Still Life Gouache Practice Exercise: Drawing Bell Peppers

This video shows the full process of drawing bell peppers. I use gouache to paint the sketch. I am a beginner to gouache. However, increasingly I find gouache easier to handle than watercolour.

Here're the steps:
Step 1: I drew the initial sketch using the pencil and made sure the basic shapes are there
Step 2: I use a light wash in the beginning the apply the main colours. However, I try to introduce some dark values to get an idea about the areas that should have darker values. I also applied a background at this stage
Step 3: Introduce dark values to the objects. This will greatly enhance the quality of your painting. Repeat applying dark values until you are satisfied about the dark/light difference
Step 4: draw the shades
Step 5: Give the objects a final touch. Add dark values if needed. Use white colour to highlight shiny spots.

As you can see, I do not follow the source image strictly. I just borrow the initial shapes and shades and then paint freely. So the final painting is quite different from the source image. I find it easier that trying to reproduce the source image as is.
