  • For those dyed-in-the-wool romantics out there, I'm certain the 2004 film 'The Notebook' holds a special place in your hearts. For those who haven't seen the film (no spoilers!) it is the story of Allie Nelson and Noah 'Duke' Calhoun, whose life-long love is retold through the pages of Allie's journal. In this video series I embark on recreating that journal as it might have been before Allie first set pen to paper.
    Part 1 covers the initial planning of the book, as well as sewing and trimming the text block and rough cutting the boards. In this video I will finished the text block by adding the ribbon and lining the spine, as well as assembling the case and covering it with book cloth. In Part 3 I will tool the decorative lines on the covers, pare and apply the leather corners, and finally attach the text block to the cover, completing the book.

I have a few in mind but I'm sure there are more, and if this video proves popular I might make it into a full Book-Prop series.
    As always, thanks for watching!

      I'm watching this a couple of years later, in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, where we're under a Heavy Rain Warning (again!), and a Thunderstorm Watch from Te Ratonga Tirorangi/Met Service. I'm glad you mentioned you were having thunder, as I might've thought it was ours! Loving the videos; they fascinate me, and your narration is perfect ❤🇳🇿

    I wonder how well unprimed canvas would work in place of the woven strip. I say it that way to point out they are both woven. 🙂

    • @FourKeysBookArts
      @FourKeysBookArts  Před 2 lety

      The canvas could be a bit thick and bulky, but in principle they would serve the same purpose.

    Hi there, how did you determine the distance between the two bookcases and the spine of the Book?
    Is there a standard width or does this differ with the thickness of the book?
    I‘m looking foreward for your reply.
    The videos are great btw. Thanks a lot. Ruedi

    So I've heard people say that the acids in pva glue yellow things over time due to acid. Is this something you worry about or do you not plan for your books to last that long?

    • @FourKeysBookArts
      @FourKeysBookArts  Před 2 lety +4

      I use archival acid-free pva.

    You mention that the thickness of the text block with covers is 22cm. That would be very big. I'm pretty sure you ment 22mm. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @FourKeysBookArts
      @FourKeysBookArts  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, that would be a massive book!😂 22mm is correct.

  • @Myrddraalfade
    @Myrddraalfade Před rokem +3

    That is a thick book at 22 centimetres I think that is an error and you meant 22 millimetres thick?

    Hello. I was wondering if Mull is the same thing as Super?
    I can’t seem to figure out if it is? It looks similarities but I’m not really sure. And I don’t want to buy the wrong item.
    I want something that will allow the spine to remain flexible so that my journals can open up and lay as flat as possible.
    I believe Super does that so maybe it’s the same? I was hoping you would be able to shed some light on the subject for me. It would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

    • @FourKeysBookArts
      @FourKeysBookArts  Před rokem +3

      Mull, super, and scrim are all the same thing, just a loosely-woven cloth (like cheesecloth) that is stiffened with starch. Thanks for watching!
