@@margaretjohnson6259 - True, democracy and republics are fragile and unfortunately, terminal in a society that allows itself to become progressively more ignorant of history. Once a society becomes sufficiently benighted of true history subversives begin filling the void by feeding false narratives to the impressionable (the young, poorly educated, as well as those racially and religiously insecure individuals typically attracted to a more toxic form of nationalism fed by such insecurities). But we should be aware that these people are merely pawns being used by the true threat (the motivated subversives) which are typically internal threats from those both capable and "highly" motivated to push the false narratives necessary to achieve their agenda. IMHO what many Americans fail to realize is that the upper classes, the 1%'ers and wealthy industrialists in particular, have traditionally found democracies to be impediments to their ability to make, increase and or maintain their fortunes (organized labor, taxes, OSHA, etc...). We saw this in Europe and here in the U.S. in the 1920's and 1930's. As long as democracies and republics have vibrant and thriving economies, they are relatively safe. Its upper classes, 1%'ers and wealthy industrialists are increasing their fortunes and satisfied to remain supportive of their governments. The moment the economy takes a downturn this supportive dynamic quickly reverses. This is exactly what we saw in the failed 1934 conspiracy (by select members of the old American Liberty League), to overthrow FDR and replace our government with a fascist regime (an event now known as the "Wall Street Putsch"). Some important history that Americans would do well to brush up on. History that's been largely covered up by those culpable who referred to the allegations as "Perfect Moonshine" while they where forced to hide behind their wealth, their legal teams and their lackey politicians. An ugly time when America's republic came very close to falling by the hands of its more entitled citizens. IMHO, similar subversive forces are once again at play. America has several multi-billion dollar industries that see a Left-Leaning government that's beginning to listen to climate change, as an existential threat. Just as the Rockefellers and Standard Oil did in 1933, the industry has stealthily circled the wagons and drawn a line. The old American Liberty League didn't disband in 1939 as we've been led to believe. They simply went underground to be resurrected as the new GOP.

I recommend that everyone watch "The Handmaid's Tale". Many people claim that the series is anti-Christian, but in actuality, the series mocks the people who use religion to control people ( particularly females ). Even though the people in control in "The Handmaid's Tale" profess to be Christian, they seldom mention Jesus, but over 90% of the time, they espouse the worst parts of the "Old Testament". The series uses verses from the “Old Testament” ( where a wife was barren and she allowed her husband to have sex with the wife's handmaid to produce an offspring ) to justify raping a class of women called "Handmaids". Any disobedience can be punished by whipping and if it continues: lynching.

Several days ago NYTimes columist Ross Douthat, who considers himself more Catholic than the Pope, any Pope, wrote a defense of the so-called Traditionalist movement in the Catholic Church and their fervor for the Latin Mass. Not once did he mention Jesus or any aspect of Christian faith. The message of Jesus is not important to Traditionalists. The underlying message of the column was that this movement exists to have a Church within the Church, to produce its leaders, to judge the purity of believers. Traditionalism is not about exercising faith but exercising the the rites of the Church in their proper form or format. But this movement is an extension of the Fascism playing out in other spheres of our society, especially since all these Traditionalists are also MAGA Trumpists. All 6 conservatives on the US Supreme Court fall into the Traditionalist camp, esp. Alito and Amy. To see Fascism in American religion one need not read fiction. Read the decisions of SCOTUS.

When you hear a story, it becomes part of your neural network of familiarity. Are these stories of warning or stories that build complacency? Who is telling the stories of how Trump is defeated? Who is telling stories of peace? Are we telling stories of the world we want or the world we are afraid of? Unfortunately, the fear part may just have to play itself out.

It might be a mistake to assume Trump would not crack down on culture. He hates the greater part of Hollywood and SNL already. I'm sure he knows nothing about painting (for instance), and doesn't care about most of the arts that are deep into self-referencing for reasons known only to the glittering cognoscenti. Trump is currently fuming about the recent biopic that portrays him in a less than flattering light. And Trump would likely have some asshat like Steve Bannon run the cultural assault. (Bannon's fairly smart--in a twisted sort of way.) A Trump future could well force an exodus of artists, or the formation of an underground. The latter might actually be interesting, and might give the arts a much-needed shot in the arm. I'm thinking of the writers and painters in Czechoslovakia during the dark decades of the Soviet Union. Lots of amazing stuff was created. But ... lest we forget, Trump was a "star" on The Apprentice for ... something like ... forever. So, on the whole, Trump would probably see culture (pop culture?) as a goldmine for his creative depravity. (Gold f*cking high-top sneakers!! I want some) Any sane person is going to have to figure out how to roll with the clown punches soon to come. And to think, people imagined history was dead. We're deep in it. The correct term would be neofascism, since fascism normally are connected to uniforms, boots, swastikas and violent gangs beating up people in the streets. Neofascism was formed after WW2, inspired by Bardeche, who wanted a more civil and legal form of fascism. The ideology of hate towards foreigners, communists, socialists, liberals, was the same, but neofascists put on ties and jackets and is elected to the parliament, where they try to collaborate with conservatives. The focus is on changing the legal system and putting neofascist judges on high posts, which will make it very hard to return to democratic rules. This has already happened in Hungary, Poland and Turkey. In some way it has also happened in USA, and to get rid of the neofascist Supreme Court will be very difficult. And probably they will be involved in Trumps more serious trials, connected to the coup attempt J6.
