Dude you obviously don't understand what I'm saying, the movie he was in was not about bullying, he was in a movie that was trying point out the things that make us human and the things most people worry about don't make us human, the connection we share with each other is what makes us human. You for example miss interpreting what someone is saying the inter-webs causes a negative connection, so with that said I believe you're being a Wanka for no reason

miljenko1 I think that was the entire purpose of Adam in the film, we become hypnotized - just like Scarlet - through this almost schizophrenic experience of modern society and then there's this bloke: vulnerable, not trying to seduce her, not even caring about what she looks like, just stuck like that fly on the wrong side of the window. He pulls us back into reality in a surreal way, surreal because to me he made me wonder what defines beauty (and in an extent reality). This guy, with what we call a disfigured face, still has normal hands which suddenly become so weird in their appearance compared to his face yet he is the kindest person we meet until that point in the film. Sorry it that doesn't make any sense but just look at your hands, doesn't it make you wonder how that ever came into existence? Something so familiar can become absolutely alien once you actually start paying attention (which the guys obviously don't, drowning in their horniness) and they don't match to what they're supposed to look like in your mind, to me that's what this whole movie's about: expectations.

  • @sizlax

This guy seems pretty charismatic considering how he looks and what he's been through. He does have a pleasant voice. I have mild hyper nasal resonance and people generally treat me normal until I open my mouth and then I get that whole "oh... you're special.." vibe. Being treated badly because you're different is just in the way that Americans/Canadians are raised. We're raised to shy away from things/people that we perceive as ugly/different. You won't see as much of that in some other countries.

    • @sizlax
      @sizlax Před 2 lety

@d R you're not entirely wrong, but I made that comment 6 years ago. You are partially wrong though, it's worse in first world countries because of how all the normalized things become mainstream so much easier, and how most people in first world countries are 'educated' into the mainstream ways. It's funny, those that are literally uneducated, often appear more enlightened over those that aren't.

@dinar7082 While I can't deny that you're right about your first comment; the second comment isn't very well thought out.
Obviously I can't compare to his issues given his harshly malformed head. That said, it's not a bloody contest. And not every deviation needs it's own label/category/support group. Discrimination affects all that deal with it in a negative manner, and should be shut down across the board.
Also, my speech isn't nassaly, it's monotone; which means I'm constantly stigmatized as being retarded. Yea, I'm not the elephant man, but my life hasn't been a picnic either.

  • @USMCCombatVet4TastyCrayons

I met Adam on a train. Not literally, but he made an upload that I saw on CZcams, and I immediately started getting a serious vibe of comfort and confidence (or charisma? Or both?) from him.
He didn't make me feel angry, sad, bitter, or disappointed in humanity, like most people do. He didn't remind me of bad times or even of bullying or human cruelty, despite the honest reality that such thoughts are going to be forefront when around people that are considered "different."
I didn't see my own struggles with integration with other people that first time I met him on a train 9000 miles away, or his - or anyone's. For a moment, I just saw someone I could feel a kinship with, living a GOOD and POSITIVE life with a GREAT PERSONALITY and an awe-inspiring, upbeat and charming personality.
Honestly, there wasn't even jealousy or envy (though there rightly could have been, he is such a zen, loveable soul - something I haven't the slightest clue to even faking). I just quickly went from watching to listening to his calm, upbeat words and "you make it look so easy," casual charm. He even made, "it's your boy" sound charming - a first in my book!
A chance train encounter and I have watched several videos/interviews of him, subscribed to his channel, reached out to express my admiration in the comments of several videos, and hope to find a spark of inspiration to find my way back (maybe, just a little) to the guy I was before I got so mad and jaded of this warring, bickering, greedy world full of ignored suffering and abandoned children.

Because it can turn into "positive" bullying if you use this man as a joke or try to "bring a smile". Make his heart smile not his face, for real. Id shake his hand like he was Billie the Kid or some other badass because he is like a soldier on the frontlines of emotional warfare. You give those people proper respect. Rob a bank? Rob ten banks? Hello Adam. I saw the programme regarding Disabled victimisation. I am deaf in both ears and started out with the big square hearing aids of the late 60's and early 70's. I was bullied at school for being deaf and told to 'Grow some Backbone' by teachers regarding complaints about the bullying. Little has changed in all that time. Deafness is often discarded as a serious disability...........until someone suffers from it. There are so many kinds of Disablism yet it is still unaddressed. Thank you anyway for highlighting this.

Many have sever physical and/or emotional issues as well. I can’t believe how many deaf people in the USA are denied education, how many fall through the cracks and how little public schools offer for deaf people, honestly they suck helping most people with any challenges. Just watched this movie. I didn't fully understand it, but still thought it was mesmerizing. I have to say that the part that moved me is the part with Adam Pearson. The whole time, I was analyzing it, wondering what it must be like for this guy. What it would be like if I was born that way. What would it be like if he was my child. I thought, strange as this must sound, the conversations I would have with him, telling him he is beautiful, he is just different. That people in ignorance don't know any better.
In the movie, The woman asks him if he has any friends, if he ever had a gf. His answer is no. She asks him when was the last time he was touched. I was right there with him in this part, imagining that he is wondering if this woman is serious, if this is some type of cruel joke. She takes him back to kill chamber and slowly undresses. In wonderment, he asks "Is this a dream?" I felt so much anger that she was doing this to him. Then she let him go.
After the movie ended, I searched up Adam, and yes this is the real him, he has neurofibromatosis. Adam, if you ever read this, you are a courageous, brave soul. Bravo!

im soo happy that Adam made that document on BBC 3 bringing disablity crime to light. You should be proud of yourself Adam everyone is different and this shouldnt make a difference. We should support each other. People can be so mean sometimes but we have to be tough and strong. But i do believe and agree with him that disablity crime should be treated exactly like religion crime, etc. Were here together to support each other. Thanks for bringing this to light appreciated!!! xx

Although NF1 is not a dominant mutation (50/50 chance of NF with 1 affected parent), my husband's NF1 gene/mutation was inherited by all 4 of our 4 living children (I lost half of my third pregnancy on Remembrance Day 1995), by the time we had 3, we were told that we were the only family in Canada & possibly worldwide, to have all children affected. I was offered amniocentesis for our 4th, "so I could terminate if we found our fourth for us carrying the mutated gene, (rather forcefully, as we were part of a study) but had no intention to terminate a child because of NF1 and there is a 1/200 risk of pregnancy loss from amniocentesis, so I (finally quite angrily declined, stating that I would not risk my pregnancy on a test that would not influence my decision to have my baby. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is generally less disfiguring than type 2 and we've been somewhat lucky as all tumors are in areas where they can be hidden by clothing though plexiform neurofibromas (the sort that Adam, our lad on the video has, generally not removable) do hurt if struck & #2 son had "friends" who found this amusing, (though by the kids' description, the pain is comparable to being kicked in the groin, there are many other physical manifestations that my children do have on their faces, these are known as Cafe Au Lait spots, and nobody has one that's terribly large though our eldest daughter did feverishly cover hers with makeup and her hair during her teens. Though they are all more at risk for learning disorders (we didn't have those), fine & gross motor skill problems (we did have those), bone abnormalities - in the support group, we did have a friend whose child needed a growth plate removed from his leg as it was nearly one foot greater in length than the other ( we were spared that), heart disease, hypertension and a host of other things, we've been quite blessed so far. With all of that said that doesn't mean they are not affected one has a rather massive tumor on his back that cannot be removed, one likes to jokingly tell people he's been in a knife fight as he's so covered with scars from tumors that could be removed and my youngest who is a PT, has developed one in a very inconvenient spot on her hand and needs surgery at the moment. NF1 is no walk in the park, and I would still say I worry more for their physical condition than a vote anybody being mean, as I have taught them that that doesn't matter because people will find a reason to be mean no matter what, so far that has been enough for them. So much more is known about this condition now then when we were having our children and my husband was never diagnosed until the kids were. People with NF1 will have Café au lait marks greater than an inch (no fewer than five to seven, #1 son has greater than 150), on their body and these can be quite large. There will be large freckles in the armpits and groin area, regular eye exams are important as the optic nerve is another place where tumors can grow and marks called Lich nodules kind of like mini Cafe au lait marks, are visible on the iris as well, one of our daughters actually was born with hazel eyes but they are now green as she has so many golden spots on her irises, they are quite beautiful! As a young mum I was actually told by a doctor that my child had the same condition as the Elephant Man which was a bit distressing but thankfully we were referred to a geneticist who set us straight on that. And if one is the gift that keeps on giving and can kick into activity again anytime there are chemical changes in the body, for instance puberty pregnancy menopause and andropause, so you're never really in the clear. That said we are extremely blessed to have our children and if we are blessed with grandchildren, none of the kids would terminate if their child had NF. My heart goes out to this fellow because although my children have suffered from the ignorance of others, we have raised them to feel special (as a matter of fact I always told them I was jealous that I was the only one without spots). They do suffer from pain, one has had seizures, two have had tumors removed, one no sooner gets a tumor removed and he's got another one. All of this said I would not change a thing and I believe that our children are happy to be alive. I defy anyone to hurt them while I walk this Earth for they will Rue the day they were ever born. Just wanted to add that I admire Adam for speaking up and for creating awareness about NF1 as so few know anything about it. When our eldest 2 were born, the genetic disorder had only been identified about a decade earlier & I've had to educate doctors (when the kids were wee, so much more is known now). We are still part of a medical study & all 5 affected family members are written up in Canadian medical journals, 2 are "eye models" as hubby and eldest daughter are "excellent examples of Lisch Nodules". Rather than being harassed, Neurofibromatosis sufferers need compassion and doctors working to treat and alleviate their pain.

Hi Adam ~ I just watched your documentary on BBC regarding disablism; I'm disabled but suffer from what's called "Invisible disability" here across the pond so face a different set of prejudices (including discrimination due to the fact I'm transgender). But what I really want to say, beyond Thank You For Making that Documentary, is: All those tumours look SO painful.. knowing they grow on your nerve endings, makes me want to cry & hug you :'( Additionally you seem like SUCH an amazing person, sweet and funny and cheerful despite all the hateful crap you have to put up with. I hope you see this comment and maybe we can be friends.

True inspiration. How anyone can ignore and discriminated a person for having a disability is beyond me. They didn't ask to be the way they are. We are all individuals. In this day and age we should surely be more aware of our actions and how they affect others. No person is disabled. They have an impairment. But by other people who for whatever reason are classed as normal create the disability. We don't put ramps downs, we don't teach our kids. In society we should help knock down the barriers holding impaired people down and help them up. If all just help create the ramps, help provide more guide dogs and actually talk to a disabled person it will make their day. Everyone shuts them out and it is wrong. Bring them in. Talk to them and help them. Stop taking the mick and educate yourself cause if we all help disablism become a thing of the past. P.s. I'm 16

As someone who has lived with a facial disfigurement myself (albeit relatively minor). I can definitely equate with Adams comments on the interview. One of the worst things is people's prejudice, often motivated by anxiety. I watched the documentary on BBC three the other night as well.
I have to say I did have my own take on the experiment towards the end of the BBC three documentary. Did they score lower the second time around because talking to Adam genuinely changed their perception of disfigurement, or merely because they knew the purpose of the test.
