  • An in-depth look at New Zealand's current motive power fleet, from the perspective of a semi-knowledgeable railfan. Believe it or not, this video is shorter than what I thought it would be (only 49 minutes as opposed to over 60).
With thanks to Riki Simeti for providing some pictures of the 'DC' and 'DH' diesel locomotives for this video. James and Matthew also provided some EF pictures, and I apologize for forgetting to use them in the final edit.

Really nice video mate, watched it entirely and thoroughly enjoyed it! Cheers for the little mention at the end about TR 701, it’s being looked after by yours truly to the highest of standards 😂👍

Nice and informative video. Luckily they came back on the decision to withdraw the EF class.
Now that they run passenger trains between Auckland and Hamilton my idea is, why not close the gap in the 25kV catenary between Papakura and Hamilton, it's 90km of line and then they could run faster and more regular passenger services between Auckland and Palmerston North, and when the gap from Palmie to Waikanae where now the 3 kV from Wellington ends is also closed (75km) a trough operation with multi system locomotives is possible. The Stadler br159 runs on diesel and on overhead electric under different systems, like 15kV AC, 25kV AC and 1500 and 3000V DC, so technically the one can do all locomotive exists.

Excellent video very nice watch would love too travel over too see these fine locomotives myself someday especially the older models here in the uk we had the same thing with all of the older models getting replaced by the class 66 I live next too one of the busiest freight corridors the country an I see at least 50 or more of them a day at least 90 percent of all freight duty’s are pulled hauls by them wish there was more verity gets very boring even have them running under the wires though few times a day we get the caterpillar powered class 68s which make a hell of a noise and GE class 70 locomotives plus old class 90 electric locomotives and on rare occasions we get 1960s build EE class 37s dragging new stock from a to b

I've certainly heard of the Stadler locomotives, but I have no opinion on them at the moment.

If the Caterpillar engines in these sound as good as those on the class 68 in the UK or the br159 here on the European continent you will pick them over the DL.
Because, at least for a modern diesel locomotive, they sound awesome. I just wished that they made especially the sides of the cabs a bit nicer, the low cantrail and side windows look so odd.
