New Corvette Stingray C8 v Porsche 911 review | USA's hottest v Europe's best | Autocar

- The 2021 Corvette Stingray has arrived in the UK. And it's ace. It has a mid-engined 6.2-litre V8 making 495bhp which means it's good for 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 184mph.
And it costs? Well, it depends. It could be as much as £130,000 because at the moment you'll have to get one via an importer such as Clive Sutton (clivesutton.co.uk) to whom we're very grateful for the test of this car.
The new C8 Corvette, though, here goes up against Europe's best. We've got a Porsche 911 Carrera, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine making 380bhp, hitting 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 182mph, at a cost of £82,793. But those relatively low power and speed stats have never held a 911 back before. In fact, the 911 and Corvette are two of the few cars that could try to claim to be the greatest sports car of all time.
So which is it to be? Join us as we hit the circuit to find out.

For Christ sakes is there one single automobile test in Europe where the pavement isn't wet or its not raining lmao
Solid review. My neighbor here in California just sold his C7 to somebody in the Netherlands ! And upgrade to a C8. Now as a Porsche owner, the C7 steering was pretty damn good and damn near my 997 S in terms of feel, and the interiors on the higher spec models are pretty damn decent. The C8 is another huge step forward. They’re really getting pretty good. However, here in the states they’re a relative deal. A fully loaded 3LT Z51 $90k or so before tax compared to a base 911 starting at $100k or so. From the sounds of it, very different than in the UK
If you live in the states the c8 is a hell of a bargain. At least they will be when sold at MSRP. In europe not so much. The importing costs are just too expensive. I can see why the porsche would be the better bargain there.
Yep. This is the reason not to buy one in the UK presently. Its not the physical import cost itself, its the taxes and profit margin on top. I've seen them for an incredibly inflated cost of £129,000 in the UK, there are many better options available for those fortunate enough to have that sort of money for a car, and cheaper. Closer to US base cost, these would sell very well in the UK.
With it’s reliability I wouldn’t call it a good deal.
Yep same in NZ
Still cheap in the UK compared with the porsche
Corvette are just made for the usa not for the other country
The thing to remember is that this is the base model and is a car that most buyers will never put on the track. The Z06 model will be a high-revving track monster.
1st time I've heard the Corvette referred to as "lovely".
Are you European? That’s probably why. Jeremy clarkson is like jesus to yall
Say what you want about corvettes but you aren’t getting close to them for the price in the US plus, you aren’t getting anywhere near the maintenance free mileage. I have multiple friends with >250,000 mile corvettes that still drive. Zero German or Italian sports cars anywhere close to that many miles without major overhauls.

That was a very nicely done review.
The c8 is the best American car in ages. It’s one of my favourite cars, the c7 was awesome, but this is next level.
My son had a C7 and got the c8 a few months ago and they are both crazy cars but you are right, the c8 is insane. great video ,everybody here stitch picking apart a car they don't own or will ever afford, I driven and seen new Porsche's with paint and interior problems and this is Gm's first generation of the mid engine Corvette and has done quite well with it most people are pretty happy with them, Porsche has been at the mid engine game since the 50's and it has been pretty much hand built since the beginning and refined for countless generations and are still trying to downplay their IMS problem from 10 yrs ago and even lately in 2017/18 , so it is not without problems even though its refined and engineered to the crazy standards that no other company matches , so the Corvette is a great car for its first iteration of mid engine sports car 2 DR and decently priced. Happy new year to everyone
I really like the car reviews on here but I feel like there's a missed opportunity to put out video essays on other aspects in the industry. Would love to hear that from you guys
The Corvette looks weird at the rear to me. I'm sure it's because of the weirdly contrived overhang which they put in to create that tiny boot.
yes its ugly AF...
It’s because they put the exhaust on the sides NOT in the center like all mid engine cars to make it practical ! Americans have a stupid obsession in that every corvette has to fit a set of golf clubs in the back and that’s why it looks ugly
The trunk is not that “ tiny”
@DJGladTV Most people can’t even tell what generation, and even which type of Porsche it is because they all look alike. I’ve never seen a car brand stick to the same design for so long
@@TheZ06Drifter I’d rather it be more practical and look weird towards the back, than to look better and not be practical at all. You barely even spend time looking at the outside of your car.
I enjoyed watching the Video
I own a 2018 911 GTS and a 2020 c8. I love the look of both a lot but in my experience, the 911 is faster, sounds better, feels better, and is more fun to drive. I wanna love the c8, but Porshe beats it.
One car is 180k the other is 80k, it should be better.

Autocar: This is actually a brilliant car, and despite the hilarious cost to import one, is still a great vehicle overall
The entire fucking comment section: "ERMAGERD STITCHING IN ONE SPOT OF THE CAR! IT'S LITERALLY UNDRIVABLE!"
Great, those suckers don't have to buy one. The list is long for those who do. I like my Porsche, but the design hasn't changed much in 60 years and counting.
This particular example seems to be Clive Sutton's press car that's making the rounds in the UK. The stitching issue is mentioned in comments incessantly in every other UK video about the C8. Guys: it's this one car.
@@davidnicholson6680 And honestly, if it wasn't this one car, it's still a single line on a side of the car you as the driver will never see. It doesn't affect the driving characteristics or mechanical operation of the car-- it's some fucking stitching. Some people need to get over themselves and their hate of american cars.
C8 vs 911, is a real thing now, going forward!
Nice review..
Corvette is simply more fun than Porsche. Starting Corvette in the morning will never get old. I’ve driven both and 911 feels to me like an improved GTI

I'm not from the states, but there is simply no competition for it at that price. Closest thing dynamically would be a base cayman S... which is just lame in comparison.

1:47 why couldn't they make the stitching on the dashboard meet properly with that on the center console?
All these Corvettes have poor quality control. It's been rushed
GM isn’t known for their build quality.
@Ben Daulton Sorry you got triggered. Fun fact: I worked for a Tier 1 Automotive OEM supplying components to the GM E2XX platform. The DFMEA only required a listing of all passive electronic components -- no active components. Now guess why I don't own a GM vehicle.
The Z06 model in '21 will be a real interesting car, especially for what it will cost in the states - which should be about the same as a GT4. It should be a track beast without risking nearly as much cash as a European counterpart.

Both gen nsx and 2020 911 and both are different but great, and great value for money.
So the Corvette does not offer those things? And you know this because....?
I have had a lot of super cars and have never purchased a Porsche because the interiors are a super basic and very bland, when you spend this type of money you need to tick all the boxes, it’s not all about power / performance. I have just ordered a C8 because it actually dose tick every box, even the most important one value for money. Also let’s not be fooled every high end super car dose come with problems I don’t call that value for money, if you have ever had to buy parts for a super car they are super expensive, to remove and replace the clutch in my gallardo basically cost the price of a new small car, my Audi R8 magnetic ride suspension failed on the front it cost me $3,800 per side plus fitting, some one stole my AMG gts badge $290 to replace almost at $100 per letter. Then you have the over inflated service costs $950 for a basic oil change. I think the C8 will cover every one of these issues and be reasonable to own. ✌🏼😃

And the sad thing is here in the US, we have the reverse issue with 911's being extra expensive and the Corvette really being the only sensible "bang for the buck" option. For the same sort of money you'd spend on a 997.1 Carrera S you'd be into a C7 Corvette Stingray Z51 and I don't think anyone can really argue which is the better car there. As soon as you get into the $60k+ territory you're talking about "like new" C7 Z06.... when you can only get into a 991.1 S. And for that money here you're already talking about a NEW C8 Corvette.
Indeed. In Europe you need to make a choice the 911 which goes better through the curvy roads with better interior or the Corvette which is faster in the straights and with a Lesser interior. In Canada and USA there's no discussion Corvette is a bargain. And for places where the vette is not oficially imported (such as where I live) the Corvette makes no sense with the 911 being 3/4 of it's price. That's what I think, Corvette is very reliant on its price
@@user-rx9ny4yo2e 100% agreed. At US based prices the Corvette is a steal and it depreciates very affordably as well. It's cheap to run here and there is a Chevrolet dealership on every corner. It's not a rare car while still having that cool factor that everyone seems to stare even at a base model C7 driving down the street. They have almost a super car presence with a huge fan base and yes they are all fast in the straights and curves while maybe lacking some of the steering feel and refinement of 911. The "Porsche tax" her is very real and painful to buy and run them. And oddly going back to the "super car presence" you will generally get more attention in a Corvette than a 911 if you happen to care about that sort of thing.
This all being said if 911 and Corvette were in the same ballpark of price given their model year it would be a much more interesting discussion.

The MRSP is just under 60k USD. You have to add on all the taxes etc (UK cars have VAT included) so need to add round 10% more depending on the state. USA prices are all quoted tax and fee free because these vary by state. You can’t drive a Corvette off the forecourt anywhere for the MRSP.
@Evo Shift Well OK, but you know what I mean. It’s hard to quote discounted prices on a video because these vary. The fact that the C7 had transverse leaf springs was a shame. The front-mid engine layout is far from dead as the GT500 and Mercedes AMG GT have proven. Heck, even the Alpha Chassis that underpins the Camaro is better. GM was just unwilling to invest the time/money into a proper double wishbone or even a decent multilink rear for the front-mid engined Vettes.
@@flyingphoenix113 More truth has never been spoken. Don't get me wrong, I love the FR corvette and it is an great handling car too, but, with the wishbone or multi link could've made it even better handling car and it was always inferior to the other sports cars in the suspension department.
@@naseeb46, what's more, it would have solved the C7's notorious rear traction issues. The C7 ZR1 was such a disappointment because it couldn't use its prodigious power the vast majority of the time.
Cross talk is quite unsettling on the street, but nearly non existent on a smooth track. There are also lots of coil over conversions on the market. Also the adjustability of the suspension in stock form is ridiculous. I can and have changed my ride hight, camber and toe in my driveway with nothing but wrenches (spanners) and washers. It wasn’t hard to level the car with my weight in the driver seat either.
@@flyingphoenix113 This is nonsense. The notion GM wouldn't invest in a double wishbone setup yet retooled to make a completely new MR chassis which is faaaaaar more expensive tells you how totally ridiculous and illogical that statement is. FR is simply traction and physics limited. Simple as that. Ask any McLaren, Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, Pagani, LMP1 or F1 car. If anything GM took too long to get to MR. Now did GM execute perfectly? Of course not, they are GM are do GM things which usually means dumb. For me this C8 is just the beginning and has lots of room to improve, but it's just the first entry level model with all season tires, hardly a Z06 or ZR1 edition. Also if anyone is somehow able to get one at the base price of $60k GM is probably losing around $10-$15k on each car which is why the avg purchase price ends up being around $75k

@Ben Daulton people hated the C7 design at first especially the rear.
That 911 is timeless, gorgeous, and faster around a track.
At its price, it should be.
It’s nice but way too pricey in America. Corvette is the more sensible choice for Americans
I think the 9/11 a ugly beetle 🐞 but thats just my opinion
You mean the 911 is ugly 50 plus year old design that’s twice as much money as the Corvette with less performance. Once the C8 Z06 is out nothing under 300K will touch it. Just like the C8R is dominating the race tracks now.
@@craigthescott5074 911 turbo. and every 911 is worth the price, trust me. drive one
We are coming for Porsche's scalp. The Zee 51 is the "entry level" Vette. Wait till the Zee06, ZR1 and Zora come out. Murica, hell yeaaaah. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Deluded, yank interior design & quality will never match 🤣
@@DanLMH also the driving dynamics. and the DCT in the Vette is slower than some Torque converters out there
@Evo Shift man, importers are selling these corvettes in Europe for almost the same money as the 911. Talk about overpriced...
@@DanLMH Stigma. I sold my 981 for a C7 (7MT + Z51) which is of lesser interior quality. But honestly I don't care a bit. When the V8 thrust kicks in and the screaming eagles coming out of its quad-exhausts reverberates off the walls, it puts a smile on my face that the Posch cannot get close to. And we are not talking C8 yet. Most reviewers are rating its interior fit and finish at par with Posch. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
@@RaGeAlucard The reviews, I've seen - including this one, puts its DCT at almost par. Remember, this is Corvette's first attempt at DCT. Porsche is already at their 3rd or 4th Gen. Just wait for the Z06 and see Porsche GTs running scared. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Show me where I can get this for 60k ples 😭
If you were offered the choice and If your selection would be your only car for the next 12 months which would you choose?
911
C8. I don't like rear-engined driving dynamics though.
Corvette hands down. I’d even take the C7 Z06 over the 911 it’s a 50 plus old design that’s butt ass ugly. Twice as expensive for less performance.
The 911 is more beautiful and luxurious, but the C8 seems like it has a higher fun factor than the Carerra
My father in law just got the Z06 version. The engine broke the second time he drove it.
911.🖤❤️🖤
I hate it when people bring up the leaf spring thing with Corvettes, because it really means they don't understand what was going on. When leaf springs are used as the entire suspension to locate a live axle, yeah that's a bad-handling setup. The last Corvette to use that configuration was the C1 in the 1950s. The Corvette leaf springs were transverse, acting as spring and anti-roll bar, on an otherwise-conventional geometry independent suspension. Compared to coils it was much lighter and the center of gravity was lower. But, it was fairly unique, which meant that it was a lot more difficult to engineer and produce aftermarket springs, and it could sometimes get in the way for some maintenance jobs. They went back to coils (starting with the C8!) partly for that reason, and partly because an entire generation of misinformed Dunning-Kruger snobs were looking down their noses at the "primitive" leaf springs, and that was bad press.
I’ll bet you have driven the Porch a lot mod than the vet
What colour is the Porsche? It's beautiful.
Aventurine Green Metallic
@@michaelanderson4318 thank you kind sir 👍
Stitching in central console is way off!!!
Stitching is overrated it's just thread. Wouldn't keep any sane person from the purchase of a great car.
@@jonesjonz1 if I buy an $80k car the minimum i'd expect is good build quality. That stitching doesn't belong even in a $10k versa!
@@andresguerin7162 your not paying 80k for stitching your paying for a performance bargain. Go spend 250k if you want perfect stitching and great performance. A simple dark stitch would remedy the "eye sore" and look saved 170k hiding my offset thread problem.
@@jonesjonz1 so you are saying it takes a 1/4 million dollars to get correct stitching???
@@andresguerin7162 of course not, I'm say there is no reason to knit pick thread alignment when your getting one of the best performance deals on the planet fresh out of the box. Also I think that extra stitching is an option.
The stitching on the centre console is misaligned with the dashboard.Sloppy quailty control.
Here in the US the price for the Corvette is much more reasonable than the Porsche. For driving they are both spectacular. But the styling of the 2 is drastically different. The Corvette styling is stunning. The Porsche styling is timeless and classy.
Both cars are fantastic. If money is no option then I would prefer a 911 Turbo. But if you are merely well off (not rich) then the Corvette is a fantastic purchase. I love both of these cars, but own neither 😀
Na the 911 styling is old it’s 50 plus years old. It’s ugly and outdated. 911 is twice as much money for less performance. Corvette rules hands down.
@@craigthescott5074 like both but performance in straight line is just porsche handling don't even guess but mid engine could help
@@michaelcarlsen3078 the C6,C7,in the Z06 will handle with the 911’s. The C8 Z51 will also. The C8 Z06 will be a game changer for the Euro cars. Corvette is not messing around with this generation.
130k is an loaded Carerra S .. nice cars
02.00 - all I could see was the hideous stitching at the dash/transmition tunnel meeting point! And this is while Mat’s telling us about improved American car interiors 😂
It is quite funny, the diversity of opinions on the interior. It looks good to me, of course I'm watching on my phone while driving... I need to see one in person
@@genericallyaccepted I don’t think he criticizes the whole interior just the horrible stitching
First units got those stitching problems. Should be solved in the llatest cars
@@genericallyaccepted Oh I actually don’t mind the design of it, it’s way better than most American car interiors, but you wait until you re watch on a bigger screen and see the quality issue I’m talking about haha
@@marfrandema1884 Haha that old chestnut! I don’t understand how a car is in development for years then something as relatively simple is so badly done, on a car that’s given to the press! You won’t find many press cars with wonky trim from many other brands. (Aston Martin have been guilty of it also btw, so it’s certainly not an anti-American comment)
Why not have both? I just have to rob a few banks first.............. for unrelated reasons.
That Porsche was beautiful what spec was that???🤯🔫💣
Sud hav been between corvette vs Carrera 2-S.
i live in the states, and drive an 07- 911 S. i prefer it to the corvette. he was driving a base against an all the extras corvette. i have am on my 4th porsche, each time i upgrade . the s. models are a big difference to a base model.
that is a base corvette with upgraded brakes and exhaust. There are many 3 more upgraded models or this platform that has yet to be released and will be released in the coming years.
Corvette C8 for me. On the wait list at my dealer, $72,000 as built with options here in the states. A bargain!
They're gonna sell it to you at window sticker?
@@bman99ss Yes. Small town dealer. It has had deliveries at MSRP.
@@MrMustangrick Having just sold my C7 after just one year of ownership, I'm tryna figure out what to get.
I'd order a C8 for window sticker, but I don't know where to find a willing dealership . . .
@@bman99ss shoulda kept the C7 I’m keeping my C7 Z06 manual and saving for the C8 Z06. Won’t get rid of my manual car tho.
I think the Audi R8+ would be the best option at 130k. The Vette looks like something from Grand Theft Auto and all new 911s look like Beetles with the fat bulbous rear end.
@Evo Shift 142k for a 2021 Audi R8 new and and less than 130k from 2018 used is definitely not overpriced. And looks are subjective.
Audi R8 didn't evolve much in design and is probably as fast as the corvette with the 0-60 timing.
What I'd do is to wait for GM to officially bring in the C8. Quote pointless to pay 40k more to the private importer
You've seen a lot of butts and maybe got gunbutt, R8 is not even as good as stable mate Porsche
The C8 Z06 will blow the doors off the R8 when it comes out this year and for a lot less money.
The alignment of that centre stitch on the Vett, tells me all I need to know on it's build quality.
GOtta love the mismatched stitching on the center console. Weight distribution of the Vette is 40/60, and the Porsche is 38/62 - pretty much the same, which is a very desirable one for racing, accelerating and hard braking.
So you're professional opinion is " I don't know, they're both great" ...?
For me the argument has always been that you can buy a car strictly on the noise haha ... people always fought me about the fiat 500 abarth, but man when you hear that little thing go. Entry level Porsche’s don’t have the character I want from a drivers car.
What is a drivers car? And what character does the 911 have that you want different?
Genuinely curious
Nice but a LHD sports car in the UK is like having your shoes on the wrong feet... imo
Especially yank junk.
@stringer 2295 Limeys gotta keep up with the rest of the world. RHD is ancient
The corvettes dashboard stitching not lining up is kind of annoying haha
I'd take the 911, even in base form over a C8. But the C8 is one hell of a value for the money.
1:48 the stitching on the centre console and the passenger glovebox cover is so misaligned it would've embarrassed a Dacia! How did that even get passed QA???
They are copiyng Tesla QA
Agreed. Would drive me nuts
Why has no-one, so far, mentioned depreciation. Porsche depreciate very slowly, and some actually rise in value. The Vet - well, good luck with that in Europe.
Btw the $60,000 model is actually selling for $80,000 bc dealerships are marking them up
What do you think a new Z06 could "flip" for if you got one early? $30k more easily
Even at 80K it’s a better deal than any ugly ass 911. Talk about outdated.
