  • Today, we are going to talk about a Judo grandmaster who was fortunate enough to meet Bruce Lee in 1959 and was impressed by Bruce Lee’s martial arts style at that time. Remember this, Bruce Lee hadn’t founded Jeet Kune Do in 1959; he was still practicing Wing Chun and Tai Chi at the age of 18. The Judo master who met Bruce Lee is Taky Kimura.

Taky, Kimura went into the Japanese internment camps one day before he turned 18 and didn’t get out until he was about 36 years old. He practiced judo in the concentration camp. Most people don’t know that 2/3 of the Japanese were American citizens.

The McCarthy era stands as the darkest period in recent memory, so many innocent people suffered horribly as McCarthy capitalised on national paranoia by proclaiming that communist spies were everywhere and that he was America's only salvation. History repeated itself. I worry about 2024.

Taky Kimura has never been a judo grandmaster. In this interview he says that he has only been in judo for a short time. He was certainly trained in Bruce Lee's way of fighting and later mastered Jeet Kundo.

@@teedtad2534Lee took private lessons from Wally Jay, who was one of Lee’s instructors. According to my friend Leon Jay, Wally’s son and successor as Grand Master of Small Circle Jujitsu, who was there for Bruce’s training with his father, Lee never did any live training with his father. He worked on learning basic techniques and concepts, but never did any sparring or randori/rolling. That’s from the people who were actually there and not the fairytales of the Bruceploitation con artists.
Lee also made comparisons between how the circular theory in SCJJ was to his one inch punch. Professor Jay also founded Small Circle Judo and was one of the top Judo Coaches on the West Coast back in the day. As far as rank is concerned, which many of Lee’s fans like to bring up, apparently because they think that adds to Lee’s credibility, most of the guys that Lee trained with weren’t high ranking at the time Lee was around.
When Vic Moore had the rigged “speed test” with Lee, he was very far from being a tenth dan. He is now, but he sure wasn’t then. Wong Jack-man might have been considered a Grand Master before he died, but he was a 23 year old waiter at a Chinese restaurant who moonlighted by teaching Traditional Chinese Martial Arts at a recreation center in San Francisco when he and Bruce had their match. Nor was he some ringer or enforcer brought over from China to fight Lee for teaching all races as the fairytales go.
Grand Master ranks of eighth dan and above in the systems that use the Kyu/Dan ranking system, traditionally required at least 39 years of continuous training according to the guidelines set by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Those were adopted by the Okinawans in ‘36, the Koreans in ‘55 and the Chinese in ‘98. Though each made their own small variations. For example, the Chinese set Grand Master ranks at 7th-9th Duan. Heck, I am scheduled to test for tenth dan the last week of June 2024. I was nowhere near my best back when I was a 2nd or 3rd dan.
I am a fan of Lee’s, but of the real man. There is so much fiction and myths surrounding him from con artists that purposely create fake stories that some facts need to be brought into the conversation.

You hear the respect, which is usually lacking in this arena, say with Chuck Norris telling how he taught Bruce Lee things and other "famous" folks standing on Bruce Lee's shoulders and criticizing him, like Segal. This Artist recognizes the affect Bruce Lee had on saving his life and helping him grow as a person and a martial artist.

It's ironic that Bruce would find a true friend in Taky since from a young age Bruce had disdain for the Japanese occupation of China back in the day. Taky remained loyal till the end.
