  • As promised, here is a Christmas gift for all my fellow Rageaholics, wherein the most overhyped, irrationally extolled slice of digital entertainment in recent memory takes an arrow to the knee. Without further delay, let us delve into the successes and - for once - the failures of a game that, despite having only been released two weeks prior, was nevertheless called game of the year.

      Skyrim was my first elder scrolls game I enjoyed its a good starting point for the series for a new comer like me but seeing what came before I'm kind of let down as this game had so much potential if it was more like its ancestors.

      chiip90 Nearly every facet of play, including dialogue options, world reactivity, the journal system, magic, melee combat, controls, the UI, enemy variety and questing has significant flaws or is completely broken. I stand by my opinion, this game is an abhorrent piece of shit, and its only redeemable quality is serving as groundwork for some really great modders.

    As much as I like Skyrim, the thing I miss most was the bonus to skills when choosing a class. You get the small race bonus to certain skills, and it's not like the game is imbalanced, but it does kinda take a dump on noncombat skills particularly. Especially in the case of enchanting.

    I was pissed that the acrobat skill was nowhere to be found. Slowly being able to jump higher and run faster was an awesome part of previous TES games. I still had the tendency to jump around Skyrim like Mario on meth, but it not granting me level ups over time was somewhat of a drag. And having no immediate alchemy perks sucked...but I liked the fact that smithing and alchemy are now stationary. Who the fuck carries around all that glass and is still able to sneak around? Just saying.

      merkabah47 I'm pissed at how they removed essentially EVERY skill that actually mattered; or at least dumbed it down to the point that it's half as fun. I mean come on! They took acrobatics and athletics out, then they finished the stupidity they started in Oblivion by dumbing down the weapon skill system; in morrowind you have Long Blade, Short Blade, Axe, Blunt, Marksman etc.. and for some reason in Oblivion they figured "oh it doesn't matter, as long as you've had practice with a tiny dagger you can EASILY kill hordes of demons with a Claymore even though you've never used one before!" and turned Long Blade and Short Blade into "Blade" Then did the same thinking "If you can swing dat der Woodcutting Axe then you'll be JUST FINE with a Daedric Warhammer!" and made Axe and Blunt into just "Blunt". Then they fucked up Marksmen by limiting to "Archery" and taking out the Throwing Knives, Darts, Shuriken etc.. which made it far less fun even though they improved the overall Archery combat with bows (less variety is a HUGE factor in limiting the fun of a game). Then in Skyrim they went even further by taking the system of Blade and Blunt and simply making it One Handed and Two Handed, so now having practice with a dagger not only makes you a master with Short Swords, Long Swords, and Greatswords but also with War Axes, Battle Axes, Maces, and Hammers...sigh -___-
      And don't even get me started on how they destroyed the magic system. In Morrowind with Conjuration you could summon
      Summon Ancestral Ghost | Summon Skeleton | Summon Lesser | Summon Bonewalker | Summon Greater Bonewalker | Summon Bonelord | Summon Scamp | Summon Clannfear | Summon Hunger | Summon Flame Atronach | Summon Frost Atronach | Summon Storm Atronach | Summon Dremora | Summon Daedroth | Summon Winged Twilight | Summon Golden Saint | Summon Dwarven Centurian Sphere | Bound Battle Axe | Bound Spear | Bound Dagger | Bound Longbow | Bound Longsword | Bound Mace | Bound Shield | Bound Boots | Bound Cuirass | Bound Gloves | Bound Helm | Command Creature | Command Human | Turn Undead
      In Oblivion you had a similarly long list (although lacks some of the best summons from Morrowind, but still far better than Skyrim)
      Summon Bear | Summon Skeleton | Summon Skeleton Champion | Summon Skeleton Guardian | Summon Skeleton Hero | Summon Ghost | Summon Ancestor Guardian | Summon Faided Wraith | Summon Gloom Wraith | Summon Lich | Summon Zombie | Summon Headless Zombie | Summon Scamp | Summon Flame Atronach | Summon Frost Atronach | Summon Storm Atronach | Summon Clannfear | Summon Daedroth | Summon Dremora | Summon Dremora Lord | Summon Spiderling | Summon Spider Daedra | Summon Xivilai | Bound Boots | Bound Dagger | Bound Gauntlets | Bound Helmet | Bound Greaves | Bound War Axe | Bound Bow | Bound Cuirass | Bound Mace | Bound Shield | Bound Sword | Rebuke Undead | Turn Undead | Repulse Undead | Dismiss Undead
      Then in the main game of Skyrim we're down to.....this
      Bound Dagger | Bound Sword | Bound Battleaxe | Bound Bow | Summon Familiar | Flaming Familiar | Summon Flame Atronach | Summon Frost Atronach | Summon Storm Atronach | Summon Dremora Lord | Raise Zombie | Reanimate Corpse | Revenant | Dread Zombie | Dead Thrall | Flame Thrall | Frost Thrall | Storm Thrall | Soul Trap | Banish Daedra | Expel Daedra | Command Daedra |
      That's 21 total conjuration spells in Skyrim vs 38 in Oblivion and 31 in Morrowind; and this doesn't count special summons etc.. from like DLC's which would tilt things even more in morrowind/oblivion's favor.

    While I do enjoy playing Skyrim I cannot deny that the game has so many removed and stream lined elements from the past games that it could almost not be called an Elder Scrolls game. The significant removal of skills, spells, armor, and so much more. Why did the attribute system need to die? Hell, why is it being removed in so many RPGs? The same goes for classes. If you did not like any of the classes that were in the past games you could just make your own...which I did...all the time. Not to mention the slow removal of the difference between the races. At this point it does not matter what race I play as because they all play the same. That is not to say it is a bad thing, but some races should make playing certain roles far easier than others. For example, Argonians were once immune to poison, had 75% resistance to disease, breath under water, and had proficiency in medium armor and spears (which would make a hell of a lot of sense since they are masters of guerrilla warfare), beast feet, and the inability to wear certain armors. Now, they have lost almost all of that except now a 50% resistance to disease and water breathing. Hell, with Skyrim they have no combat abilities which makes no sense since they were able to hold back Oblivion by themselves and conquer a good part of Morrowind. Their choices for the Argonians do not even make sense with the lore they themselves created. Other problems like the linearity of dungeons, stupidly easy puzzles, lack luster guilds and their story lines, and so much more. I could go one, but I am just going to stop at this point before I write another thesis (already had to do two of them for college). Honestly I just hope that one day I can make an Argonian Battlemage who wears medium armor and uses a spear, but with the way the series is going I am not going to hold my breath.

    Although I love the hell outta Skyrim, I agree with a lot of points here. Skyrim did many things better but also did many things worse. If they could just make a TES game the combined everything the past entries did right then they'd have something great.

      Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) : In hindsight, because this game aped so much of its design from Fallout 3, you have to wonder why didn't they leave in the Skill tagging system as well. Or use the Major/Minor skill tagging from past games.
      It's not a substitute for picking a class, but how quickly it was dropped with no substitute says something about Bethesda's design team.

  • @Heffy_Boi

    After playing through the majesty that is TES IV: Oblivion, I couldn't help but hold the series as a whole to an unreasonably high standard. Sure, Oblivion may not be the best in its long lineage of classic games but by god it was damn close wasn't it? I mean for one thing, it wasn't a bug-riddled mess and as far as I'm concerned, it also wasn't pushed out to retail too early, but I digress.
    So to my surprise, Skyrim didn't even hold a candle to its predecessor.
    Every time I tried to get into Skyrim, I never felt the same magic that Oblivion provided me. It's a shame considering that it had so much potential and it was all but squandered. I suppose you could blame the fact that I never watched ads for Oblivion before I played it to be the reason I enjoyed it more as a result. Whereas with Skyrim, it was advertised up the ass, hyping up consumers such as myself.

    Never played Daggerfall but I practically splooged all over oblivion. I played Skyrim trying to role play as a badass who kills things with his fists. Instead of being the action star Chuck Norris I was present day broken ass old Chucklefuck Norris. I mean come on not only do you gut hand-to-hand combat, but to add insult to injury you make one enchantment that helps and the Khajiit race special is just hand to hand damage. Not to mention the fact that top and bottom armor have congealed into the cuirass, thanks so as a khajiit I have become every cartoon animal ever. I never understood why I didn't have that much fun in the game till way later it is simple. It takes forever to do anything cool. I mean the faction/guild quests were great but took to long to get to. Do not even get me started on that regen health bull shit. Remember when health pots and spells were useful, NOT ANY MORE!!!

    I like Skyrim, I don't have an issue with the classes & I liked the idea of doing certain skills more to get better at them, and there *is* replayability. I played through the game once as kinda a mix of Warrior & Sage with a little bit of Alchemy throw in when I found so many ingredients to make potions. I created some other characters and I'm having fun playing as a Khajiit, who is better with Thief skills.
    I don't agree with other issues people keep bringing up like the whole streamline thing. So what if the game was made a little more easier for new gamers to get into, at least it wasn't too much change to the point that the game would've become unrecognizable(I'm looking at you, Resident Evil).

      ***** What did Skyrim remove? If its about the classes, how are they an issue in this game? Granted, I haven't played the past Elder Scrolls games, but don't we have tons of RPGs, where we can chose different classes, and level our characters' skills up from there? What's the issue in Skyrim?

    • @ThePandemic101
      @ThePandemic101 Před 10 lety +6

      TheGameKeeper94 In Skyrim, due to the lack of classes, you ALWAYS start out with default skills in everything. But let's say it has classes. I could choose to be a thief for example, and I would start out with boosts to all thief related skills (stealth, lockpick, pickpocket etc). But in Skyrim, second, third, fourth etc playthroughs quickly get boring because I start out as the same exact generic default character. The elder scrolls takes a lot of inspiration from it's parent games, most notably of these is Dungeons and Dragons. Removing classes is a slap in the face to D&D.

    • @Walt_Xander94
      @Walt_Xander94 Před 10 lety +1

      ***** Same default skills? Last I checked, depending on the race of the character, they have a different ability than the rest, are better at certain skills, or resistant to certain things. The Khajit is a better thief, the Argonan are resistant to diseases, can breathe underwater, and have the Histskin ability that regenerates health quicker, the Imperials are skilled in combat & magic, they can find more gold, and have an ability to calm enemies, Wood Elves are also good thieves, but are also good archers, they're resistant to poisons & diseases, and they the ability to command animals to fight for them, so on & so forth. I don't see that as a bad thing. If it is, just wait until the next Elder Scrolls game. I got a feeling if selecting classes was put back in, some people might complain that the game was too easy, or that it was too easy to level up skills because your character already has a boost in some of them.

    • @ThePandemic101
      @ThePandemic101 Před 10 lety +4

      SoulSc0rcher I agree too but that's the devs fault, the fact that we CAN fix the game is just that much more better. We need to have higher standards for games these days but people are content on buying the same crap every year as long as it has a new coat of paint, mostly console gamers. Not being a "PC elitist" but it's true. Since the gaming industry is mostly run by consoles (though that's false as PC sells more games) then the people who continue to buy broken, unfinished games are supporting bad business practices with their wallets.

      Maxiga Actually PC loses less games than the consoles do but it is still sad. Buying for games only is fine till you realize that if you just worry about the games you'll be buying every platform for $4-500 just for a game or two and people don't have that money nor is it worth it. You'd also be funding bad business practices with your wallet simply because you choose not to care about what system it's on, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run and wasting money.

    I actually like the class free system, its great for first timers who want to play the game however they want. I think it does nothing to take away from replay value as you can play however (limiting) you want your second time across. The opening is tedious and I found myself having a save fill right before the end of the first cave so I can remake my character however I want quickly, though I do think it is a great introduction to the problems that the player will encounter throughout the game.

Imagine how long it would take to max out all skills, it would take ages and not to mention that some skills are harder to increase than others. That alone is a good reason not to try. But if someone has it's only fair that they gain the full benefits because they have worked very hard for it.

    As much as I love old-school, D&D style RPGs, I actually like the classless system Skyrim has. It allows for a lot of customization, and what is The Elder Scrolls all about? Open ended gameplay. And as for the whole regenerating health issue, you seem to be exaggerating the rate health is gained. I'm guessing it's supposed to emulate the way you would slowly heal in real life.

Sure it's a simplistic, uninteresting dungeon, that really takes too much control near the beginning and right before the end, but considering it was the first dungeon of the game, it wasn't so bad. Skyrim's first dungeon is similar in that respect, except it expects you to make significant (though ultimately reversible) choices about a situation you know nothing about, and is preceded by a glorified sightseeing tour.

    The point I'm trying to make is that the only way to actually make your character truly efficient in that skill set is by using perks which completely undermines the level of your skill. Also there is the fact that there are perks that will actually increase the same stats that would have been effective by levelling your skill, even higher. You can actually increase damage of any weapon skill by 20% simply by applying the perk, 100% if you selected it 5 times.

    The lock picking in Skyrim is not in anyway luck based. While the "sweet spot" is randomized every time, as the lock difficulty increases the "sweet spot" shrinks. That means that if you don't throw away perks making lock picking easier at higher levels, you pretty much going to lose at least one pick for a master lock save for when it is a your start position. Using a mouse you can get through the game never losing more than 1 pick per lock with zero perk upgrades.

    • @xXDarkxIdealsXx
      @xXDarkxIdealsXx Před 9 lety

      Unlocktube lmao, if i can reliably open expert and even master locks without breaking a single pick or just 1 at most with a lockpick skill of ~15 then something is DEFINITELY wrong with the games mechanics. I means come on! Have you even played the game much? If you've put any kind of time into Skyrim you'd realize that there is zero skill to lockpicking aside from "getting the hang of how it works" which is extremely fast even if you haven't played fallout 3; and if you have played FO3 then it's just mind numbingly easy from the start lol. It reminds me of a far more simplified and easier version of Kingdoms of Amalur's magic lock system (forget the real name; the one where it has a mini-game where you touch the runes in the right order to unlock but you only have a couple tries to get it right. It was real easy even with low skill to just breeze through magic locked chests/doors etc.. simply by the "player" (us) being skilled at moving their hands fast; having nothing to do with the skill of the actual character which is what should matter. Although at least in that game you have some kind of reason to raise the skill as certain perks would increase the number of failed tries you had before the chest blew up on you. Although iirc you would STILL get the items inside even if it blew up as long as you survived the explosion lol. i mean come on! The chest should've just magically "perma-sealed" itself. -___-)

    • @Unlocktube
      @Unlocktube Před 9 lety

The standing stones throughout the game will give you the effect of a class and only one can be used at a time, but you can always choose to activate another at the cost of your current class. I almost didn't believe it when recently Bethesda updated Skyrim with "Legendary" skills. It allows players to keep their perks and re-level the skills, getting more perks than before, and it can be repeated. Basically it removes the level cap, the only thing that could possibly make different characters unique, since there are no classes or attributes. It isn't an RPG anymore. There are no "roles". Every level 250 character ends up being identical.
