Sad how these people were treated over in the old countries. I’m Native American and we put up with the same type of stuff, we were also considered derogatory. I’m fascinated with the SAMI culture, there are a lot of similarities to my tribe in Wyoming, Eastern Shoshone. One of my friends from Michigan found out that she is one of their descendants, that’s what she told me she also found out they weren’t treated very well and a lot of them hid their ancestry when they came over. As for myself, I consider them a distant relative to us, I’ve always gotten along with them, and I would like to learn more.
My Finnish side of my Family in Michigan was Saami, my great grandmother NEVER talked about her heritage and my great grandfather passed before he could tell me. To this day my heart aches that the only thing I know was that they told me they were Sami/laplanders. I wish someone could help me understand my ancestry..
My great grandmother was adopted and thru dna testing found her biological sibling’s children and grandchildren from the Michigan/Minnesota area. I have learned I am also Sami which I found as a awesome surprise. I have always loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and bush crafting. It was just another element that helped explain my being and personality.
What would you like to understand? I am Sámi and was raised Sámi. We do now live in California but we lived in Northern Norway growing up and living Sámi!
@@sonjabw4197 He's right. In Norway I heard Sami say it's a derogatory word .Not everyone young knows that, I think, but ithas to do with history and how Sami people was treated.
I had NEVER heard of this before right now. I had no idea ANY Sami people came to the US. I only previously heard of them being in Russia and Scandinavian countries. I've heard of the Inuit but never anything about Sami people in Alaska.

thank you for making this video which was very educational for me. I had no idea of any of this before I saw this video. it saddens me deeply to hear of this mistreatment of these people.
Seriously ... the Sammi teach others how to be reindeer herders and brought them here ... to only be denied their way of life. Wth 😥 here's one for the Sammi's.
This was a government deal between the Sami to teach the Yupik Eskimo how to raise and farm reindeer. They were all volunteers. Several still own and raise a large number of reindeer.
One can conclude that when the US Government would no longer allow the Sami to herd and grow their Reindeer herds they pretty much destroyed the only way those people could make a living. The Sami were not well enough educated to defend their rights.
Sámi here. We were and are educated. The problem is that we have known throughout history as being welcoming and peaceful while others do not share the same wishes. :-(
There is a book about Finnmark, and the Sami. It has to do with persecution for their relegious beliefs...the book is called, "The Mercies", and I truly enjoyed it This is possibly of interest to people who like historical fiction novels...it sparked my interest in the culture, along with having a haplogroup(u5b1)common to the Sami
There is actually a theory supported by linguistic, cultural/folkloristic, genetic and all around historic evidence, that the Uralic people, which Sami people are a part of, are related to many North Asian and even to the Inuit-Unangan peoples of North America, called the Uralo-Siberian theory. It is definitely not supported by linguists worldwide (even though the resemblances are eerie), but it is gaining monentum. Similar to the case of Dene-Yenisean, originally rejected, but now closer to being confirmed.
The Sami came from Asia and settled in Northern Europe very recently about 2,000 years ago? The oldest European people are the Basque there Laguage predate the Indo European.s There is the oldest Europeans, they were the first people to settle in Europe they have been here for 45,000 years.
If I went to Canada I would think this man was from a local native Canadian tribe. or Native American I respect Native Americans and there culture a lot of people from Asia did come to Europe instead straight from Africa like they would have normally done. There is another group that came from Asia about be thousand years ago called the very Romani they left India and was sent into Europe

All of their hard work and knowledge exploited for what? It is a shame they were uprooted and exploited like that.
Yes it was a genocide attempt.

That already answers the question that I was about to ask.
She passed away helen sara neymeyer ? how can I contact with these 2 young samis ?
Probably through searching their names on facebook. Yup, the sami community is that small..
very informative.

They were oppressed in the same ways that all aboriginal people were.
