Die Cable-Car im kalifornischen San Francisco sind wohl eines der Wahrzeichen dieser Stadt und eigentlich auch weltweit bekannt. Die letzten drei verbliebenen Strecken sind seit vielen Jahren ein Besuchermagnet und die Bächnchen prägen das Stadtbild ungemein. Für dieses Video habe ich die kompletten Strecken im Film festgehalten, dies verhäuft nur auf Außenaufnahmen. Begonnen wird im Cablecar-Powerhouse und dannach sind die Szenen sortiert nach Streckenäste (Hyde, Mason, Powell, California). Während die beiden Powell-Linien (Hyde & Mason) mit Einrichtungswagen bedient werden, welche an den Endpunkten über Drehscheiben gewendet werden, wird die California-Linie von Zweirichtungsfahrzeugen genutzt, welche an den Endpunkten stumpf umsetzen. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

I grew up on the cable car lines in more than one apartment. I love the sounds of the track, the bumps and squeals of the cable cars, the smell of the pine brakes, and of course the bell action. I sorely wanted to be a gripman when I was a kid, and ecause I was a local kid, and probably because of my unabashed enthusiasm, the operators usually allowed me to ride for free, which I took every advantage of.
Oh wow, I envy you for your childhood.

The San Francisco Cable Cars aren't trams , they don't operate on electricity like trams and Streetcars.
The San Francisco Cable cars are pulled along the streets by way of a steel cable running under the street and a powerhouse with gigantic motorized wheels drag the Cable cars along their route.

I rode on the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines in June of 1981, before the system was overhauled.

San Francisco, eine der schönsten Städte der Welt, für mich jedenfalls. Auch die Architektur ist super. Und die Cable Cars sind der Hammer. Aber der größte Schatz ist die Golden Gate Bridge. Leider bin ich zu alt, um dort mal Urlaub zu machen. Aber ich liebe diese schöne Stadt und ihre Brucke.

Daumen hoch auch für diesen Film ! Nicht nur die Cable Cars und ihre Strecken an sich sind eine tolle Sache, auch das Power House ist "mächtig gewaltig" - und das tollste an allem ist, das es bis heute funktioniert :-) :-)
Vielen Dank! :-) Das Cable Car hat einen totalen Reiz...es machte richtig Laune, auf den linksseitigen Trittbrettern mitzufahren und die entgegenkommenden Touristen mit gegenseitig hochgehaltener Hand abzuklatschen. Dieses Video versuchte ich wieder nahezu Streckennetzdeckend aufzunehmen, gelang ja auch zu 95%! Schade allerdings war die "Gleichgültigkeit" vor Ort...ein 8 Minutenintervall hätte gefahren werden sollen, doch indes stauten sich die Wagen an den Endpunkten und das Fahrpersonal quatschte gemütlich...reale (gemessene Zeiten) waren dann Intervalle zwischen 12 und 18 Minuten...und das bei voll wartenden Touristenschlangen an den Haltestellen. Nun...das arbeiten hat man dort wohl nicht ganz erfunden... ;-)

My home town. Use to ride the Powell/Market st cable car to my grandmothers house.
I like it to travel each day of my visit by cablecars. :-) At end of each day i travel from Fishermans Wharf (Hotel) by F-line to Powell street and take a cablecar at the long route to Hyde-Street! :-)

After only seven minutes into the video I was hooked; not just the shots themselves, but the quality of camera work. Many others I left after a minute of less because of the wild swings in panning. Great work.

I used to be in powell/Mkt all x. But I've only rode couple times. I went to. Masonic Auditorium during jazz fest. So I rode car down to mkt to transfer and go home...it frankly scared me to death the guy running ahead breaking...it was like the roller coaster lol I was actually scared the car would get loose and run away. It is indeed an experience. I miss SF I indeed left my .😘 there.

There must be a mess of pulleys under the streets and a maintenance nightmare! It's interesting from a design and engineering point though.

Ich sehe, Sie sind Deutscher. Ich habe eine Reise nach San Francisco im Jahr 2012 mit meiner Freundin zu der Zeit. Es war ein wundervoller Besuch.
Wir leben in Südkalifornien und fuhren dort und zurück. Die interessante Sache ist, dass sie vor kurzem von einem Jahr in Deutschland im Programm "Study Abroad" zurückgekehrt war. Sie beendete ihr Diplom in Südkalifornien und die Reise war ein Geschenk von ihrer Mutter.
Obwohl wir nicht mehr zusammen sind, bringen Videos wie diese gute Erinnerungen zurück.
Ich spreche oder schreibe nicht deutsch .... ich habe Google Translate dazu benutzt.

I thought Americans are safety conscious on the road. I never imagined that some would dare to just hang by the side of the cable car (just like in India or other Asian countries). Also no seatbelts...oh well, the feel of the wind on your hair 😁

Ja, auf der California-Line gibt es keine Wendestellen. Diese liegt topografisch nicht so reizvoll wie die beiden anderen Strecken und es fahren dort auch weniger Bahnen. Ich habe vor meinem Besuch auch weniger von diesen ZR-Wagen Notiz genommen :=

That's a cable car, not a trolley and you are allowed to pass them in some situations.

A cable car has tracks and an underground cable, A street car has power wires attached to the top of the cars. A trolley has wheels and a gas or electric motor.

Excellent and very good video. I must say in this day of 'Health & Safety' going OTT on everything I thought it rather amusing that the crew wore these stupid reflective jackets, but at the same time let passengers ride on the 'running boards' - (as we in the UK call them) - with one hand busy taking 'selfies' and filming in general. Out of interest where do they get the power from for the lights at night.?

Haben die Cable Car Linien wirklich das Monopol auf ihren Strecken oder gibt es parallel betriebene Buslinien? Gibt es auch offizielle zustiegs bzw. Haltestellen auf der Strecke oder ist das eher ein halten auf Zuruf?

Hehe, naja...das Cablecarfahren gehört wohl zum Grundprogramm in dieser Stdt einfach für jeden Touri dazu! ;-) Macht auf diesen Karren ja auch echt Laune! Also auf den Cablecarlinien fährt meines Wissen nichts anderes...was auch sinnvoll ist, denn diese Berge waren der Grund um dort diese Strecken noch zu erhalten! Es fahren ja zwischendurch auch Einheimische mit...man merkst gut bei der stattfindenden Routine mancher Menschen, gerade was das zu-/absteigen betrifft. Haltestellen gibts an jeder Querstarße, dort siehst Du im Video auch die blauen (oft ausgeblichenen) Schilder...also dort, wo der Wagen mal gerade zum stehen kommt. Wenn niemand dort steht, wird durchgefahren! Aussteigen kannst du, wenn du dem Fahrer oder dem Bremser mal "next stop please" zurufst...wenn du das vom Trittbrett aus tust rollt der Wagen auch langsam durch und du springst elegant ab! :-)

Wird das Verbindungsgleis von er California Linie Richtung Norden überhaupt genützt?,
Wenn ja kommt die dann der anderen Kalebstraßenbahn in den Weg.
Das ist Dienststrecke und wird morgens und abends zum ein-/ausrücken ins Depot genutzt.

So how does it work?
They are pulled along the route by way of a steel Cable under the street , they grip tightly onto the Cable and it drags them down the street then when the operator known as the Gripman stops the car they release the Cable and apply the brake. The cable cars can only stop on a flat part of a street because if the release the Cable on a hill then they won't be able to grab it again due to the extreme angle.

Why don't they engine brake on declines. Well, cable brake. It seems pointless to wear out the service brakes.
On steep declines they clamp onto the cable, apply the track brakes (pine blocks) and drag it downhill. If the brakes are applied hard enough the wheels lift right off the track. It is much safer that way.

oh...it was expensive...8 Dollars maybe? I dont remember now after this months. but it was possible to buy a week-ticket...there are all inclusive. I think it was 60-80 Dollars.

Was ich nicht begreife ist was der Gripman an einer Kreuzung machen muss, damit er das kreuzende Seil nicht abreißt...
Das habe ich auch vor Ort erst richtig begreifen können. Es ist so, dass an der kreuzung jeweils nur ein Seilsystem durchgehend genutzt werden kann...das andere verläuft darunter hindurch und der daran "hängende" Wagen muss dieses für die Passage der Kreuzung loslassen. Schaue mal im Video an die Stelle 29:10 min: Dort kommt der Wagen die Steigung hinauf und kreuzt gleich die California-Line. Etwa zur Minute 29:15 wird das Seil losgelassen und der Wagen rollt durch seine Masse einfach weiter und über die Kreuzung darüber. Diese Stelle ist per Aufsicht Ampelgesteuert und wird für die rollenden Wagen auf grün geschalten. In die Richtung im Video ist ein Wiederaufgreifen des Seils nicht notwendig...es geht bergab und im Tal wird das neue Seilsystem aufgegriffen. In Gegenrichtung sieht es anders aus - in der Szene ab 29:30 rollt ein Wagen wieder ohne Seilzug über die Kreuzung (kurz davor losgelassen)...die Kralle unter dem Wagen ist somit etwas höher als das querende Seil und gleich nach der Kreuzung durchrollt der Wagen eine leichte Senke, bevor der Berg nach unten beginnt. In der Senke kommt die Kralle unter dem Wagen wieder kurz auf Seilposition und dort kann dieses wieder "aufgekrallt" werden. Ich hoffe, dass dies etwas verständlich rübergekommen ist. :-)

@@herrfuggs7803 Das weiss ich nicht...dann wird es sicher ein kleines Problem geben. Auf jeden Fall habe ich noch in Erinnerung, dass die Fahrschule für die Cablecars sehr schwierig sein soll. Ich denke dass auf dem kleinen Netz die Handgriffe schon sehr gut sitzen.
