2017 Audi SQ5 345PS V6 Petrol - Is it worth £65k ?!

- The hugely popular Audi SQ5 has had a face lift and hits the streets powered by a super smooth V6 petrol engine with 345PS and 500 Nm. Stylish and discreet from the outside and stunning on the inside this performance SUV certainly makes a statement. The performance is more akin to a Hot Hatch and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face !
A huge thanks to Portsmouth Audi for letting me have access to this beautifully specced car. I am always grateful for the support they give my channel.

Thanks for the great review. I keep watching the video in anticipation of my SQ5 arriving in January
You are going to love it Marcus :-)
Looking forward to watching another great video
What a great video. I loved you talk around of the car. Thank Francois
Cheers Francois. I'm playing with my new DJI Osmo gimbal !
What Cameras do you use for you videos?
As always a great review Mr Ped. Don't know why you have 3 thumbs down already :-( I like your manner and presenting style and wish the negative people would go elsewhere.
Me too, but I guess we have to put up with them until they get bored of annoying me and go elsewhere !
Thanks for the review. I'm picking one up in 2 days. The test drive blew me away like no other car has
I bet you are counting down the minutes !!!!
1650mins, or 11.30am Sydney time
oh, and play up Pompey!
Got one on order so really appreciated this review. There have been a coupl eof reviews by the UK motoring press but not in the UK so this was the first "real world" review I have seen. Would have like to see a little more about the interior, controls, infotainment, virtual cockpit, etc but overall I really enjoyed so thanks.
Thanks for the feedback. For Virtual Cockpit you could check out my TTS review. It is very similar :-)

Matt Somers would be interested to know your owners opinion on the SQ5 now (presuming you have taken delivery?) mine is due to be ready in may.
Love your reviews! Thank you
My pleasure :-)
Excellent review! You clearly had fun driving the SQ5. :-) I very much like this one, too.
It fantastic that there is finally a petrol version available. My uncle has the previous version but as diesel and I feel it is great but not excellent. A car like that just simply needs to be a petrol to be truly excellent.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I was certainly a great car to drive and made a great noise !
Another great and informative review :) many thanks ;)
Cheers Dave. My pleasure and glad you enjoyed it :-)
Great review video! Very good video quality.
Thanks Carlos :-)
Great review,my sq5 is due next few weeks can’t wait 😊
You lucky thing. You are going to love it :-)
Collecting one on Friday to go with my Caterham 420R. Fell in love on the test drive - it's an epic family car.
Great garage 👏👏👏
@@PetrolPed Will be better when my Atom 4 comes in 2022! 😂
Just bought the exact spec/color SQ5 here in Los Angeles. Was nice seeing your video made driving around the Meon Valley. Lived there from 1998-2001. Good to see you got the one nice day of summer to video! haha
It was a good day...and you are right, probably the only one we had !
Great review ! Thank you 🙏
My pleasure!
Been waiting for this Mr Ped!
Hope you liked it Mr Ray :-)
LOL
+minicooperman Oh, go away you fatuous little fool. Child.
or what
+minicooperfan... Wow. How long did it take you to come up with that retort? If wit was sh#t, you'd be constipated.
I have this car. It’s fantastic, for those bothered about the mpg figures in this day and age of expensive fuel, the long term average I’ve got as I type is 27.7mpg and the best I’ve had was a 95 mile drive to the Suffolk coast which saw 37.6mpg. If the trip was longer I reckon you could see the early 40’s from it..truly is remarkable.
At the same time if you don’t care so much for mpg, whack you foot down and you’ll love it.
Excellent review. I have been debating to consider this over my A5 Sportback. Having seen your video I'll be visiting my Audi dealer for a test drive :)
That is always good to hear :-)
a thumbs up you will get. great review.
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Great review, I considered everything u said on this video and went and test drove one and ended purchasing a prestige SQ5 and love it. I get compliments all the time! Thanks for the review!!
My pleasure. Glad you are enjoying the new car 👍
Great car, bought mine about 5 months ago (2019), only complaints I have is the front breaks grunt or groan when coming to a complete stop especially after a wash or when the breaks are cold, and was not mad about the fake exhaust tips but have got used to them. I did have the 21" wheels sprayed gloss black as my car came with the black trim option, looks 10 times better with the red brake callipers staying out nicely.
Nice 👍
Great review of another fantastic Audi. Don't forget to get hold of an RS3 asap 👍🏻
I'm trying :-)
Another great review thanks Pete - but sort out the voice and music volumes !!!! kept having to play with my volume controls to avoid waking up the wife.
It's a tricky balance and a personal thing. For you, which was too loud ? Thanks for the feedback.
Very watchable, well done.
Cheers Jamie. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great honest review .. I'll buy one when they're 30k . Don't like new car depreciation very much . Mine will be a diesel though.
Nice review. Just picked mine up in mythos black. Corker of an SUV!!
Arieff Hassan Oh nice. Lucky you 👍 Enjoy the car 😎
Hi Peter. Great video as usual. Picked a nice day for it too. Never really been a 4 x 4 fan myself, but I can see the attraction. Good visibility, safety and practical. Even less sure about a performance 4 x 4 either. Don't see the point and a huge price tag to go with it. Just an idea for you Peter, how about a comparison with a cheaper alternative. Would be interested to see you now drive a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Plenty about now sub 10 grand, and can offer pretty much what that Audi offers for a fraction of the price. Cheers, Jon.
Thats is a great idea. I know someone who might be able to help with that :-)
Hey PP, another great video. voice over volume was a bit low? Hard to hear you over the background music. Cabin voice levels were good. can you comment on the new model vs the old model? would you prefer the diesel for the extra torque? Thanks again.
Hi there. Thanks for the feedback on audio volume. Always a tricky balance. I’ve not driven the diesel SQ5 so can’t really comment. Although at least that one has real exhausts 😜
I need this car in my life
They are very good 👍
Hi Petrol Ped!!!! How funny to find you here - As you know, I bought the SQ7, but I actually started with this one. Here's what I thought.... The gearbox was possibly a touch better than the SQ7 - it just "knew" intuitively which gear to grab perfectly. Not saying the SQ7 is bad at all.... but this one's was sheer brilliance. However.... you dropped the hint at 10:01..... a teeny, weeny bit of turbo lag from a dead start in drive (my pet hate). In launch control, none of course but you just can't hide that little lag it has. Thats what did it for me and why I went SQ7. I didn't really need a car that big (but my Rhodesian Ridgeback and daughter will love it) - but the SQ7's electric supercharger and twin sequential turbo's just nails the dead starts quite a lot better. Not bagging it - I loved the SQ5.... Its just that the SQ7 did it better there and spoiled me. Cheers mate from Oz
Congrats on the new car 👏
Hey Petrol Ped, on a completely different topic to high performance Audi's, my mum has a Mazda 6 that I'm going to "hijack" on false pretenses and "swap for an Audi". A4 is plenty big enough and front wheel drive is fine too (she's 76 and not at all a racetrack warrior). I'll be looking for max features (ie creature comforts) but cringe a little at the 1.4L standard engine??? (maybe unjustified?). What do you know about the "little engined A4's - ie 1.4 or 2L... or anything else suitable? - as usual, turbo lag will be my pet hate). I don't want to have to chuck in more than $30k and the Mazda is around $18k - so my budget is $48k. Any suggestions for Grandma's new ride? haha
Having just ordered a factory build SQ7 coming out of VW Touareg I have struggled to find as great a car with 7 seats, ISOFIX and tow 3.5t. Discovery to rolly in corners. Q7, XC90 and X5 all had their compromises, lack of passenger space in X5 and Volvo and Q7 only tows 2.7T. Having seen your review I am more than excited for the 1st June when it should hopefully be in the UK and registered for me to drive off.
The SQ7 is an awesome bit of kit...and hugely fast :-)
Love the Sq5. Would not pay 65K for it though as tested or would I swap it for my 2015 RS3 which was a lot cheaper new. Great daily though and enjoyable review!!!!!
It was good but I'd rather have an S4 or I was actually looking at used RS3s today and you could get a corker for £40k and buy a nice Caterham as well !!!
Yeah 40K will buy a very nice low mileage 8V Rs3. I have been looking at the new facelift version Rs3 which is now available to order. More power and toys but can't justify the cost to upgrade. Going to hang on for a bit!!!The facelift like the TtRs have had the exhaust note turned down a bit!!!!!
You should review the RS, AMG or M range! It would be nice to see something such as the E63s or the RS6!
I've reviewed and RS6
czcams.com/video/UzuPQcTNA1M/video.html
I certainly do need to get another AMG on the channel !
Another great review, I also like the t-shirt! 👍
David Swanson Cheers David. Maybe I should start a line in PP merch 😂
same price as a Range Rover Sport 3.0 HSE ? I think not !
You got launch control on that
Great Review as you say it's up against a lot in its Class . On another note is there any tree trimming footage from the drone crash Cheers Tony👍👍🏁
1BLUEMEANIE Sadly for you and thankfully for me...NO 😂 Didn't have the cameras turned on !
Hi Petrol Ped... Thanks a lot for this interesting review! I have just ordered my SQ5 ;) I am just still hesitating about the color... would you maybe remember if the one on your video was in Daytona grey? It looks really nice...
Not sure to be honest but I think there is a good chance it is.
Thanks for your enthusiastic review. Fair-minded and makes me want to see you test competitors. Living in cold winter New England USA, do you know if Audi will ever go remote start?
Hi Gregory. I'm not sure of the details of the Audi Winter Pack, I had that on my Range Rover and it was brilliant on a cold day. Have a look at my channel as I have reviewed most of this cars rivals (Porsche Macan, RR Velar and Jaguar F Pace).
Great review. I’m after the diesel version of the SQ5. Have you driven the diesel version?
I'm afraid not, but if it's anywhere near as good as the diesel SQ7 then it great :-)
Great video..! Farty noise lol. Keep up the excellent work!
You can’t beat the farty noise 👍
Hey nice video, I enjoyed it. I have to question you though on the type of Quattro system the SQ5 runs, in the video you said it was an on demand Quattro Ultra style system where I believe it to be a full time Torsen style Quattro system with optional sport differential, by all means correct me if I have this wrong.
It's interesting the pricing and specifications between different markets, here in New Zealand the SQ5's come almost fully loaded as standard and you can only spend somewhere between $12-15k in options (mainly wheels, sport diff and B&O sound be the big ticket items) with a starting price of NZ$122k I think, pretty close anyway, they're pretty line ball with the competition on price naturally. When they first hit the market I though right, $122k but by the time they're optioned fully it'll be up around $160-170k but no.. the S4's price and spec set up as also very similar, the difference being here the cars initial price is comparatively much higher than Europe or the U.K (along with is main competitors) but it always has been.
Anyway fella, keep up the good work.
As I said to one of the other similar comments. I was going on information I got from two Audi guys before and after the drive. I am going to check to see if they were wrong. Really interesting to here about the pricing in New Zealand. It does come fully loaded in the UK but there are still some juicy options for the buyer to choose !
Petrol Ped Just FYI, I got confirmation that the Quattro system is a full time torsen system (with the option of a sport differential) as opposed to the ultra system which decouples the rear wheels so basically the exact same drivetrain as the S4/S5
you can have better 0-60 time if you use lanch control...it is 5.1 sec
My 2018 Q5 will be evolve into this one in due course....
Highly recommended :-)
Great review & a lovely car.. But 65K and you only get fake exhaust outlets? I completely agree with you on the price of the current Audi range; getting a bit ridiculous, I'm guessing they need to generate some extra income after the Dieselgate fiasco :)
Pete what cameras do you use for your videos? Also is the T-shirt that you are wear in the video available to buy?
Thanks Francois
Canon 750D DSLR for the selfie intro, iPhone 7 on a DJI Osmo Mobile Gimbal and the in-car cameras are Sony Action Cams shooting in 1080HD
Petrol Ped Thanks
T-shirts not for sale just yet but maybe in the near future :-)
Great video really like your reviews , I think these new sq5's are great (apart from the fake exhaust!) but just seen your sq7 review would you save the extra pennies for one of those or is the sq5 a better option as a daily ?
The SQ7 is a stunning car and for me more impressive. To be honest, I'm not sure I could get over the fake exhausts on the SQ5. I really don't like them !
Thanks for the reply
I will need to fully watch. I quite like my SQ5. What is the mpg with petrol?
Hi there Buddy. Between 20-25 mpg on the test but I was given it the beans quite a lot !
I love those plastic shift paddles. Metal ones always lead to electrostatic discharge potentially damaging the electronics. They also cut the price a lot.
Also the tailpipes are nice and you can paint them with glow in the dark paint.
And is the tablet holder a genuine audi accessory?
Yep hate the fake exhaust and hidden exits. The exterior let's it down for me. Interior they always nail it. £65k nah! Good review!
I've yet to meet anyone who like the exhausts. What are Audi thinking ?!
Love your content I love all car but I also love mechanical watches what watch are you modeling..........
Thanks...I love my watches too ! It is a Breitling Colt Chronograph :-)
Ped, I could be wrong, but I was led to believe the Quattro set up on the SQ5 is slightly different then the Q5 (can’t remember the terminology for it) but I have seen videos where the Quattro is described as rear biased for a sportier feel (60/40 rear biased).
It’s called Quattro on Demand I believe 👍
Do we have any details of the promised diesel?
I have a 2015 S4 and I was thinking about replacing it with the SQ5 since it has more space. Do you think I would miss the performance of the S4 or is the SQ5 still quick enough.
The SQ5 is certainly a quick car, I am not sure how much more space it has. It's not quite as quick as your B8 S4 and I have the new B9 and that is even quicker still. We don't need the space that often so bought a roof box :-)
£65k That's a bargain ;) In the Netherlands you pay about £110k full spec.
Really ?! Wow !
Yep. Tax on tax on tax.
You got your normal tax.
A car tax. Which you also have to pay when buying a used car outside of the country.
And a emission tax. The more horses, the more you pay basicly.
Remember a couple years ago a little comparison was done with a mustang gt500.
For one here you could almost get 3 in the usa.
Really great car but how much!! Glad you picked up on the fake exhaust exits they really are becoming a pet hate of mine.
A lot of money !!! The exhausts just look RUBBISH !
Not sure how accurate this review is Its an all-new platform rather than a face lift, and I'm pretty sure is has 365 PS. Also, Drive Select is standard on the SQ5.
Personally I preferred it as a diesel but I guess they're trying to take on the Petrol engined macan, X4, X3 etc. It's a pretty impressive machine overall but I'm not feeling the gas guzzling petrol engined SUV/SAV market. As much as the manufacturers give the vehicles better body control and sporty performance they aren't saloons or sports cars. I guess though, if you need a family sized car but can't afford a proper sports car too then this is a solution for many.
I know what you mean. I'd rather have a saloon or estate type car, but if you have a family and need a bit more space these certainly tick the box :-)
stubones would love to compare to my SQ5 Diesel. Will try sort a review
stubones Audi are replacing this petrol SQ5 with a new diesel version later this year (info from Auto Express)
Subbed
Which color grey is this?
IVe seen several videos about the SQ5 and many of their reviewers say that is should have been louder. Did you guys realise that the car comes from stock with acoustic windows? Check the exterior videos and the car crackles and delivers an amazing sound.
It's just a shame the exhaust looks so awful !
Yeah but its a matter of taste. Ive got an a45 amg and got fake exhausts. Not so evident but I think they look nice. By the way, very nice video review. Im looking to change my MB for a SUV and Im between the GLC43 (Love the back) , SQ5 (love everything, has more equipment) and Jaguar F-PACE (cheaper, havent research about it), do you have any advice? Thank you!
Facelift? Single clutch?
Felt so sleepy after this review
Bailey I'm in a coma after reading your replies.
surprised its slower than an SQ7 to 60mph. Definitely its baby brother.
It's not got as much grunt and the SQ7 had Launch Control !
Petrol Ped I just picked up my SQ7 it's damn quick without the launch control 😁
Nice Car but £65k wow 😮
Yep, a lot of money !
Again good review.....but what did i see there behind......fake exhausts OMG😱😱😱😱😱
I know...nightmare 😳
Hej petrol ped I'm from Denmark in Denmark we use the term horsepower you are using p.s How does that Translate to horsepower👍
PS (pferdestarke) is ‘Metric Horsepower’ and quite a few manufacturers quote their cars power output in PS. 1 PS = 0.98 Horsepower
So very similar 😜
Petrol Ped
👍😎
song at 10:50? :)
How is the rear legroom and boot space?
Pretty good 👍
@@PetrolPed As good as the Lexus RX? I am short listing the SQ5 the SQ7 and the Lexus RX 350F, I realise the SQ7 is a much bigger car but I cannot get past your review of it what a car... but then I watched your review of the SQ5 and that looks cool as well, thanks for the reply all the best Rob.
Just to be correct; it's not Quattro on Demand 😀
It was told that by Audi before I took the car out :-0
Incorrect!!!! The ultimate sports version of this car is actually the RSQ5! Thank you #Facts
+Adam_lux RS Q5 NOT launched yet ! Thank You #Facts 😜
Great review, positive without being too anal...........love the car...
Cheers Simon :-)
If you get the diesel they're Euro 5. That's why I went for a euro 6 Macan instead.
Hi could you give me an idea of the really average mpg for the petrol sq5 ? Read two different answers to it , one really bad and one not to bad lol ,
I filmed this a couple of year ago and honestly can't remember the details. Sorry. I don't remember it being awful !
@@PetrolPed cheers pp lol that will do for me , keep up the great work
The only reason you're always positive about the cars is because if you say anything negative about them you may not be allowed to review other cars!
In the early days there is bound to e a bit of that. However, I am not afraid of saying it how it is. I gave the Rolls Royce Wraith a hard time and Rolls Royce have still invited me to several events since :-)
ohhhhhh big deal, my grandfather is long time customer of Rolls Royce, so i think your very much irrelevant to them LOL
minicooperfan social reach for a company is more important than a single customer unless that person is well known
a channel like this will generate no sales to a company as big as Rolls Royce..and they appreciate his custom over the years more than a shit youtube channel
minicooperfan I take your point but why would they allow him to be involved with the brand. I don't do this type of content but I need to do a lot of work to film with a racing team and I need to offer value to them and I would expect the same is true for this
Please: anyone, pano roof in summer with only a blind, no shut off cover like my Kuga,?
I was having a poo while watching this.
Sorry you Brits have to pay so much in taxes. I just recently took delivery of my 2018 SQ5. After placing the order on April 5th, I was promised delivery by June, early July. I was delayed until about Aug 18th. I finally told my dealer to cancel the sale because I found one at another dealer.
Long story short, I got the car for $1500 below dealer invoice! Worked out I got mine for about 43,000GP. Lucky Yank!
Wow...that is a good price :-)
What color is this..
Sorry, I'm not sure as it was a while ago since I filmed it :-(
Petrol Ped .. Oh, ok.. They have 2 greys of that tone..
E Springer looks like Manhattan grey. The other grey is monsoon grey.
E Springer Daytona grey
Bing bong
Oh...take one of those back - it's petrol
+RolexKings RolexKings 😜👍
No permanent quattro? I thought front wheel drive biased (Haldex) was limited to transverse mounted engined cars. Larger cars getting 'proper' quattro.
Marc Schofield I think you'll find he made a wee mistake here, I believe it has full time Torsen Quattro but the less powerful 2 litre four cylinder versions have what's called Quattro Ultra which is an on demand system but more proactive rather that reactive like Haldex systems.
I am going on the briefing I got from two Audi guys before and after the drive. They told me this new SQ5 had Quattro on demand and showed me data about it. There a four type of Quattro...m.audi.co.uk/innovation/quattro/different-types-of-quattro.html
Petrol Ped That link only lists the A4 Allroad as on demand but it's been widely reported that more than just the A4 Allroad has Quattro Ultra now, I sincerely thought I has heard on several occasions that the "S" and SQ" models on the MLB platform would get permanent Quattro, sorry mate.
Only going on what I was told by a guy from Audi that had gone on the training for this model !!
Petrol Ped Yeah understood, I was just pointing out that the link was out of date with the very latest models from Audi, that's all. No argument here.
£65? Ridiculous. When you could pick up a Macan GTS for £58K. Yes you need to spend on options with the Porsche, but even the base GTS with no options is superior to this.
I know where you are coming from. Audi's pricing at the moment seems pretty steep and even though I am a huge Audi fan I would rather have a Macan GTS too ;-)
Hello
First again :-)
Petrol Ped oh haha
Pitril Pid u iz mayd et rewewin carz. plz repli 2 mi i iz bayg fayn. I injoy ur vork. it mik mi vely eppy ya zi mi.
The fake exhausts on these new SQ5s is an instant put off...oh and it's diesel. Great review.....
no, its not. but its a good car.
We own a previous gen SQ5 and honestly, I am not a fan of the new body style. The new engine, too, seems bit of a downgrade. The 3.0 liter supercharged engine is just fantastic. Ours has an APR tune and slight supercharger pulley swap and makes 0-60mph in around 4.0 seconds - a good bit better than this tester.
And let's talk price - if we paid here in the USA the same 25% tariff that US cars are charged in Germany, this car would make no sense whatsoever. The Audi cars are arguably worth the price, but I don't see it being sustainable over time on a fair global import tax playing field.
And the "farty sound" exhaust and the fake exhaust tips? That's kinda the final straw for me. Oh - don't forget you can also select fake engine noise too (in fact you can hear it in the reviewer's video during hard acceleration in dynamic mode).
While a fantastic car, and our Audi has a wonderful interior - I can't quite get behind buying a new one. We will keep our current Audi for a few more years as it is a great car. And service at our local Audi dealer is top notch! But would I pay a price of $80+ USA for one? (The $65 base plus import tariffs) - no way.
Fake exhaust tips are a show stopper for me 😥
YAWNNNNNNNN
Tiredness kills. Don't do BORING reviews
Jaguar F-Pace SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 will eat this alive when it's released.
I have already been offered access to that car when my local dealer gets their demonstrator. Stay tuned and I have a feeling you are right !
Blackmagicvrs As it should the price of entry but a SVR is not the SUV that would go head to head with the SQ5, that would be a RSQ5 which is possible but I haven't heard anybody confirm it as yet though.
The 2016 SQ5 looks better.
Certainly from the rear :-)
The interior looks a lot like a 1995 transit
😂😂😂
65k I would buy bmw x3 M40i!!! Re sell is better than this.
Vote Trump
You are aware the all new Audi Q5 is made in Mexico correct? Even the SQ5 model. Nothing wrong with Mexican built vehicles but if i had to spend well over $70,000 USD for a vehicle it better be built in Germany by Germans!

Not a bad review, however in the U.S., "Ped" is unfortunately a slang abbreviation for "pedophile".
+raikkonengti I gather that is the case, even though it is spelt paedophile ! I my case it's short for Pedro 😎
+raikkonengti Glad you enjoyed the review though 👍
As stated correctly, "Ped" is a slang abbreviation
for Pedophile, which is spelled "P-E-D" in the U.S. - semantics perhaps,
much like the past tense of “spell”; which in Britain (as you’ve highlighted) is “spelt” and in in the U.S., “spelled”…
I did enjoy the review.
Too late to change my name now. I just hope people realise I am not one !
Pete why do you not mention anything about those ugly fake exhaust? Did Audi promise you something to keep quiet?
You clearly didn't watch all of the video because I do ;-)
Felt so sleepy after this review
