  • We bet you know Blender as a 3D package, and it might even sound strange to think of making 2D art in a 3D environment. However, Blender offers you the possibility to do just that with the Grease Pencil object. And although it seems rather pointless since there are many software dedicated especially for 2D art, it can actually provide huge value. In this video, we will break down the Grease Pencil object and shed the light on how powerful it is and how can you use it to your advantage in your projects.

Grease pencil gets me soo excited for bringing life to my 2D drawings and paintings!

Honestly the sculpt mode and noise modifier alone have saved me ages of time on a few assignments. (Also, for any professional 2D work, I _strongly_ suggest getting a graphics tablet like a Wacom-they last forever and make a world of difference over a mouse.)

Is there a single comprehensive learning path or syllabus that you recommend for Grease Pencil? I have been learning blender by bouncing around CZcams and diving into whatever shiny tutorial catches my attention, I love it, it is so much fun. Am wondering though if perhaps I could be more effective if I took a more structured sequential approach, at least with 2D since I'm finally just getting started on it? Thanks.

Marco Bucci's channel has a 3d environment for 2d animation playlist which helps understand most of grease pencil, I'd recommend checking it out.

You've likely already found the answer by now but in case you haven't, it really just depends on the hardware.

Blender biggest flaw for me is redrawing my work. I do not like the idea of having to redraw my work into a 3rd or 4th platform just for the sake of movement.
I should simply be able to upload the image. If it’s not that simple, all these pros are pointless

really what I've found useful with it is the fact that you don't just have a good 2d animation program but also the power of blender. Blender has alot built in like 3d modeling and texturing, rigging, compositing(vfx), particle systems, and more all built in. You can do things like do Npr(Non-photorealistic rendering) to make 3d objects look 2d, rig your grease pencil objects like in toonboom, use a particle system for rain snow or dust, and more all in one software. Though what comes with this is the fact that grease pencil can be unintuative to use and learn. You have to approach it kinda like a 3d software than a 2d one and it takes a while to get used to. Personally I really like the fact that I can 3d model a full scene with a 3d camera on it, animate my character, and add vfx with compositing all in one software and all for free.
