Hi everyone! My name is Dennis and I'm the owner of those unmanicured hands that keep getting in the way of the action in my videos. I'm a self-taught bookbinder and in May 2019 I filmed myself making a book and uploaded it to CZcams. I actually left the book unfinished for many months, until I discovered that people were actually watching the video and wanted to see the book completed! Since then I've been learning the craft and building my skills. Along the way I try to document my projects and pass on any pearls of knowledge I may stumble upon. I hope you'll take some time and explore the channel, and if you like what you find then please do be sure to subscribe. Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers,
Dennis
P.S. Many of you have reached out to ask me if I take custom orders. While I do appreciate this outpouring of appreciation for my craft, I must politely decline any such inquiries. Apologies in advance for any potential disappointment.

Introduction To Paper Marbling - Making A Custom Design For DUNE
** This video was originally soft-launched as bonus content for 'Rebinding Dune - Part 2', but is now public for all of CZcams. **
Hello everyone!
Paper marbling is a very old art form that has long been closely associated with bookbinding. I began marbling paper and bookbinding at about the same time, so for me it is an important aspect of the book arts.
While this isn’t a tutorial, I’m sure there will be plenty of questions about materials and techniques, so I’ll try to get out ahead of some of them here.
PAPER MARBLING TOPICS
The Carrageenan: There are 3 types of carrageenan, only one of which is suitable for marbling. Look for “Lambda” carrageenan. It’s usually available in powdered form, though if you are in the UK I understand it can be found in its whole fresh state.
The Paint: I use high-quality acrylic paints, most often Golden brand heavy-body acrylics. High quality paints have enough pigment to produce vibrant colours. I thin these with water to achieve a relatively thin consistency, so the amount of pigment is critical. Many marblers use gouache paint, though I haven’t tried that myself.
The Surfactant: Ox gall, an animal byproduct, was the traditional spreading agent for marbling. Genuine ox gall is hard to find these days. Instead I use a product called Kodak Photo-Flo 200.
The Paper: Many different types of paper can be marbled, as well as fabrics, ceramics, wood, glass, etc. Two of my preferred papers are 120 gsm Fabriano Accademia, and 125 gsm Canaletto Velino.
The Alum: Unlike alum for household pickling, alum mordant is Potassium Aluminum Sulfate. It’s available in pure powdered form online, or check your garden center for a soil acidifier for turning your hydrangeas blue. It’s not as pure as the refined powder (it usually has little stones in it) but I used it for many prints with good results.
PAPER MARBLING FAQ
Q: Can you make more than one print at a time?
A: No*, each print is unique. The size must be cleaned of any remaining paint and prepared fresh for the next print. (*technically a print can be taken of whatever paint is left on the size after the original print is taken, but the result will be basically blank in the middle, with only pale, washed-out looking colours around the edges. But when done with intent it can create an interesting effect all on its own. But insofar as taking multiples of the first-quality print, that is impossible.)
Q: How do you clean the bath after taking a print?
A: I use strips of regular newspaper to skim the surface, which will pick up any remaining paint. I usually skim twice after every print.
Q: How much carrageenan do you put in the water?
A: It varies, depending on the viscosity I need. For the bath in this video I used 13.3 grams of lambda carrageenan powder per liter of distilled water.
Q: Have you ever tried marbling on other materials than paper?
A: Yes, marbling can be applied to a wide variety of materials. Fabric is a very popular one, though I haven't tried that. But I have done leather, wood, terra-cotta, glass, and bird feathers!

I tried to come up with a good word to use at the finale and reveal. The only thing that comes immediately to mind is.”WOW.”
Thank you, sir. It has been two hours of an exciting journey and a beautiful story. Not quite as much as the content of the book, but definitely something I will also enjoy re-reading (or watching) in some time. I already donated for your coffee, It was worth every penny. Sending warm regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
for the part at 12:34, why wouldnt you cut the other way, so you’re not pushing on the spine of the book
11:33 LOL
WOW !!! That's magnificent! I've very much enjoyed following your journey in creating this masterpiece. You are an exquisitely talented artist and craftsperson. Congratulations on achieving your dream.
I’m not exactly sure how the CZcams algorithm sent me to this series, but boy am I glad it did. I have no interest in becoming a book binder, but watching an artist work and understanding how things are put together is something I consider infinitely valuable. Thanks for sharing your skill and passion.
dude!!!! did you compose your own music for this too?
The Dune Paper is my favorite!
i would pay thousands for this
wowza
こんにちは。素晴らしいです。あなたのビデオはとても素敵です😍
Whats gonna be your next project?
Marvelous ! That’s a treasure ❤
Wow 😮
I was just thinking that I would LOVE more of your marbling videos!!
Beautiful photography of a very complex process, and a superb exposition of what you are doing. Bravo, and thank you!
such quality thanks
It's your book, you do you. But there are a variety of things that ruin it completely.... 1. The Cyclops Medusa on the cover, stupid 2. Using the original cover art in the book as pages, ignorant, doesn't fit, ruins the rest of the aesthetic 3. The hardware is neat but doesn't fit, it's too big and not in the same style as rest of book. 4. While you do a great job it's very obvious you are not a professional and this is just a hobby. 5. The biggest grief I have is the vignettes all over the place, it's a book not an action movie 🤦
I came because of Dune (the first video in the series came up on my algorithm) but stayed because of the asmr of watching an artist practicing his craft. We'll done. Never thought I'd watch 2 hours worth of book binding, but here I am.
How and where do you even learn how to do this stuff?
Hobby level woodworker here, could you veneer plywood with this style of paper or would you maybe need a thicker paper or even canvas? Would those materials take this process just as well?
I love this one, but I wish the binding were tighter, where spaces between signatures were minimized. I have made my own endbands and tried to use that to reinforce the slits. Unfortunately the slits are not a great place to try to sew an end band onto. I will experiment more.
That's quite impressive. Great work!
Hi Dennis, I do also paper marbling, and in Turkey I've been taught to lift the paper while rubbing/scraping the paper to the side of the tray, this way you don't lose the carrageenan and you don't have to wait until the carrageenan run down to the tray. (Just stumbled upon your channel and not sure you are doing this way on purpose; if you do so then no worries.) Cheers,
Это просто великолепно! Наслаждение для глаз
Crap on a cracker, my friend, this is absolutely brilliant. Your $12 book just took a Olympic sized leap in value.
Magnifique résultat. Quel savoir-faire ! Bravo
This is Love manifested into physical form through human action, i have nothing but the deepest respect for your craftsmanship, and only the humble gratitude of this Dustling that was honoured with you're Art to offer. May you have the greatest of Days, just as you made mine.
This looks absolutely incredible!
Ooo… print a Battlestar book with the corners removed 😅
This is absolutely the coolest book binding I’ve ever seen. This looks incredible!
Question: have you done a video on how to print signatures? That is, how to format a book into however many pages, or finding pre-formatted books? I also wouldn't mind buying unbound signatures I've been wanting to hand bind a book (pride and prejudice) for my wifebfor a really long time, and this channel is an absolute goldmine!
Wish I had skills and could do stuff.
Jaw dropping amazing!
Sorry I don’t see Tiger eye. But is very pretty.
Speechless. No notes.
This man is the definition of dedication
Nothing can beat the simple beauty of a linocut print.
The infinite patience and commitment is extraordinary and shows your dedication to your craft.
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, Ive seen countless forging videos, restoration videos, diarama videos, but this tops them all. That book needs to be in a airtight, humidity controlled display case in a museum. Well done sir.
I’ve always loved the look of old beautifully bound books so being able to witness the whole amazing, painstaking, labour intensive and outstandingly skilful, creative process has been mesmerising. It warms my heart to know people are maintaining and sharing the knowledge of this wonderful art form. So many exquisite elements it’s breathtaking.
Fantastic ❤Ty so much!!! I am a newly at making books - I think you saved me a lot of heart ache 😊 appreciate you
I want to see more paper marbeling !!
Beautiful result
Wonderful.
I love the books and now marbling content. It's so amazing watching you keeping this art form alive and doing such amazing book bindings. I'm so glad I found your channel, it's something I listen to while prepping my stories for the next dnd sessions for my group.
How would a laser jet printer even bleed through?
What a masterpiece sir! The book looks amazing, it looks like the story is illustrated in your carvings. Thank you for sharing.
beautiful! must be so fun to make =] controlled chaos
