"Stop FLEXING Your Right Knee" in the Golf Swing to Hit Powerful Golf Shots and Prevent Injury

  • WANT MORE TURN? AN EFFORTLESS SWING? STOP FLEXING RIGHT NOW! The FLEXED LEG swing thought has damaged more backs and golf swings in the history of golf. Learn how you can access more power and consistency by free-ing up your trail leg to ALLOW MORE TURN and also ALLOW THE HANDS TO SWING IN instead of lifting and chopping.
    When you flex your leg, the hips stop turning, the arms get lifted, you experience tension in your lower back and trail knee. You have to drop the club in the downswing and most of the time you will chop at the golf ball like a forester. STOP MAKING GOLF SO HARD. Allow the trail leg to straighten and life will be so much easier for you.

    Thank you Tom! About 25 years ago (I'll be 58 in Sep) I tried to be a he-man lifting one side of a piano we were buying for the kids. I badly pinched my sciatic nerve in my outside, lower portion of my right hip area. Ever since then I've experienced right hip pain whenever practicing or playing golf. Just discovered and subscribed to your videos. I tried your advice to just let the right leg straighten naturally and lo and behold no hip pain! WHY WAS I MAKING GOLF SO HARD!? : - ). Probably because I had that load your ride side, keep your right leg flex, build up that coil tension crap drilled into me just like you said! Thank you thank you thank you for giving me a pain free and natural feeling swing! How did we get from that beautiful Ben Hogan swing to all the junk out there today? Huge fan of your videos!

    Tom maybe the greatest golf tip I have ever heard. I will let you know. All my life I was not aware of the dynamics of the swing you have illustrated. But since during the pandemic I have written approximately 9,000 words on the golf swing and noticed the other day a few minutes of your video. It stuck in my mind and I was able to see my weakness in my very studied swing (my kabookie dance) I think that is aJapanese dance. ) Not different than salsa. I’m old school (school of hard knocks) . Learning without instruction. But even with instruction a pro might not pick up on such a subtly in my swing.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety

      Wow Frank - that's quite the golf swing autobiography you've got there in the makings!! Anyway, I'm very glad you enjoyed this lesson video and hope it helps you!
      I can't speak to the kabookie thing, but I will plant a seed with you regarding my online school because - although I provide the lesson and drill content - it's all self-guided. Essentially I'm giving you a road map to learn and ultimately take ownership of a body-friendly, low-maintenance, consistent, and powerful swing, and you're doing all the navigating and the work (while having available at all times an exclusive portal to ask me specific questions along the way as needed). So based on this format I don't think it qualifies as formal teaching, thereby allowing you to carry on without breaking your personal mantra of instruction-free learning. Beyond that it's just $10 US/month or $99 US/year. Just in case you wish to go out on a limb and check it out, here's a link to more info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga

    I did this on accident during a round a couple weeks ago and i hit the ball right at 315yrds. Im 5' 4.5" tall and i weigh 160pounds. I've always been a pretty long hitter compared to most. But now im 55yrs old and i never realized how i lost my swing over the yrs. My average was down to 250yrds. I beleive if i can continue to implement Sagutos golf tips i will not only regain a longer more powerful game but lower my scores. Irons are much better also. Now i just need to sharpen my short game and find someone to teach me to putt again lol. Looking to shoot in the 70s sometimes soon. Thanks Saguto

  • @johnk.atchley5079
    @johnk.atchley5079 Před 2 lety +4

    I'm back from the range to say your advice works. It works. Thank you Tom. I have been playing golf for 59 years. It's amazing how you can learn so much better now thanks to videos from experts like you, from the ability to get detailed data on every aspect of the swing, and from new technology like GEARS. I have watched countless videos, focused on the best, and worked hard to improve my swing. At age 80, I am sure my swing is now technically far better than it ever was.
    One thing I have worked on is hip rotation, getting the right hip pulled back behind me on the backswing, and the left hip pulled behind me away from the ball on the downswing. However, your advice to keep the right leg straighter was the KEY to executing that correctly. With apologies for being long, let me explain as it may help others do what you are telling us to do.
    Today at the range I observed that if I focus on turning the right hip back with my right leg braced but still flexed, it creates a tendency for my shoulders to turn a bit to the right. They can actually get just outside of my right foot if I don't remind myself to stay over the ball, to keep my nose over it. Slipping into this error probably happens in part because I have been focusing on making a wider swing arc, keeping the left arm straight and back, not allowing the right arm to fold but pushing it away from my shoulder. Concentrating on stretching the backswing to the right can lead to the shoulders moving horizontally to the right rather than just rotating around the spine with left shoulder low and right shoulder high. But if my shoulders move to the right like that, it is difficult if not impossible to get re-centered back over the ball on the downswing. The result is shots with fairway woods, hybrids and irons struck thin, low and pushed to the right, or even topped. I had a streak of that last Friday playing a round and it wrecked my scores. I was really frustrated trying to figure out what I was doing. It was only on the last two holes, when I focused specifically on staying over the ball on the turn back. The result was two nice approach shots to par 4s, a 7 iron and a 6 iron (I use classically weak lofted forged blades, with a 36 degree 7-iron).
    HOWEVER, I went to the range today to work on your advice to stop flexing the trail leg. I found that if I keep my right leg straighter, it not only makes it easier to turn the right hip back, particularly if I let the left knee turn in, but it also causes the right hip to move up. That makes it natural and easy to simply rotate the shoulders around the spine while staying centered over the ball and maintaining the spine angle. I also found that if I can more easily turn the right hip back, I can rotate my torso and shoulders more while staying centered over the ball. (Thinking about The Mechanic and your comment that golf is a rotational sport!) This in turn allows a bigger swing arc and thus more swing speed, which as we all know means more distance. On the downswing, the right hip gets lower while the left hip gets higher. It helps increase speed and improve contact if you have shifted your weight a bit onto the left foot and straighten the left leg in what some coaches call a "piston" move. This doesn't have to be the extreme jump up that some pros do, just using a bit of force to push down and straighten the left leg. That straightening of the left leg causes the left hip and buttock to naturally turn back away from the target line and allows the right knee to come up alongside the left knee as you finish facing the target the way your are supposed to do.
    So, bottom line, thanks ever so much for an extremely useful piece of advice.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 2 lety +4

      What a fantastic summation of the Stack and Tilt body motions, John!
      To help with the backswing hip action you are referring to, I have a drill in my online school that presets hip turn in order to help members feel and ingrain it. I call this the "Elkington Setup" because Steve Elkington actually played some Tour events that way while he was learning S&T.
      I sincerely appreciate your detailed post and I'm certain it will be helpful to others. Thank you also for your very kind words regarding my instruction; I'm very glad to know that it has resonated well with you!

I would normally play 2 degrees up right, but when I get the opportunity to practice your methods I’m concerned my clubs would be to up right, consequently the heel of the club will be digging into the ground first. At range today was struggling. I had set up correct, shoulder turn etc. But nothing felt right. My downswing was the problem. Then I remembered about the knees. Suddenly, by bending the lead knee and straightening the back knee, everything came together. Natually, the hip bump followed by hip turn. All crisp shots using different clubs .

    I have for years suffered lower back pain and I think I stumbled on why by this video. I can't wait to test this out at the range. Irony is I think my back felt better with my knees flexed at start of address position.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 2 lety

      Your knees can (and should) be flexed in the setup. However, if you retain that same trail knee flex during the swing it will restrict your turn, and that can certainly put undo strain on the lower back and other parts of the body. So set up with your weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs) and both feet flared out 10-20 degrees, and then allow your trail leg to extend in the backswing (it doesn't need to straighten completely) while you gradually load more weight into your lead leg. This should allow for a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing.
      The body-friendly features of this swing are well-supported by the fact that significant number of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless distance, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.

    Right on...Danny Maude talks about this in his CZcams channel. Just as Tom notes many people were taught to keep those knees flexed and just as Tom predicts, ouch !!! back pain. Seems the European golfers have this leg straightening thing taught to them, maybe because not many were very muscular years ago with the exception of some modern players like Rory and even he straightens his right more than most American players.

      How interesting and sad it is that with all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness….

    Full disclosure here. I am a bit of a swing style junkie. Check out a swing and work on it, get a feel for it and move on.
    Tom here had exposed me to something very interesting. Light speed application and results. The neatest part is how quickly my golf brain accepted it and made it work. Those niggling doubts and sense of needing to control or at least think about what is going on are gone.
    This right leg post, bang on! Today at the range I fiddled with the right leg issue. Any time the right leg softens into a flex position, CHUNK, or a least a significant loss of distance.
    Thanks again Tom.
    On a side note an older than myself duffer was working on his swing beside me. He had a classic smooth swing like you are teaching, same form and mechanics from what I could see. As he was leaving he approached me an complimented my smooth easy looking and effective swing, best part he was a Brit.

    One of the things I use to train me to do this is to concentrate on “right hip pocket back”. I think this is especially useful for beginners in that it quietens down your body and simplifies the swing.

  • @jbrian53
    @jbrian53 Před 3 lety +1

    Allowing the right knee to straighten a bit more in the backswing was one of the final pieces that fell into place after years and years of thinking the right leg/knee needed to be a stable pillar of concrete. My shoulders were 90 degrees but I didn't have the flexiblity to get the club anywhere near parrallel without disconnecting my arms and lifting the club. But, by allowing my knee to straighten just a bit, the club is now nearly parallel, my wrists hinge more, and I have more time in the transition. Most importantly, I can hit balls for an hour or two with no soreness in my back or sides. What's funny is that on video the loss of flex in my knee is actually pretty minor, but it feels big. Focusing on a solid right leg might help somebody battling a beginner's reverse pivot or sway, but if somebody hasn't had those problems for years, and doesn't have the upper body flexibility to complete a full swing with a quieter lower body, then straightening the right knee a bit near the end of the backswing is worth considering.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Před 3 lety

      The straightening of the trail leg is an integral element of the body-friendly Stack and Tilt swing that I teach! This move frees the trail hip to achieve a 45-degree turn, which means we then only need another 45 degrees of shoulder turn to get to 90 degrees total. In fact, in this Ben Hogan video that you commented on - czcams.com/video/iejRWhuB7y8/video.html - his right knee clearly straightens and facilitates his turn.
      Thanks,

      If the swing motion is properly executed, the trail knee will regain flex as it retains its outwardly-flared orientation at the start of the downswing, and then it will ultimately re-straighten through impact and into the finish. If the motion is not properly executed and the leg kicks forward prematurely, then all bets are off on what will happen... 😎
