- In this video I climb the Boundary Peak, the highest mountain in Nevada, in the White Mountains. The scenery there was incredible! Then I drive north, back into California, and find a sweet campsite south of Lake Tahoe.
In the video I mention bears in Nevada. I did some more research about bear populations in the state and found this fascinating PDF report. It's worth reading if you too are curious about the Nevada bear population: www.ndow.org/uploadedFiles/ndo...

SUV RVing - It's vanlife in an SUV!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your travel adventures. You provide valuable insight in how it can be done without the $100k motorhome. You demonstrate excellent commentary, beautiful photography, and show your peace with our fabulous country (providing you don't look at the politics, LOL). Keep safe, travel unceremoniously.
Thanks for the kind words, James. I would definitely not want to take a $100k motorhome some of the places that I go! I'm happy that you like the videos, and thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Amazing hike and PBJ's for dinner. No better vacation a person can ask for.
Oh, wow! Vintage Tristan! Some things the same and obvious improvements to your videography since this. Fun to watch. Thanks!
I love longer videos and I LOVE when you put Long and Lat on your places. There are definitely places you have been I am putting on my bucket list.
I'm glad you like the longer videos. I like watching longer vids too, but I know not everyone does. At some point in the future I'd like to make a master map of all of the places I go, but I'm too lazy at the moment :)
Would love a map!
hey guys
Thank you for this! I was raised in Carson City and as I’ve gotten older I’ve missed it so much. I look forward to moving back to Nevada.
I got really excited when I saw your video was 18 minutes. I love the gorgeous scenery. Thanks for sharing!
Hahah, sometimes I worry about the longer lengths of some of the videos, so I'm glad you weren't too turned off by it. Thanks for watching and commenting, Burgh!
Beautiful views! That little camp site was perfect. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Having road tripped in the region from Tahoe to Yosemite to Death Valley, I definitely appreciated this video a lot and gave me so many ideas of what more can be seen. Totally loved how you climbed up on a mountain next to the road to check out the view. I gotta try it for myself.
Love the different terrains you find and many of them just by turning in a circle. Stay safe on your travels.
Thanks Dale!
Thanks for Shaing! May check this hike out sometime this year ❤
You are amazing and inspiring. Thanks for sharing your journey and the beauty.
Love your videos. Makes me want to jump in my car and explore our beautiful country. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into making them for our benefit.
Lots of great places to explore out there! Thanks for watching and commenting, Rosalyn.
Iam glad you brought your hiking poles.keep safe!
Thank you. One of the best van/camping/hike videos I've seen.
Awesome, I'm glad you liked it. This was a great hike and a great day out.
I find it really charming that you apologize about the weather and things you can’t control. Seriously, we all love you takin’ us with you!
Thanks for sharing.adding this to my bucket list.
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing a part of Nevada I've never seen.
Thank you for watching!
Get some good rest tonight fantastic video
Looks like a beautiful place these mountains in California and Nevada. Nice camp spot you found... I am telling my hubby about this... He will be thrilled... LOL
I'm sure he'd love it! Thanks Linda.
Looking forward to checking out this hikes; thank you for sharing. Neat vids and trips!!
It's a great hike. Definitely one worth doing. Thanks Lonely Walker!
So beautiful. I am concerned about you being out & about alone. I know you love it. Prayers for you, Sweetie. Enjoy! & Thanks. (Going to read that bear report.)
I don't know if anyone else will find the bear report interesting, but I sure did. And yes, I live for being alone in the mountains or the desert. It's my favorite thing. Thanks Sylvia!
Enjoyed this immensely! That camp spot at the end looked perfect! Thanks for letting me tag along!
I really liked that camp spot, and there wasn't another camper in sight! Thanks Shariris.
why didnt you stay longer?
Breathtaking!!!!! Stay safe and happy journey!!
Thanks Jaoqueline!
Unbelievable scenery!! I bet you slept really well after all that climbing....LOL We have such a beautiful country and seeing the unspoiled areas is so neat. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I definitely slept well that night! And yeah, every time I go out on a trip like this, I'm both in awe of how incredible the landscape is and how much there still is out there for me to explore. We're lucky, for sure. Thanks Carol!
Nice hike. Got a really nice picturesque sky working for you, no doubt you got some awesome pictures. I envy you, that's a beautiful trail, hope to maybe tackle that myself one day. So many trails, so little time🙄😃
Indeed! Thanks for watching.
Nice trip, great location.
Another goodie. Thank you for having me along.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Incredible videos, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful scenery!
Definitely a really pretty place!
I enjoyed tagging along! Thanks :)
Thanks Connie!
I'm surprised you didn't catch couple rising trout.. Awesome timing on " let's see if I can catch one jumping,, as if he heard you & right on que , perfect jump..lol. Thanks gorgeous scenery.
This was before I fished 😁
Thanks for sharing the videos! I just bought a SUV this summer and will be outfitting it this fall to start my own adventures. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome! What SUV did you get?
I am trying my luck with the Mercury Mountaineer. Available from a friend at a reasonable price. It is a start. This fall I will be finishing the platform in the back for sleeping and storage (the seats do not fold flat and there are gaps between the seats). Who knows, maybe I will even put some of the build on CZcams.
Definitely do it! If nothing else, send me pics of the build or setup so I can post them on the blog. I'm sure other people would find that interesting too.
Excellent!! I'll update you when I get farther along. Thanks again for the motivation!
What a pleasure to watch your video , now I am hooked . Just if I travel with you in your backpack. You have a new subscriber. Take care ,angels are watching over you. 🙋🏻 Apple.
Thanks for the kind words, Apple, and welcome aboard! I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
I watch all of your videos and I often wish you would give the GPS coordinates like you did in this older video. I call myself the map nut and I like to look on the map to see exactly where you are. I always enjoy your videos.
Well, I have good news for you then lol. The GPS coordinates are in the description of every video.
Vreat video...Am in the Sierras now in the Tzhoe Nationzl Forest. Am planning maybe to do the 89 from north to a ways south in a couple of weeks
That's a beautiful drive. You'll have a great time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
One of my favorite places ever.
Definitely an awesome place! Thanks MGW.
Wish I’d known you were going to be here in Bishop, our home town. We have some spectacular petroglyphs in the area that are just a short hike from where we live. Next time give us a holler.
Glad to see you're still hiking despite hip problems. Those orange guy line hoops that you sewed onto your Leapair is a great idea. Suggest Smuckers Goober PB&J is great for camping and making sandwiches (Bagels are good too as their hearty and keep well)
The hip problems are complicated. I was taking some medication that helped mitigate the hip pain, but it gave me an ulcer, so I had to stop taking it. Still trying to figure out exactly what is wrong. lol I really dislike the name of the Smuckers Goober stuff. Not appetizing. But I may try it in the future. I haven't taken bagels on too many of my trips, but I should. Thanks Ted!
Yea that name Goober is unappetizing but it's convenient for camping 'cause it combines PB and J in one jar. Funny old SNL skit about Smuckers: czcams.com/video/R_D0S9pATck/video.html
I love Bishop, CA and the 395N drive from LA!!!
Fantastic thank you for the video
Thanks!
Great video, I don't know how I missed it before. I've been a subscriber for a while and I live in Reno. This would have caught my attention.
This is a great area to explore!
Still can’t understand why you don’t have 6M subscribers at least. You easily have the best travel videos on CZcams and I watch a lot of CZcams travel and nomadic videos. And I appreciate all the detail..I look forward to every one!!
Thanks for the high praise, Eddy! I don't know if I'll ever get to 6M, but I'm happy with whatever growth I get. I appreciate you watching and commenting :)
Very nice
Spectacular! Glad your hip (s) held up!
Be certain to factor in your cost benefit analysis ~
Hi there! I very much enjoy you videos and your understated presentation style. I am trying to do the state high point thing and your videos on the subject are very useful (I am missing a ton of western ones, yet, MT, WY, CO, OR, NV). If I could humbly ask two things: could you please add somewhere that what was the date that you summited these mountains? It would be good which part of the year does the video represent snowpack and weather-wise. Also, could you compile either the state high points, or in all mountain summit videos in a playlist? Thanks a lot, keep up the wonderful work!
One day I hope you can take your children to the peak so that they discover your name on the register...and the world goes on. Thanks for sharing yet another magical journey.
I envision them climbing up mountains of their own accord and stumbling across my name on random summits 😁
Can't go wrong with peanut butter sandwich. That's my go to, too.Enjoyed the hike. Have you ever hiked Mt. Whitley? Enjoying the video's. Safe travels.
Yep, I've been to the top of Mt. Whitney twice, once via a rock climb (the East Face) and once via the trail. Love that area!
Very lovely video. The mother in me has concerns regarding your safety since you have no phone service. I hope you notify people of your whereabouts. I remember when Aron Ralston had to cut off his arm to free himself after getting lodged under a rock in Utah. His mistake was to not tell anyone where he would be. Hope you are wiser. I do love your adventures!
Yep, I definitely tell people about my plans. Believe me, it is in my best interest to not get hurt or die :) Thanks Jane!
I will b there in 2018 rtr. I 2 am not much a peep person. but wull be there in Jan 18... maybe see u there.
Great show, as usual. Thanks. Have mosquitos been a problem?
There were quite a few mosquitoes in Yosemite, but they haven't been a problem anywhere else. Thanks for watching!
It's hard to tell distance from the video but were you tempted to hike the ridge and peak Montgomery Peak? I can't wait to someday go out on these long no-timeline adventures as well.
Yes, I was tempted a bit by the ridge to Montgomery Peak, but I was tired and had heard that it felt like a much longer and more tiring traverse than it looks. I didn't give it any real consideration because of that. Thanks Jay!
Nice video, first video on BP I watched till the end. I live at the bottom of Trail Canyon. Any of your viewers planning to make that climb should do it fast if they want that beautiful view on the Nevada side because it will be a view of Lithium mining and geothermal wells in the very near future unfortunately.
Do you ever run into Wonder Hussy while on your travels, lol. She is also unique, but covers a lot of the same areas, but more of ghost towns, mining shack, etc, but also often a solo explorer. I just wonder if you youtubers run into each other, but the western states are so vast and unpopulated and such beautiful wilderness underrated! Keep up the awesome work!
Nope. I'm vaguely aware of her, but I've never watched her videos and don't follow her. So even if I did run into her, I wouldn't recognize her. But as you said, it's a big world out there, and there's a lot to explore. Even if I were on the lookout, we'd still probably never run into each other.
Make a playlist of state high points reached, maybe include all peaks videoed.
Love your videos. Was it a lot cooler on top?
Yep, it was significantly cooler on top. Not sure of the exact temperature, but I'm guessing in the low 60s. Thanks Bill.
I'm turning 60 in a few days, wished i would have climbed more mountains in my youth.😀
Get out there and climb! I just did Boundary Peak at age 70. Age is no excuse. We might be slower but we're smarter...
I am pleasantly surprised by the hiking you accomplish Tristan. Do you carry bear spray just in case you have an encounter with a bear or even Sasquatch? Risky not having it in case of bears.. Keep up the great videos & climb as many as you can while you are young & healthy enough & still able too. Peace oit.. Big Jim 635/AKA BOSTON.
I carry bear spray in grizzly bear country (for me, that's usually the Greater Yellowstone area) but rarely in black bear country.
Have your documented your climb to granite peak, Montana? Could you share your experience? Thanks!
Great video!...Will u b at the 2018 RTR? I think I already asked....but cant remember your answer....Now time to try and order your SuvRving book. Stay safe!
I actually haven't decided yet if I'll be a the RTR in January. I'm not much of a people person, and I've gone down to that part of Arizona for each of the last two years. We'll see. Are you going?
Yes ill be going. will be my second time. found it interesting last year and hope to meet more "youtubers" this time. Bob wells of cheap rvliving CV Kevin and the woof pack. DebraJoy, Caravan Carolyn and a few others.
This is one of the most beautiful videos in your series. Wonderful stuff thanks.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. This was a great day out in a really beautiful place. Thanks for watching.
Next time you might think about going to the Bristle Cone Pine forest East of Big Pine . The oldest trees on Earth live there .
That's a good idea. I've seen bristlecone pines in Nevada and Utah but haven't been to any in the White Mountains. Thanks Stan.
SUV RVing The Methuselah Tree ( oldest known living tree at 5,500 years ) is in Ancient Bristle Cone Pine Forest You get there from Big Pine off the 395 by heading East into the White Mountains .www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/specialplaces/?cid=stelprdb5129900
You should learn how to Tenkara fly fish and carry your gear with you on your adventures for those situations where you might run into some good fly fishing. Tenkara is easy and the gear is light and takes up hardly no space. Living in Utah, there are opportunities almost everywhere you go.
You know, I've actually been thinking a lot about tenkara fly fishing over the last few months and watching videos about it. I'm also into ultralight backpacking, and tenkara fishing is big in that space because, as you said, it's light and doesn't take up much space. Fishing hasn't really appealed to me in the past, but the simplicity of tenkara fishing appeals to me, even though I know basically nothing about fishing and don't particularly like to eat fish. From your videos, it looks like you're in Ogden, as am I. Maybe sometime I can pick your brain about it?
Sure. Every video I post is within 2 hours of Ogden, with the majority being less than an hour away. There is so much public or accessible land in Utah for outdoor recreation that you can hardly believe it. Ogden seems to be right in the middle of it all. Within just a few minutes drive we have rivers to fish and kayak, reservoirs to paddle board and boat on, three ski resorts and not to mention the East bench of Ogden is all hiking/mountain biking trails. I love Ogden. And by the way, I also turned my 2008 Honda Pilot into a micro camper. You can view it on my Utah Tenkara channel. It was posted Jun 5th, 2017. Turning your SUV into a camper like you did allows you to access many more remote places.
Loved the views. Love your videos
Thanks Janey. Definitely some fantastic views up there. It was an awesome hike.
Is that ammo box the same thing as a Geo cache where people leave various items and sign the book??
It may also be a geocache, but I think it was a summit register first. It was not hidden or anything, and summit registers in ammo cans predate geocaching. Thanks PR!
👍👍
So what trailhead did you use and how did you find it?? Was it the road just after the mine with the white stuff? I'd like to go up in a couple weeks?
You didn't mention the super-sucky boulder section below the summit.
Explain the reason for the "commercials"??!
I like your shirt.
It's one of a kind!
Where was that West Fork River? County Rd 89 CA?
The GPS coordinates for that rest stop are in the description: 38.4485, -119.4566
OMG! Bears 🐻 are NOT fun to see!!!! Anyway, where can I get a SUV RVing t-shirt? Thanks for sharing. 😎
The shirt isn't for sale anywhere. I've never really loved the logo, so I'll change it at some point, and then I'll make shirts and stickers and stuff available after that. I ordered one for myself just so I could have it. And stay tuned, I *may* have had a close encounter with a bear a week or so after this and gotten a video of it :)
I would love a t shirt too! Get on that! 😊
Not much vegetation up there LOL...
Am I the first surveyor to watch this? That's actually a US Coast and Geodetic Survey (now the National Geodetic Survey) mark at 9:53 not a US Geological Survey mark. I encourage everyone who's interested in the outdoors to do some research and learn the difference between the agencies.
You're right 👍
The cabins are scared of Mary.
i just checked and there are restrictions for fire burning EVERYWHERE.
For as wet and snowy as the winter was, it's also been a pretty dry summer around the west! Thanks Mimi.
are there snakes there lol no one seems to talk about the snakes spiders and scorpions
Yes, there are snakes out there. I see about 6-10 snakes per year and have shown them in my videos. Spiders are everywhere. In all of my travels, I've only seen a scorpion once.
I think that ammo can is actually a geocache. This one actually: www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCQM8T_boundry-pk-cache
It could very well be both, but summit registers in ammo cans predate geocaching.
True. Was there a logbook with names in it, and did you happen to take a photo of the log book? That wouldn't be conclusive, but the names could be compared with the names on the geocache page. :)
So, you go to some very lovely places but you dont stay there except for overnight? Why? If you can stay up to 2 weeks why not stay and not spend so much time driving?
Because I'd rather see more places. I'd rather go to 30 lovely places in a month than 2, and there are not 2 weeks worth of things I want to do in most areas.
I'm pretty sure the only bears in Nevada exist near Tahoe.
Nope. More info here: www.ndow.org/Education/Kids/Stryker_the_Bear_Dog/All_About_Black_Bears/
@@SUVRVing ok, still along the Sierras. Like 3% of the state. Thanks for the reply and keep the great vids coming.♥️
