Cowpea is the number one food legume in Nigeria, out of our about 200 million Nigerians, nearly almost everyone consumes cowpea in one form or the other therefore it remains one of our critical energy source, and also for being protein rich.
However, production of this crop has been hugely affected by Maruca pest. The introduction of Bt cowpea has breathed new life to the cowpea sector since farmer's can now produce more and apply less pesticides as the country eyes to get back the export market crippled by high level of pesticides.
