  • Yasmeen (they/them) was a perpetual procrastinator. They would always wait until the last minute to write a paper or start an assignment. But then came a tough college course and an equally tough professor. Yasmeen’s old methods were no longer working, which set them on the path to an ADHD diagnosis.
Yasmeen reflects on growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, specifically their struggle with homework. Yasmeen, who’s a user researcher, also shares what they’ve learned about the over- and underdiagnosis of ADHD in the Black community.

"even knowing I tried my best, I still failed" this is exactly how I feel right now. I failed my driving exam because I can't do the 45° parking, I can only do it by reversing and you are supposed to do normally

I feel like accommodations should be able to extend to driving, no? For instance, paraplegics can drive with car modifications.
Is there a special driving instructor in your area for drivers with disabilities?

Keep trying don’t ever give up, you guys can do it. Find a kind understanding person, have them take you out. and just practice parking. Good luck 😉

Do you mean reversing in a curve? If this is it then your teacher sucks. You should back up to the first cone and then make a 2 circles of steering wheel (or 2 and a half I do not remember) till you make a car straight and then set the steering wheel on default. It is almost automatic.
if you wrote about parallel parking there is also a way how to handle that with such trick.

What you said about school and how you were doing well “enough” but showed some signs, that resonates for a lot of people. It’s frustrating that it’s not even something they test for unless the kid is already showing up with awful grades and hyperactive behaviors that not everyone shows. That’s still a standard today. A child has to fail to get help, instead of being proactive and giving the tools that kid needs now.
Also, how you described the mask, to not be bullied and different, and how the teacher saw through it, it happened to me too. A paper I had given to the English majors, as a part of the “learn how to give/take feedback” part of the paper process, came back to me with a note: You have really great thoughts. And I get what you’re saying, but I need you to take scissors and literally cut up each paragraph to rearrange it. Your thoughts are everywhere.” It was actually a great lesson, but he was the first to call me out on it.
Thank you for sharing, Yasmeen. It’s not always easy!

The only trouble is that everybody has these. I mean I never liked doing homeworks. I never liked sitting through boredom and discomfort. Like I never ever did homeworks.
So Is everyone to be diagnosed with ADHD?
I just can't wrap my mind around it
