I liked Tuomas's voice back then. It went really well with the style of the album, the first Nightwish. It was more raw and depressive.

Yes. 100%. A few years after getting into nightwish, I found the newer albums and was so sad Tarja wasn't in them. So I did some research and found out why. Took me a long time to be okay with it.

Depends which day they recorded this, it's close to her 20th birthday. When the album was released she was 20.

I never though they would play this song again, Floor and Troy do a great job, but Tarja and Tuomas made it unique, this is one of my favorite songs of Nightwish ever.
I have a feeling that if you traveled back in time to 1997 and told someone who just watched this video that Nightwish would become one of the best and most beloved metal bands in the world, they would have laughed at you. Then you could laugh right back in their face and say, "You have no idea what's coming..."

Any little thing you change after going back in time can have a huge impact, though. That includes Nightwish.
Some people may say that this video is old school and primitive...well naturally it is different than those made in 2018. But let's remember that it was the first musicvideo they made when being hardly 20 years old by themselves and they did it with small budget. That makes me wonder how well done. The theme has a very deep meaning including symbols and it has been put together with high skill. That is one reason why I keep coming to see this again and again ... still.

The melody and the chorus is so hauntingly addictive.....
This is the closest the band ever came to sounding like a gothic metal band. Their sound is usually so uplifting and epic, whereas the downbeat and ominous riffs and melodies on this song remind me of Tristania or Moonspell. Love that majestic late-90’s niche of atmospheric metal bands.

Why I keep coming back to this video?? There is something really authentic in this vid. Gethsemane is also great piece of art.
Starlight3000. Exactly...I do the same and also sometimes wonder why. This and Gethsemane are corner stones of the early era and fundamental baserock of NW. It somehow reminds us from where it started and gives view to the present style. I also admire how young they were when doing great music like these pieces which also have some connection to the Big Book and I do not mean Tolkien.
At this time there were only Tuomas, Tarja, Jukka and Emppu. And they did great.

It's so soothing until he hits the chorus along with tarja. That's where the magic spins.
Yeah, I get that it sounds quite bad in Beauty and the Beast or Astral Romance, but in this one it's nicely soothing
It's firstly Toumas who hates his own singing, so kinda irrelevant what the rest of us think, but it's better he spent the years composing, etc. too, not taking voice lessons.
Tuomas has a great voice! It's not very dramatic, but I think it fits the style.. I've never heard this song before.

I don't quite get all the hate this song is getting, judging from the comments. Personally, I love this song, it is one of the first Nightwish songs that I listened to and made me a fan of the band. It is definitely in my top 10.

I can definitely hear the range in Tuomas' voice, he just has absolutely no control over it due to a lack of training. He's a bad singer, but he doesn't have a bad voice like he thinks he does, he's off-key but not terrible. All in all, he sounds pretty typical of 90s grunge singers, which makes sense given when Angels Fall First came out. Good fit for the era, but not for the genre, not that anybody knew that at the time, since this was one of the first songs ever made in the Symphonic Metal style.

Tuomas's voice isnt horrible its just weak when trying to get up to the louder section! but when hes sings softly its absalutly perfect PERFECT SPOT ON DIME!!!!!!!! how do i know i musically gifted!!! and on good days i can get up to the opera like tarja did but on a good day but deeper and a lil slower.
He also isnt really in tune. But these released songs of angels fall first were supposed to be a demo. The label pressured them to release it anyway

Nightwish songs are quite often mysterious and have intelligent challenging lyrics with a message, deeper meanings and even poetry, sometimes science. That is one reason I like them. Too often people can hear cheap pop songs like "yeah yeah baby I miss you -style".
