One of the great things about Maynard is that he always appreciated his band members (at least on stage) by calling them out after their solos and shaking their hands. Most band leaders did not do that; you only need to watch Buddy Rich and Woody Herman.
Two things that really caught my eye in this performance; 1: OMG MAYNARD IS SWEATING MORE THAN BULLETS. You can see just how drenched in sweat he is through his shirt, and enough to where he had to have a towel on. 2: It's hard to ignore how passionate the Japanese crowd was. Typically European and American crowds (based on just what I've seen) don't clap and jump up and down to this kind of music when they go see it live, but it looks like Japan is an exception. They really appear to be enjoying themselves and having fun.

Listeners of All Ages ''Japan has been hosting jazz tours for years,'' said George Wein, the longtime organizer of jazz concerts who put together the Madarao Heights effort. ''But there's been so much publicity here about jazz festivals in America and Europe that the Japanese seemed to want their own.''
