      Practically everything we eat releases insulin; however, complex carbohydrates takes much longer to cause an insulin release than simple carbohydrates.
      This is because complex carbohydrates are low glycemic carbs, and take longer for the body to break down and digest.

    Always love, love, love Dr. Mills. He really is good at explaining why Whole Foods are the means of creating good health. We’ve been eating this way and have found that the meals now actually leave you full and satisfied. This satisfaction extends to when you are due for your next meal so you can still not be nibbling all while one is cooking to get the meal prepared. Here’s the thing, everyone thinks it is going to be hard to do, and tasteless. On the contrary, combining different plant foods together in one meal plays really well between the various textures and flavors. It is absolutely delicious.
    My husband made the change after I’d been eating this way several years and he enjoys it so much he is glad to sit down at the meals I prepare and he never ceases during the meal to tell me how delicious it all is. It is also beautiful to look at as the color of steamed vegetables is gorgeous.
    He’s got energy to beat the band. He is 70 years old now and has more get up and go, than when he was 20 years younger. And our minds are sharp, he goes over to troubleshoot electrical problems for our son who had the electrician from hell. He explains as he goes so our son is learning how to diagnose continuity in even 220 circuits safely and how to make the most of his multimeter. They get along great. When he comes home, he is not exhausted. Clearly his digestion is as suited to this diet as is mine. He looks younger than when he began this as when we eat wrong, it over-burdens the organs which detox up like the liver and the kidneys and even the skin, trying to dump toxins through the pores even. This does not happen to either of us. Body odor is at a minimum. We do not smell bad, no longer need deodorants but of course we shower or bathe with soap. I am not consuming much in the way of fats or oils but what I am having, my skin is healthier, not itchy, all my blackheads I had for 60 years are even gone no matter if they were on my face or my back.
    Cooking is fun and I am not tired after I make a meal, we eat our big meal at lunch and very light in the evening. I can be in there on my feet for 1-1/2 hours prepping and then a half an hour clean up and don’t feel exhausted afterwards. This was not the case when we ate meat, for either of us. And when I started this, the way I was eating had me in a wheelchair with arthritis pain, pain which I can remember but no longer live with.
    It is never to late to make a change. My husband had prostate cancer 5 years ago, the ones he worked with who were also ready to retire, there were three who also had it, (it is now as common for men to get this kind of cancer), but my husband had a great surgeon who recommended surgery as the other option was chemo and radiation. The other three men all are dead now but my husband’s cancer was worse, they did not have stage 4, like he did. The WFPB diet helps one to recover from not only obesity and arthritis but asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, brain fog, and it is the best at stopping angiogenesis which is when the body fails to stop cancer and actually builds a blood supply for it. So the WFPB diet starves the cancer and even though a surgeon can do a good job, the cells can even so, get in your blood and transport through the body to make new cancers. This is a common problem.
    The emotional factor of feeling better is just a feeling of well-being and happiness. We sleep better, and one is never constipated at all.
    I ask my husband sometimes if he is getting tired of eating this way, and he always tells me “no, I never want to go back, even if something happened and you passed away, God forbid, I would not go back to my former eating habits.” Really I am amazed.
    It is much easier doing it together. He also knows how much I suffered before changing my diet and all that I can do now pain-free, is amazing. No one tells themselves, “hey, what a good day to use my wheelchair”. It is a pain in the butt to tell the truth, when you don’t have to reach even for a cane, who would?

    • @mchooksis
      @mchooksis Pƙed 5 lety +16

      Depends how you look at it. They are all saccherides, some simple, some complex. but all made up of the same basic elements of carbon hydrogen and oxygen. But after digestion they all end up as the same simple sugars in our bodies to be oxidised for energy release, or stored away if here is more than is needed. When there is too much stored, that is when the damage starts.

    • @kingwillie206
      @kingwillie206 Pƙed 5 lety +14

      mchooksis - I love the scientific specifics, however, in the context of diet they are different. I doubt it would matter if we were on an ancient diet and ate plain white potatoes vs sweet potatoes, but we aren’t and potato chips/french fries vs sweet potatoes are not the same, nor is cake the same as brown rice.

    • @mchooksis
      @mchooksis Pƙed 5 lety +5

      @@kingwillie206 Thanks King Willie, I agree, they are very different when it comes to what we eat, but my point was that by the time they are broken down by digestion, they are the same. Chips and cake are quite different because they contain added sugar and fats as well. Cake in particular contains simple sugars which will go straight into the blood giving a sugar/energy hit. Which means that by the time the complex carbs in the cake flour are digested into simple sugars, the body will say . Hey we don't need any more sugar right now, we had better store it somewhere.

      The problem is in generalising. You feel good on vegan, I felt awful. No energy, always cold. I managed to be on vegan diet for 6 months and I will alway remember the time I ate fish and started to feel warm. I will never ever come back to vegan diet due to lack of proteins. And no, beans never made me warm, but only bloated. I don't know how people can manage on veganism. Also I was controlling cholesterol through different diets I was doing and I had perfect blood test results on low carb high fat and protein diet (I excluded grains, starch and highly fibrous vegies and was eating fried meat 3x a day). When I started include carbs (rice, gluten free bread) I gained weight very quickly and my cholesterol went up. Also I started to be hungry all the time. I really have enough lies about how we should eat vegan, meat is bad and full grains and beans are good. If you enjoy vegan - continue. But don't force all people for going vegan and don't spread lies that this is the best diet ever. To be honest I don't know which diet is the best so anybody who has issues with digestion, like me, should do elimination diet and that is what I am doing. And yes, beef meat is hard to digest for me personally, but sheep is the best meat ever for me. Plus chicken, plus fish and lard from pig. But different people can have different outcome. And yes, eating pig fat does not raise my cholesterol. But rice and bread do.

      That's why it's better to mix carbs with veggies. I make a Mexican style lasagna that is 350 calories per pound which means I can eat the whole tray and still have eaten less than 2000 calories. All my meals are designed that way. I make chili, hash brown casserole, stir fry, tacos, frittatas, pastas, loaded baked potatoes etc. It's better to think of it as a high fiber diet than a high carb diet, although relatively speaking it's still high carb because it's generally 10 percent calories from protein and 10 to 15 percent fat. The rest of the calories are carbs. When you eat high fiber, you get to eat a LOT. LOL (I lost 70 pounds so far. I'm at a normal BMI but because I'm a little older and less active, I still have a little extra very stubborn weight).

Whats the common factor? All these people stop eating processed shit and putting crap in there body and i think this is the main reason they become more healthy. We are all different do what works for you. If you want to be vegan then go for it, just see that you get enough vitamins and minerals and don't judge other people who do not share your views. not everyone can survive on a vegan diet, some people are even forced to stop after years of being vegan. If you want to go on some other diet then that is fine too. Do what works for you! Me i try to eat meat once a week and it works for me.

    This is due to him being in a terrible car accident which nearly crippled him & damaged his spine, he cannot excersise because of it, hence him appearing slightly overweight.
    He also barely ever has to take pain killers for a partially collapsed spine, he attributes that to the plant based diet he is on, because it is very low in inflammation.

      Absolutely! We modern humans are not earning our calories like we once did. We are not fasting/starving until we get off our asses and hunt for one, two, three days or more until we can eat a decent meal, or cultivating crops 20 hours a day to survive, etc. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to cut carbohydrates, otherwise the excess energy will be stored as fat. Calories in, calories out, and carbs have a lot more calories per spoonful than protein derived from meats and vegetables.

    This is why the keto diet uses NET CARBS. It sort of forces you to eat high quality vegetables and fruits that are very high in fiber resulting in a low net carb total.
    I personally feel better with more carbs than the keto diet requires but keto if done correctly is a good way to train yourself how to eat healthier even if you don’t plan to stay in ketosis.
    Highly processed meats, grains and sugars need to be avoided for optimal health, period. While whole grains may carry more micronutrients that can be beneficial for your health, the human body has a lot of difficulty extracting them so you end up only slightly better off than eating refined grains.
    This was obviously a biased opinion that supports this channel’s view. Plant based diets are not superior to well balanced diets and there are no well designed studies that suggest as much.

    I like this video...For once I really understand the difference in a meaningful way...I can apply it better in my life...I was instructed to eat as little carbs as possible while eating as much vegetables and lean protein and fish I want...I was focused on the carbs so much that I was refusing to eat any which I now know is starving my brain...The vegetables are my lifeline so I will be more mindful of my choices there to get the most out of them...cutting my love affair with sweets is the best thing I did for myself so now my new meal goals are complete...Thanks to both of you...To those who mock the Dr. you may want to reflect on why you felt triggered enough to allow your baser instinct to come out and attack him...He just provided information he didn't set out to attack you personally because he doesn't know you personally...Neither do you know him personally...If you disagree just move along...there's nothing for here...

    I love this. Whole foods is the way to go! Well said and easily understood! I didnt pick up weight until after i ate lots of processed crap. In addition, i developed migraines. Its important for people to KNOW THEIR OWN BODIES. What works for one may not work for others. There is no one size fits all. Keto did not work for me. And yes i did it correctly. It wasnt until "I" increased my carbohydrates in "MY" diet that i then lost 1lb a day for 6 days straight. I felt better. I have a friend that did great on keto , but it wasnt for me. Im so glad i can think for myself and have the ability to listen to "MY" own body. To each their own. Loved this interview!!!!

    I’m a low carb convert, but I don’t think this off the cuff presentation covers the issues properly. I went low carb for twenty years, off and more often off, than on. But I did have success with bloods when I was following the diet. My sugars were lower and my cholesterol both were lower and my triglycerides lower. What i didn’t realise was that even with low cholesterol readings my arteries could be clogged up. I never did any tests to confirm that I have to say, but apparently there are many tests which prove this.
    For just one month I’ve been eating a whole food plant based diet which is primarily carb based. I’ve eaten more potatoes, white, sweet purple, in three weeks than I’ve eaten in 20yrs. My blood sugars are down. My blood pressure hasn’t changed, yet, waiting to get cholesterol results in a couple of months. I’m diabetic and have been taking pills for over ten years. What I’ve learned is that doctors have zero nutritional training, diddly squat and the best they can ever do is tell you to loose weight. But they are clueless about how to do it. None of them understand that the diabetic problem can’t be sorted with pills and insulin, so they forget the pills and insulin only treat the symptoms, not the cause. Using diet to treat the cause helps to reverse diabetes. Low carb diets don’t reverse diabetes, pills and insulin don’t reverse diabetes, they just stop the blood sugars rising sometimes and if you’re lucky might even lower blood sugar levels but not for ever, whole food plant based diets do reverse diabetes. Do lower blood sugar levels.
    Dr Mills is clever does understand but I’m wondering if he doesn’t practise what he preaches, he’s chubby isn’t he!

    This seems more about herbivores vs carnivores than it does about low carb vs high carb. I've eaten both low carb ketogenic and high carb vegan. Both had their advantages and disadvantages. But when we come down to it, we are omnivores designed to eat a variety of different foods from all regions of this planet. Some regions eat more plants and some regions eat more meat. None of these diets were an issue until we started allowing hydrogenated vegetable oils, refined sugar and factory farming to our tables. Processed foods are killing us, that seems to be the only reliable science we can all agree on. So lets just simmer down and take a deep breathe. Talking about food has become the new religion and politics.

      yet..We do have the readily accessible ability to breakdown cholesterol which is what animals use for their cell membranes. So eating animal organs gives us incredibly rich and easy access to nutrients that the animal with the enzyme was eating and able to absorb.

      I'm assuming you did some form of carb cycling or reintroduced them after keto because to be in ketosis you have to eat under 50g carbs daily, preferably under 20g. Anything above 30g-50g will be low carb but not keto for most people.

      @@mikeg8276 actually I combined my keto which was below 20g. And intermittent fasting. Occasionally I'd give myself a 3-4 day break and then go back into the below 20g for about two weeks, but when I did eat excess carbs I made sure it was the good stuff...

      Health Man. Yes. Eat less "mushy" vegetables. Soft on the outside and "al dente" on the inside. Also, eat the "skin" of vegetable and fruits most of the nutrients are close to the outer skin. Exception, apples, they can cause irritable bowel syndrome. Eat them cooked. Cooking increases the digestibility of most foods. You will learn which foods and preparation methods suit your DNA.

    I just proved most of what he said in this video. We had to evacuate for the hurricane and were lucky enough to find a studio apt out of state with an apartment sized kitchen. So, I grabbed the food from our home fridge/freezer and loaded coolers to bring with us so that I didn't have to throw it all out. When we got here, I started cooking up all of the veggies and made soup or salads almost daily. Towards the end, we were running out of food and so I didn't want to go and buy more food that we would have to take back with us in case we didn't have electricity when we got back. So we had to resort to restaurants and fast food which we normally don't consume. I felt healthy for the first part of the week. When we had to switch to restaurants/fast foods, well....we are leaving tomorrow and I am not feeling that great. We still have another night stopover on the road and I am concerned about how I will feel once I am at home. If we don't have electricity and the grocery stores are empty, we will have to resort to canned goods and some of my dehydrated veggies. I am so glad that I dehydrated some food as it will come in handy and it is pure food without additives. One more thing is that I found that I was feeling weird and took my BP only to find that it had gone up after eating out so much. Our bodies are not used to consuming so much salt. I use a lot of herbs in place of salt. All of the restaurant salty food has played havoc on me. So....this man speaks the truth.

    I need to ask a question, but in order to so I must be gross and personal. I have been on the starch based diet for 6 days. I am completely miserable in my stomach. I feel naucious when I think of food and when I do eat I feel gassy to the point of pain. My intestines are violently cramping and my stools are like mashed potatoes from hell. I wake up in pain at 3am and literally fill the toilet for an hour. This can't be normal right? I have lost a significant amount of weight though. 10 pounds in the last 6 days. But this stomach pain and gassiness is miserable.

Ketone bodies are secondary and not giving much energy as glucose. The right way is a diet with moderate whole grains consumption, little fats and a lot of vegetables. The Dr is absolutely right. Btw there are medical studies demonstrating high mortality in people doing keto low carbs diet.

    This Dr. isn't wrong on how many people in the U.S. turn to refined over whole carbs for fuel. But the brain does not always need glycogen (a by-product of carbs). In fact, for folks with epilepsy, doctors will almost always suggest the patient adopts a Ketogenic Diet (Low Carb, Moderate Protein, High fat).
    Instead of worrying over which diet is best, or which macronutrient is most essential. Research suggests that anyone adopting a keto, paleo, vegan, or no regimen would benefit from eating Whole nutrition Foods (fruits, vegetables, organic grass-fed meats, low/no mercury fish, etc). Furthermore, fat loss requires more than just a diet. Controlling hormones through exercise, sleep, engaging in activities that produce (FLOW - the scientific term for being in-the-zone, happy, fully-engaged and immersed in a task for a period of time), and more
