      Hilarious, first of all, especially the slap bit, that got a solid amused exhale from me, GG, but I would hope that art theory would actually discuss the question, what makes art good? And, entirely separate question what makes art valuable? Or even who makes art valuable? There are also some interesting pop art with interesting stories that Matpat could look into. Adam ruins everything did a very interesting deep dive into the elitist nature of art, what/who determines the value of art, and the variety of art and how it is determined that some varieties of art merit a higher price tag than others, and questioned that system.

    I’m so glad y’all had that art discussion in the beginning. It’s a good reminder that the presentation and context of any work is important. Without knowing the context behind Van Gogh or Picasso, and just seeing the paintings with brief descriptions, it’s easy to draw the same conclusions MatPat did. I also thought the same thing before taking art history in college, where I then learned that Van Gogh hadn’t gotten popular until after his death and he was trying to make a living. (And that Picasso was a horrible person, even though his art is aesthetically pleasing to me). I’m glad mirror Matt had the confidence to spark further discussion and ideas!

      Thats the thing. Most of the artist will be popular after they died and also their "arts" will be expensive in bidding. Being an artist is really weird because they dont enjoy the outcome of their art before dead.

    @fuyutupx1437 Před 3 lety +382

    It is unfortunate that MatPat was so impressed with Picasso's wide body of work and dismissive of Van Gogh's art without understanding how their lives shaped how they could explore art. Picasso's interest in art was nurtured growing up and from a very young age had a lot of opportunities to focus on and explore art.
    Rather than saying Van Gogh copied other artists' art styles, it is more correct to say that while Van Gogh initially did learn and had and interest in art as a child he did not get to fully explore art until he was already an adult and his artist friends encouraged him to try out different mediums and styles. So he wasn't copying other's art style. He was still exploring art. And it's incredibly unfair to say that Van Gogh "copied other people's art style" when he was still exploring various art techniques and mediums before he found what he liked and suited him best.
    While "riding on coattails" is unfairly harsh, I do somewhat understand why MatPat might have image of Van Gogh as he had multiple artist friends basically support him at various points in his life. But he didn't "ride on their coattails" so much as friends trying to support friends. Perhaps the only one that I feel may cause someone to lean a bit closer to the "riding on coattails" sentiment is Gauguin. As Van Gogh was more clingy to their relationship and worried (correctly) that Gauguin was planning on leaving him. And that Gauguin stated that at the time had been concerned that Van Gogh and his brother may have been using him for money. However, I also don't believe that suspicion was substantiated, and Gauguin and Van Gogh still maintained correspondence and Gauguin himself put out the proposal to form and art studio with Van Gogh.
    But I mention Gauguin for 2 additional points that contrast to MatPat's opinions on Van Gogh and Picasso.
    1.While Gauguin and Picasso lived together Gauguin encouraged Van Gogh to try a new technique following in Gauguin's art process of "drawing from imagination" to which Van Gogh, taking advice from a fellow artist he respected did try out. After taking some time to try out this technique Van Gogh found he didn't like it and it didn't suit his personal art process and returned back to painting scenery in front of him.
    2.A few years after Gauguin's death there was an exhibit of his works in remembrance of him that Picasso went to and was heavily influenced by. His own interest in subject matter and art mediums such as ceramics at that time were directly influenced by the Gauguin exhibit. To the point that art critics still argue the degree of influence Gauguin had on one of Picasso's more notable art works that he created the year following that Gauguin exhibit.
    However in defense of MatPat on Van Gogh, his image of Van Gogh was formed after going to the Van Gogh Museum and the information he got there. Just as the Picasso museum managed to portray only the good parts to MatPat without divulging his more controversial personal life and personality and therefore by the information he received while there was able to for a mostly positive image of Picasso the same can be said that somehow the information MatPat got from the Van Gogh museum managed to give him a negative image of Van Gogh.
    Regardless of what Van Gogh's history actually was, it can be inferred that the way it was presented to Matthew when he was at the museum gave him a negative interpretation on Van Gogh's life. While one should try to find more information on a subject matter before forming such a definitive stance, as far as MatPat was concerned this information was being presented by what would be a reputable source, not simply an opinion one may read in an article or forum.
    We have no way at how the information was being presented to Matthew at the museum, whether it be just his own negative interpretation from missing information or maybe a tour guide having an off day and misrepresenting Van Gogh poorly that day. Either way, as far as that one instance goes I believe MatPat had formed an opinion on Van Gogh based on what he believed to be competent information.
    And I sincerely hope MatPat looks to learning more about Van Gogh and his personal history and how that shaped his artistry as well. And as a person who likes figuring out what makes things tick, I would hope that Matthew take a more proactive interest in historical figures to see beyond just the surface level of information presented before forming and in particular publicly stating such a strong stance one way or the other.
    I think it's personally fine if MatPat has a personal opinion against Van Gogh. Or prefers Picasso over other artists. But if you're gonna publicly state said opinions then you need to be able not only to argue for your point, but also defend against the weakest parts of your opinion. As it is, MatPat was ready to impassionedly argue for his respect of Picasso and his distaste of Van Gogh, but just from minor rebuttal from Mirror Matt was shown to be vastly ill prepared to defend any hijinks in his opinions from severe lack of in-depth knowledge on either artist.

      As a student of Art, I thank you. Bringing this clarification to the forefront is very important.
      Especially in the mastery of Art, many people didn't have the opportunities to evolve into their own style.
      Be it their personal life, background, family history, the land they hail from or even the society during their time. Many factors play a role on what art will turn out to be with most artists.
      I look at my family for instants. We're 8 kids, and we all did some art at some point. My bro had a weird tendency to draw like the "Biker Mice from Mars" or "Street Sharks" style, because those shows, plus the rise of Heavy Metal and Rock shaped his life.
      My older sister became infatuated with ancient architectural works, so she drew way more landscapes and buildings than any other of us.
      Next sister had a rebellious phase, thus a lot of her artwork was aimed as propaganda towards anarchistic demonstration.
      My artwork was influenced by the loss of family members, bullying and trying to find a retreat or save haven. I was influenced by works of fantasy, like Tolkien, and works of horror, like Stephen King's books and Junji Ito's manga, which can be also seen in some of my works, as I like drawing creepy stuff.
      The last of the bunch mostly spiral around edgy themes, anime and lastly fluffy animal characters.
      So yeah. Even though we're all in the same household and grew up together, each of us had found their own style, due to how the world and other people, media and such influenced us :3

    As a soon to be art history major, the thought of Picasso being "under appreciated" did physical damage. I could name probably 20+ artists who are more under appreciated than both Van Gogh and Picasso and explain why they deserve more recognition. When it comes to Van Gogh VS Picasso though, as far as I'm aware, Van Gogh jumped job to job, did missonary work, but was then dismissed by the church authorities when he gave away his worldly things. It was then that he decided to take art seriously since he saw it as his own way to serve humanity like he was trying to do with missonary work despite him being poor. He seeked guidance from other art professionals, not to piggy-back off of them but to learn since he realized self-training was difficult. His artwork didn't vary as much as Picasso's because his life with art wasn't as long as Picasso's was. Both are amazing artists but Picasso was a man who was able to go to art schools without any worry and who lived a long life where he could experiment while Van Gogh did his work with whatever he had and on an allowance of Francs that his brother gave to him.
    If there are any other art history buffs who read this, please add to or correct me if I got anything inccorrect! I get heated over art history and this is only from what I remember as well as a few quick searches to jog my memory.

However, none of that means he didn't take art seriously or work hard to perfect his craft.

    Dear MatPat, as someone who has raised goldfish for a good chunk of my life, State Fair goldfish need more care than what they receive.
    These fish need big tanks with good filtration and a good aerator, not to mention they need to have a tank heater to regulate the temperature. And from my previous experiences from these games, these fish barely get the required tank size.
    Because of the mistreatment of these fish, most of them end up dying early from illnesses like Ick/Ich.
    Another thing is that these goldfish are commonly given to children who don't know better. So they'll take them home, immediately put them in a bowl that they will not survive in because they're too small. (Plus the shock of suddenly being put into new water without getting used to the temperature) And then a few days later, fishy goes belly up.
    And that's assuming the child doesn't end up shaking the bag from taking it on a ride (Much like other Matt), shaking it themselves because they're a kid and they don't know any better, or from a long and bumpy ride home.
    To anyone reading this who wants to raise a goldfish, (or any fish for that matter) do me a favour and make sure you have a 50 gallon or bigger tank, fill it with water and decorate it how you like, get the filters and aerator pumping for a good couple of hours and make sure the heater is at the recommended temperature for the type of fish you are trying to raise, then go to the pet store and pick out your fish, keep their bag as steady as possible during the ride home, don't open the bag and instead place the whole bag in the water and keep it there for a few minutes so that the fish can get used to the water's temperature. Then you can open the bag and gently lower the opening to let some of the tank water in, wait a few seconds, then lower the opening of the bag until your fishy friend swims out on their own.
    Finally, gently empty out the rest of the bag's water and enjoy your new aquatic friend.
    Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Someone just handed him money and said do the thing, whatever you want. I am studying to be an art teacher and have taken many art history classes (adored art history since high school) and there are so many eventful art periods from about 1850-1950 that would blow matpat away! I think seeing the perspective of this historical timeline and how important Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, and many more talented artists have impacted the art world would change our views of traditional artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Bernini, Michaelangelo, etc. Both the famous traditional style of art and the different periods that challenged these views (Post Inpression, Harlem Renaissance, etc.) are both valid and important to our growth as a society. Even though we all may not agree about which artist we find to be the most important or impactful in the artistic world (got triggered by matpat's comment on Van Gogh, but he has every right to his opinion but I really think he should learn about this art timeline) each artist has made their mark in this world and has impacted at least one person and that is what makes art so amazing. I really do agree that we need to learn and see less famous artists because they are just as important as their famous counterparts, like I never knew Picasso had not only been a part of cubism but had a partner named Georges Braque (I hoped I spelt that right) and they worked off each other constantly. It came to the point it was incredibly hard to decipher who made which piece! It was also cool to learn that Picasso would create beautiful sketches of his paintings and slowly simplify them to where they look unrecognizable because he had to formulate how to change his subject into the style he used! Art history is just a lot of fun!

      @@jordanmatthews9239 exactly! I also felt his… lack of understanding about how Picasso worked as a person (he did find Patrons/wealthily Americans) and that the man *really* knew how to paint his classics before getting into deconstructing them because with the advent of photography classical portrait artists were straight up out of a job, which is why a lot of the artists all sort of moved "together" in experimentation with styles and colors and etc (that and they would all hang out around the same places and talk about what they were doing.) I don't think Van Gogh actually rode on anyone's coattails as a creator anymore than MatPat himself does by making theories about games/other people's works instead of writing his own stories. (And I don't consider that a low blow because I feel like what he does and what fandom does to expand on a story or theorize about what it could mean is an important part of fandom. It's just as important as fan art or fic.) So it's a bit unfair for him to make that judgment.
      (Also generalized European History + Literature major-specialized in revolutionary wars of the Atlantic but my other classes were all in Lit and general European History as it related to creative writing. So while I'm not at knowledgeable as you guys, the crossover between "artists between 1880-1935" and "writers between 1880-1935" is pretty much a close Venn diagram.)

    I'll say this, Impressionist art work was always about provoking emotion not about showing off technical skill, so when Mat said that he was not "impressed" by Van Gogh's work, you must understand that "impressing" the viewer was not the intent of impressionist art. As for Van Gogh himself he was in no way a "clout chaser" he was very much someone struggling to find their way in the world, thus when his friends lead him into the world of art, it was only natural for his style to be reflective of theirs. He was very poor so it is very likely that at some point he found himself in the position that artists still to this day find themselves in, where in order to justify the expense of creating art they must use it as a source of income. There is also contention as to whether or not the more infamous details of Van Gogh's life took place as history documented them to have happened, under modern understandings mental health especially of suicidal behavior there is reason to believe that he did not end his own life and there is documentation that would suggest that he lost his ear in a fight with French artist Paul Gaugin and that Van Gogh himself made up the myth of cutting off his own ear for the purpose of sparing his friend Paul Gaugin jail time for the accident.

    • @MM-ni3yl
      @MM-ni3yl Před 3 lety +40

      I would like to add, Impressionist were not really concerned provoking emotion, but capturing a moment in the moment. Before Manet and mostly Monet, Landscapes for example can almost be considered fictional as the whole composition and planning of a painting was done in a studio and then painted (which could take weeks, to get every detail perfect). The impressionist(Monet) believed you could only show true reality by paining in the moment, the impression you have in that moment, the light, the people of that particular moment of the day. which meant they had to finish a painting before the light changed to much, which meant technical skill was less important. But they were still trying to catch reality. Technically van Gogh was a post-impressionist, who strayed from the capturing reality trend, you can see in his earlier work the influence of impressionist, This includes his artist"friends" Cezanne(have not yet seen his name, again forgotten) and Gauguin, but what made van Gogh different is that he tried to express his emotion and perception of the world to the viewer, which inspired (lead to) expressionism. Cezanne focussed more on the relation of geometrical forms and collor which inspired (lead to) kubism and Gauguin who left Europe and was inspired by the native art of Tahiti, it's simplicity and which influenced (lead to) Cloisonnism which is more symbollic. There are more styles that are said to be influence by these three but i thinks these illustrate the difference between each of the artist.
      Also, something I found immensely interesting in understanding this period of art is the influence of Japanese prints.(I thinks that's the right translation)Because of the Japanese opened up a little for trading these prints were very new and not that expensive at the time, I believe. The simplicity and composition's of these influenced all three of these artist.
      Lastly, if MatPat meant Cezanne and/or Gauguin as the people whom van Gogh 'copied' from. They lived together, or at least around each other, for a period of time so no surprise that some of there work is similar. And they worked with similar idea's on art and what it should be even if they were very different people.

  • @hopsymopsy8352
    @hopsymopsy8352 Před 3 lety +40

    I'm so glad there are history and art buffs in the chat proving MatPat wrong because seriously unless you've done research or understand the life of an artist you have no right to criticise his path in art. He was poor, he found a passion late in life, he expressed multiple times that he hated having to burden his brother. Even his suicide wasn't likely because he always spoke that he would never do such a thing, but the inconsistences point more to him being murdered by some teenage bullies and covering it up becuase he was a NICE GUY. He got turned out of the Church because he gave away money while being poor and they thought it was innapropriate! Even the story about his ear being cut off probably wasn't true and he made it up to avoid the one who did it from going to jail. Granted, he may have had some old views or something, but he has always been better than what your slandering in this video Mat. His work is inspiring for people who wish to create but have little money and for people who suffer from depression. Also the "stealing other artists art styles" is a known thing in the art world and it's actually a good thing for artists to do when they start to really hone their skills because it helps them find what art they enjoy doing most. A good artist takes someone else's style and builds upon it until it starts to become their own. And I would love to see you try and create a piece of artwork that is "completely original" in style. Because you can't. You have to practice and practice to do those types of things, and considering he didnt get to go to art school, I think he did a pretty fuckin good job.

    For the Van Gogh discussion, I don’t think it was so much that he just wanted to be famous. I think he just wanted for people to like his art, and for reasons he couldn’t understand his own style wasn’t enough. So he tried to collab with other artists to get more recognition and money to make a good living. For most of his life he was living on the money his brother gave him, who was his patron. In his home town he would try and trade his art for food or drink because he was scraping by. I think everyone wants to be loved and admired for the things they love to do.

  • @emeralddarkness
    @emeralddarkness Před 3 lety +243

    Hate to say it but UR WRONG ON THIS ONE MATPAT, Van Gogh was self taught, but he was self taught because he had a passion for creating art. If he had tried to get into art to be rich and famous then he would have found another career after failing to get rich and famous off of it tbh, because during his lifetime he very much was not rich and famous.
    Being self taught of course he'd experiment with various styles including those that were more popular, and including those he learned more of from his friends who were popular, cause he wasn't rich, and doubtless wanted some of his work to sell so that he could, you know, eat. None of that negates him having a passion for creating art - he'd have to have had it or he just would not have kept creating art. Art didn't make his life easy.

  • @FabulousWaffles24
    @FabulousWaffles24 Před 3 lety +10

    People's treatment of goldfish is honestly terrible. As someone who has cared for them in the past, the mainstream idea of goldfish is so wrong. One needs at least, AT LEAST, a 20-30 gallon tank. Each additional one requires an additional 10-15 gallons. And a proper filtration system for all that. The tank needs real water plants to absorb nitrates and nitrites along with a healthy bacterial colony in the tank and filter. Frequent water changes are NECESSARY and must be carried out properly. This is a far cry from the tiny unfiltered bowls and tanks people put them in. Generally people think goldfish have short lives, but they can live up to 20 YEARS and should at least be pulling over 10 if treated right. Basically, none of those state fair goldfish are going to get proper treatment because no one knows how to care for goldfish. It makes me sad because fish are such beautiful creatures that deserve good lives.

      @@hannatude I thought so. I know Picasso was (very) classically trained. But alas, I took more history and Lit classes than I did art history classes (took a fair few number of art courses on my own time, however) so it felt really jarring to have MatPat say what, from what I've read/been taught, was basically dead wrong and based on what *he* thought the museum meant/said about Van Gogh.
      Now there is an artist (modern, I think? Like in the 1950s forward but I honestly can't remember and only know him because my grandmother likes him) who both my mum and I *hate* because he "found a style that worked for him" which was basically stick figures and poorly abstract versions of houses and such, whose name utterly escapes me. His Museum straight up also says "oh yeah, he couldn't do that and failed at having a grasp of classical style art/sketching so he only did this and made himself famous by getting a Patron" and after we found that out-after understanding how/why everyone from the impressionist to anyone doing cubism or any experimental art form playing with light, color, or shapes-we didn't even finish the museum and just turned around and left like 1/3 of the way through (unheard of for us.) I'll post an Edit when I remember the name/get a text back from my mum because it's gonna drive me nuts.
      And honestly if the museum hadn't been so blunt about "he really couldn't draw and stopped progressing with his tutors in art after YXZ age" we would've assumed that his style was more a "modern art choice" that was based on *something* other than "literally wasn't talented enough to do any other form of art than what an untrained 7-10 year old could do (and one who possesses zero natural talent.)

    On the claw game discourse: most are not super rigged though some are. Id call myself a claw game professional. Theres a trick to lining up the claw right to grab stuff. Boxes are hardest to grab but the stuffed animal games are super easy when you know the trick. Youve got to check not just in front but check the alignment from the side. You should also go for the prizes that look loosest and easiest to grab. A lot of times you can grab a couple loose ones to shift the items are get to prizes you want that are trickier to get. My dad taught me all the claw game tricks as a kid.

    This reminded me of a story I heard from a Walmart employee, a wholesome one, that's for sure.
    Apparently, there was this girl, who if I remembered right, had cancer. And in the hospital she was recovering in, they had one of these claw machines.
    She would play the claw machines every day for ages, and she. Got. Amazing at it.
    She eventually recovered from her cancer, and kept her claw machine skills with her.
    And she would go to, if I remember right, the Walmart this employee went to, have a sum of money, and spend it ALL on the claw machine they had, and she hardly if ever missed one.
    She would leave the store with trash bags full of stuffed animals from the claw machine.
    And she would donate them to children's hospitals for all the kids to enjoy.
    Warms my heart.

    Ay, Matpat, remember when you said that what you didn't like about the youtube algorithm was that it only continues to offer you things you agree with or things that you have historically liked? And how you said that it's necessary to challenge expectations/conventions/personal beliefs/points of views so that we will grow as people? It seems to me that is exactly what Mirror Matt is doing, and frankly, he deserves kudos for embodying a virtue that you have previously extolled on your channel. What has gotten into Mirror Matt today? Justice! That's what! Statistically, state fair goldfish are more likely to go to more careless or younger, more inexperienced child-age pet owners. That's the target demographic of those state fair games, and that's the majority type of recipient of a state fair goldfish. The treatment of those goldfish, is unlikely to be humane. Matt was not saying it is impossible that state fair goldfish will have good lives, merely that it is unlikely or rare that they would. You and Steph's treatment of animals is unfortunately more likely to be the outliers, rather than the norm. Human treatment of animals has been statistically and historically very poor. Heck human treatment of other humans reaches new lows frequently in human history. How much more worse will it be towards animals? Just take a peek at the meatpacking industry alone. You should laud Matt for challenging common perceptions. It is as you said (in passing in this video), we are learning and growing as people. That's a good thing, though to be fair, I understand that there can be some..."growing pains" in the process of learning.

I’m glad you respectfully pointed out that he needed to keep his own values in mind.

    I don't know about you but I find Van Gogh's style absolutely beautiful. Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings. As for what Matt said (Van Gogh looking for fame/copying other artists' work)... As many comments said here, Van Gogh had a clear passion for painting and didn't do it only for money and fame. I can't blame the man for wanting to earn money and recognition through his art as well as wanting to create. As for the plagiarism stuff, that's frankly part of the learning process. It's not the best thing but it's reality. Van Gogh was self-taught, and while learning how to draw/paint it's very common for people to copy other people's work before they develop their own styles. Just like most artists I did it too and I've never been ashamed or regretful of that, because it helped me learn.
    Also: Picasso was a great artist as well, but out of the two, Van Gogh was always my go-to. He was horribly mentally ill, had a really difficult life yet never gave up on his passion for art (if that isn't inspirational I don't know what is). Picasso was probably like that too to a certain extent but I didn't look too much into his life.

    I've seen that episode about 10 times and the look of awe on his face as the curator describes him as the most talented artist in all of history is still so powerful. I think Matt has lost his marbles here. Surely a TV show about a time-travelling alien protecting humanity is a better resource than the Van Gogh museum and whatever Matt read between the lines for.
