🏻
That’s when someone won a medal but went home early, rather than have an empty podium a friend will take their place but stand backwards to show they’re not the owner of that position
@@Ali_Clarkson Great idea. Thanks for explaining 😊
Hi all just looking for help! Want a trials bike for a bit of fun and to improve my skills. I race enduro. Do I buy a Danny Mac style or more a comp bike. Also I ride a 29er enduro so what size wheels. 24 or 26. Any suggestions.
Don’t go for a comp bike for your first trials bike unless you really want to become a comp rider, they’re so alien feeling and a real struggle to ride if you’re not used to them.
I’d suggest a 26” streety bike like the Inspired Hex, it feels more “normal” and you’ll find the bigger wheels will allow you to cross over the skills to the other bikes easier…even though they’re called “street” bikes the geo is still great for trials
@@Ali_Clarkson thanks for your help! Yeah just looking to improve my skills and was hoping that it could transfer on to my mountain bike! I’m lucky live in the Swiss alps and the riding I love is steep and tech. The winter months get cold here so thought it would be good.
I couldn't jump most of that *without* the bike.
Who polished the rocks?
Right, who told him that was a good place to walk his dogs?
Anyway, congratulations, and I hope your arm is healing well!
Rock rash
Congrats!
Now, with more contenders on an MTB, gravel bike next year?
Why do some people stand with their back to the crowd on the podium?
18:30 how did that not kill his deuraliure
The course was confusing af- they need to boldly number the gates. I love dogs but, why not let your children play on the timed course? a bit of a rip off there. The bike did look amazing in the sun though. Time to get into welding, then you can install massive discs.
Whats this „show your Back thing“ on the podium when honored? Why do some turn their back on the audience and klapp hands on their back???
And Gratulation for your good ride and place and get well soon 💪🍻
I got a set of magura mt12s for $8
I'm surprised that they let people like that guy with the dogs on course. They should have let you rerun it.
Well, sorry to swear, but f*ck that! I don’t think there would be one part of my body intact after tackling any of that, including my teeth! Kudos to everyone who even attempted any of those sections, especially the mountain bikers! I’m off to ride over a brick 🤪🤦🏼♂️
Ali make it gold next time and you will be 1st
Not that retro though is it Ali? Get one of the old silver framed megamo 26's for some true retro! Managed to pick a full build up on ebay for £36 years ago!
Oh hey! first!
Let's set up a referendum for independence of Scottish bike trial federation. And do it every five years. Should be good fun.

Interesting, looks like this bike didn't suit you at all for competition.
the first season of Drop In TV is proof enough that you never NEEDED a trials bike to do sick trials stuff
