  • This tutorial demonstrates how Drop Zones work in Final Cut Pro X, and it shows a way to fix frozen Drop Zones (which is a common problem you might encounter when working with Drop Zones in Final Cut Pro X).
Here's a link to my recent themes that I demonstrate in this video:

Man, thanks so much for clearing up a simple yet frustrating issue I had flying in a movie clip and having it sync... I was simply "selecting" the clip for drop zone and not putting it at the first frame! 6 hours later, I found your vid with what I was doing wrong! Should have looked sooner! ;)

Hi I havent quite understood it clearly. how do I assign a specific part of a clip in a specific drop zone. I understood when skimming it starts from the beginning of the project but how can I see the clip section that I specifically want in the drop zone ?

Great video. How do I duplicate drop zones? I'm using a slideshow template from Motion Array that has 12 drop zones in the inspector on the right. I want to add additional images but I don't want the same images to repeat. If I extend the timeline it is still only using the original 12 images. How do I extend the template to use more than 12 images?

Question: Looking for a way to curate submitted videos that come to me 9:16. 16:9 and 1:1. I want to be able to play various submissions inside a cohesive FCP video, for branding purposes etc. I work a lot with 4-H youth for instance, so if we were doing a theme campaign and received 10 videos, I'd like to be able to present them without ghosting or having the black bars. Can I do that with drop zones or is there an easier way?

if you do what you did to solve the problem (create duplicates of the same video in the compound clip you made), then what will prob happen is that you will get a looping video in your drop zone area - depending on how long, and what time-point the drop zone area appears in your template/generator clip the drop zone appears. (Once the first copy of the video clip ends and the next copy begins again). Right?
A better way is to get the video you want to drop (into the drop zone area/screen in your template/generator clip) to play at the precise point you want; and to more easily visualize what you're doing, is:
    1. Select the template/generator clip that contains the drop zone/s you want to use
    2. Skim through the clip to find the point in the template clip that you want the soon-to-be-dropped video clip to start playing in the template clip (eg. where the screen/area that will play your dropped video appears in the template/generator clip)
    3. Park the playhead at this exact point, and set a Marker there (keyboard shortcut = “m”)4. Select the clip you want to use in the drop zone later (from the Photos library sidebar browser, for example), and add it to the storyline (not into the drop zone!), by selecting this clip on the browser and pressing “q” to connect it to the point where the playhead is parked (the clip will be placed ABOVE the template clip)
    5. Drag the connected clip left so that it snaps right at the start of the ENTIRE template/generator clip below it (KEEP SNAP ON)
    6. Select this “connected clip” (the one connected the template clip, above it), and park the playhead to the start of this connected clip
    7. Press Option+F to create a Still Frame of this connected (video) clip. (This still frame will be created where the playhead is parked - at the start of the connected clip, in this case - pushing the connected video clip to the right, to take its place on the left)
    8. Grab the right side of the Still frame clip and drag it out to the marker (since SNAP is ON, it will snap to the marker’s point)
    9. Select both the Still Frame clip and the Video clip next to it, and group them into a compound clip (Option+G)
    10. Select the compound clip (which is above the template clip), and toggle its Visibility OFF (by pressing the “V” key) (in the Viewer you will now only see the below template clip when the playhead is over the regions where both clips coexist)
    11. Select the template clip to highlight it, and park the playhead where the marker is
    12. Click on the drop zone button (in the template’s control menu in the inspector) to activate the clip dropping function (In the viewer, both the drop zone area and the main image area which will show the template clip only (since you have the template selected from #11, and have toggled the visibility of the compound clip off from #10)).
    13. Click on the left edge of the compound clip above to select its first frame (when you hover your mouse pointer over the left edge - the first frame of the clip - you will see a “film strip” design on the left edge of the Viewer which confirms you have indeed selected the first frame). When this is confirmed, you may click the Apply Clip button.
    14. Click the Apply Clip button on the Viewer

@@izzyvideo It sounds maybe more complicated and tiring than it actually is. But I had to write all the steps in detail so that someone reading them will always be able to confirm if he/she is doing is correct. Once you do this 2, maybe 3 times, at all goes really quickly and you no longer need to check back to the checklist ;)

For some reason, I can not get the "Apply" button to activate so i can click on it. I've watched numerous videos and it will NOT highlight and therefore I can not use the plug-in. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I use FCP 10.5.1, FX Factor is curent and have a iMac Pro (2017). Processor 2.3 GHz 18-Core Intel Xeon W; memory 128 GB 2666 MHz DDR4; graphics Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB; Fx Factory 7.2.2 build 6575; intel -64 bit.

    • @izzyvideo
      @izzyvideo  Před 3 lety

Usually if the "Apply" button won't activate, it's because you're trying to use Photos directly from the Photos Browser. For some strange reason, Apple won't let Final Cut Pro work that way, so you have to drag the photo from the Photos Browser to your event first. Then once a photo is in an event, you can use it as a source for a Drop Zone. But you can't select a photo directly in the photos browser. It has to be in an event first.

If you are still struggling, if you are creating a drop zone from your timeline, make sure it has no cuts and if you have cuts, you should create a compound clip and your drop zone will work smoothly. You can reference it here: czcams.com/video/Z5Vu1UVRwGM/video.html&ab_channel=izzyvideo
