As a black woman who has been cornrowing my own hair since I was 8, I appreciate you for this video. And putting the head in the lap IS how we all got our hair braided as kids. Brad, you are amazing for a beginner braider.
I keep on seeing these comments of "I been braiding since I was 8" or "since I was 7"... yo!! Thats amazing. Im 22 and still cant braid my hair for shit💀💀this is sad😭😭
My head stayed in my mama lap getting my hair done and that's how I braid my daughter hair. When you don't have chairs the move up and down, that's how it's done
@@liso_lethu You just gotta practice and understand that it's ugly before it gets cute. I started braiding/twisting at like 9 or 10 but back then my work was messy, uneven and ugly tbh. It got better with time and now my braids and twists look professional
i fell asleep in my moms lap a lot when younger…felt like braiding me to sleep😂
I think that's why I have a bad neck because my mom used to bend my neck in different positions to braid my hair and I had really thick and long hair
Brad, the head in lap method is literally how many of us grew up getting our hair braided. That it was intuitive to you is impressive!
At least he was gentle. Mom would bend my head at all kinds of angles while "resting" my head on her lap. Neck be hurting like crazy 😂
I'm not black, but when he put the head in his lap it definitely seemed like something moms would do when braiding their kids' hair! It seems like the easiest angle!
It may just be human instinct lol
Facts, I've laid in a many of laps lol
I'm mixed with thick curly hair and anyone that normally did my hair either did it in their lap twisting my head every which way. Even when I sat in a chair to get my hair done they still had me move my head with them. While I can braid a little I still need a lot of practice. I'm working on it a little bit at a time
I’m a black stylist and I love the fact that you acknowledge that braiding is a specialty that a lot of black stylist are known for when I got board with traditional black hair styling techniques I went into color and realized it to is very hard and challenging. You can get better at braids if you practice just like I got better with color as I practiced.
When I saw "world's most complicated braids" I wasn't expecting to see our everyday Nigerian hairstyles 😂
But I remember learning to braid at 11 and i can say that this guy did a great job
Traditional Nigerian stop the lying those are definitely black American patterns that were done. I’ve never seen Africans with those kind of designs in their hair.
Exactly, hairstyles we made to secondary school 😂
@@susannaholubiyi6147 Yesssssss 😂😂
@@jubilantmornings8492 YOU have never seen an African with those styles, black Americans are African Americans, Nigerian is African. These are African styles whether they are African American or Nigerian or any other type of African. Africans can’t “steal” hair from Africans.
@@jubilantmornings8492 I agree African Americans have created amazing braiding styles but so many of these patterns were created by Africans and are originally Africans so i don’t know why you are really upset
So glad your willing to learn how to do black hairstyles! While it’s important for hair stylists to be able to work with all hair types, many of them don’t know how to do black hairstyles unless they themselves are black. Kudos to you, Brad!
I highly agree with this comment but I have to point out even though this style is very popular amongst the black race this is called a braiding technique not black hairstyle. Anyone can braid. All it takes is patience and practice 💚
@@donisa808 Ah, sorry! I wasn’t sure exactly how to word it 😥
@@donisa808 a lot of people assume only black people can wear braids but I’ve seen a lot of people who aren’t black wearing them and they look pretty

Same. I started as a preteen and finally just branched into doing other peoples’ hair but I loved that he tried! Great work!
He did very good 😊
As a white woman that committed to learning how to do my girl's hair, I was absolutely dying. Yeeaahhh, not something you learn in a day. Definitely not something your hands learn in a day either.
You made me feel so talented 😂I’m black & I braid my own hair overhand cornrows, box braids etc. But you did wayyyy better than most for your first try

Brad I appreciate you venturing on the side of hair that you’re not good at just to showcase ALL hair types and styles. Just makes me love you that much more
Thanks for featuring my video! I will say braiding on a real scalp is significantly easier than doing so on a mannequin. You did well!
Love you GlamFam!!!!!!!!!
And Brad Omg your finger placement at 5:50 is EXACTLY how it should be. Keep doing that and you'll be a pro!!

Exactly!
Yes indeed! Head on the lap is the way to go. You spend your saturday eating, sleeping and watching tv with one side laid on momma's lap!
That's the way I started out braiding my daughter's hair (biracial). It ain't easy to learn. Takes practice. Great to see you spread your wings and try!
I thought for a second that you meant people would take off your head to braid it, but putting your head in a lap makes a lot more sense
@@rosecohen6597LOL 😂
i want a series where brad learns to braid and we see him growing and getting better and better.
I’m Definitely here for that!
Yes please!!!
As an African braider learning how to braid was quiet easy.Started braiding since I was 6. You did good for starters but you need to remove any doubt about not getting it right. Try placing the mannequin in between your thighs to get a firm grip. I could teach you if I were there. Goodluck.
I learned how to do cornrows when I worked at a daycare center a long time ago we had a little girl she was 3 years old and her mom had passed away. She had a single dad that raised her and he had no idea how to braid her hair. One of the women I worked with showed me how to cornrow. He would bring her in early sometimes and I would cornrow her hair for her. To me it was very similar to doing French braids and I learned extremely quickly. This was about 20 yrs ago. What an adorable sweet little girl. I wonder what she grew up to be.
You got this Brad!
Awwww Michelle you are an amazing woman, I'm sure she remembers you and grew up to be a wonderful person.
This is so sweet
What a wonderful story❤️I'm sure she remembers youxx
I’ve always appreciated that Brad has acknowledged how minimal education in styling black hair is, and how few hairdressers are knowledgeable in this
I appreciate him taking a video to show himself trying to learn some techniques and though he’s a *hair* colorist I’d love to see if he continues practicing and shows improvement 🥰
He’s a colorist? What he do?

This is why as black people we need to support our braiders by paying them their worth, it is truly a talent that we take for granted. It should not be the cheapest style, it takes time and effort. I'm not mad at the stylist now charging £100-200 for box braids. Also he did so well to be honest!
Girll..those are prices from 2005 lol. I wish those were the prices near me. Shoulder length no designs medium size maybe 200. They charging around 300+ up for a basic style

You can never be tired of Brad's videos.
I love the willingness to learn. Is there a chance we could get a series with you featuring natural hair stylists? That way, you can learn and so can your viewers who might not have experience dealing with black hair.
Wonderful idea. I hope he sees this and considers it.
I love this idea!
I would love to see a collab between Brad and VivHairTherapy. They are both so positive and high energy.
I would love to see you colab with @GlamFam Hair because he’s hair instructor at a college.?

As a black women this video makes me filled with joy. I'm just happy that as a hair stylist you realize this is a difficult and beautiful process that all black people learn to specialize in. Your attempt on that mannequin head isn't unlike how any of us started. I started to practice on dolls before braiding all of my older, I can guarantee you'll be better the next time. 😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yeah I didn’t not know it was that difficult to do, seriously impressive!
@@arielasaro7300 it’s not difficult to do AT ALL 😂😂 trust me I started doing hair at 5
one of my classmates has a crossing cornrow and a heart cornrow in the same hairstyle and I cant even imagine how long that took. The sheer amount of patience and pain tolerance required to get those braids done never ceases to amaze me.
You have to love Brad's refusal to back down from a challenge. We should all push ourselves to learn to do hard things. Great attitude!

Many will overlook those comments and Brad started highlighting and learning more… thanks for growing.
yes, even though he has much to learn, i’ve been enjoying these natural hair vids !
Beauty schools should definitely go more in-depth when it comes to catering to ethnic hair, it sucks that as a woman of color I can’t go into any salon and get a basic service done without worrying about my hair being damaged, I hope to see this change, everyone deserves to be serviced no matter what type of hair they’re born with and every stylist should be able to cater to them in some way and I appreciate that you tried it’s not easy at all which is even more of a reason it should be incorporated into beauty schools.
I’m pretty sure most beauty schools do that now Brad did go to school long time ago
I love that you’re learning and exploring so respectfully. This video is funny and so real 😂. Learning these braiding techniques is hard and takes time!
Yeah but we have been doing it so long so we just have those skills lol

@@rediettadesse2828 Yes?
I'm white but i learned how to braid on my bf. He has 4c hair and let me tell you, this is a second job! hahaha! But what really helped me to make my braids look neat is hair grease or very stong hold gel. It makes it easier to keep sections in place and helps to prevent slipping. But i am in no way as good as the girl in the video!! 🤪
@@rediettadesse2828 A french or running braid is a braid that gathers sections of hair as it goes along as opposed to a plain braid which starts with all the hair and is parted with all of them from the start. Pippi Longstocking has a plain braid. Corn rows are essentially many, many french braids, but I am pretty sure we learned them from black women. White hair is just a hell of a lot harder to cornrow thanks to the finer and more slippery texture.
i love that im not alone in saying i have so much admiration and respect for this skillset. i always find myself absolutely hypnotized by the precision and crisp line work on tiktok videos and general content like this. the history behind the styles, the culture, and the learning experience i get in watching these artists kill it is absolutely mind boggling and so fkn cool. i love this!

Just letting you know, it's super common for moms to have their kid sit on the floor while mom is in a chair so the head would be literally between their legs to braid lol. For me, it wasn't even just my mom who did this. Some pros did too! As we get older, we go into the chair but the hairdresser still manipulates our head position a LOT. Just like when you shoved the mannequin's head downward before putting in in your lap!
Right?!? Growing up my mom and sister would turn my head this way and that. Head position is SO important. And if I got squirrelly, a well time smack with the brush reminded me who was doing whose hair 😆😂😆😂
@@tonieundertwenty Lord I remember getting popped with the comb or brush too when I wouldn’t sit still.

Definitely gentleness is key, but it's really good for a stylist to manipulate their client's head, because it can save the stylist a lot of pain down the road. If the stylist puts their body in uncomfortable angles to reach the client for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, they could injure their wrist or back in a way that can cut their career short.
I love the fact that when he’s doing styles he knows came from black culture he acknowledges it. We don’t care if y’all do it but too many like to culture appropriate and then act all shocked when the people of the culture they’re disrespecting gets angry.

Just the fact that you’re trying is major for me. As stylists we have to be as versatile as possible to accommodate all hair and skin types. 🥰
Just by watching this video, I can tell you are an immaculate hair dresser. I think what made me fall in love with your channel is your willingness to incorporate every one and that is really beautiful to me. You are extremely talented. And PS braiding on a manikin is like the hardest ish ever 😂
the skill level and patience is incredible. i can’t even french braid my own hair without my arms getting tired and usually i just give up.

French braid is cornrows
It's less tiring to do on someone else's head! I thought stylists were just saying that to make me feel better, but when I learned how to do a blow out, it was sooooo much easier to do to someone else than to me lol.
You did really well. The mannequin hair is thin so there are a lot of gaps making the part not as crisp. You cant help that. It looks good!
@HIBA TV will u quit already?!
Speaking as a life long braiding enthusiast - started out braiding each others waist length hair into box braids for the summer- i find curls way easier to braid than straight hair. I have no idea how to add an extension but it looks like fun! Straight hair- the hair, not the person- LOOKS LIKE it would be easier because its sleek and soft looking but really? Curly hair takes braids easier. The tighter the curls, the tighter the braids! I find it just grips itself better and makes the hair itself easier to hold. Getting tight cornrows on naturally straight hair is HARD!
The confidence kept being on 10🤣 and I kept faith in you the whole time. Good job on the heart. It's so great to see someone not afraid to fail. Very enjoyable.
The head in lap method is what my mom used when I was a kid. Your braids didn’t turn out bad for a beginner. I’ve been braiding since I was about 8 or 9 years old, and I’m still not that great at zigzags and hearts. Keep practicing. You could be great at it.
Brad, you reminded me of my mother, when she used to cornrow my hair every morning, before I went to school. I was in 6th grade. I used to put my head in her lap, as I felt her little fingers braiding away; it was so relaxing, I almost went back to sleep. All the other boys were jealous cuz my mother braided my hair so beautifully. When I combed out those braids, I would have a killa AFRO! :) I'm 59 years old & now I shave my scalp every month. If I still had my afro, I would love to let you braid my hair. You did very well on the mannequin. Please don't get discouraged; these braiding pros have been braiding for YEARS!! They didn't just start braiding over night. Please keep up the great work.
The most beautiful I've done to mine or other people's hair has been just the easy single braids, "box braids" and that is it. For a beginner you're already more advanced than I am. More practice and you'll be killing that shit in no time. Love you❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

I’d love to see you do a “Black hair 101” video - interview someone who can explain the history of Black hairstyles and then get a tutorial from a stylist on how to do the most common styles. That would be so informative!
I love how he wants so bad to braid over handed but keeps going back to under handed. Either is great and has its advantages and disadvantages! ❤️❤️❤️Way to go!
Tip for grip: make sure you’re grabbing the hair close to 90 degrees from the scalp. But not too tight. Also try not to slide your hands through the hair, it’s a pick up game mostly, Thank you for being so culturally appreciating and respectful! You did pretty amazing for a starting point. ❤️❤️❤️

Kudos for stepping out of your comfort zone. And then doing it publicly takes no small amount of bravery. So many of us assume the stuff we see people in tutorials do should be easy because they're so expert at it. It's good to be reminded that this expertise took a lot of practice
As a black girl, I appreciate you for how you react to our braids. We need more people like you❤
Please continue to spread this energy. So many white stylists to not care to know what to do with our hair
Having learned how to do cornrows for my daughter's hair, it did take LOTS of practice! Definitely the part-lines are super crucial. You did great for never having done it before! My daughter prefers a mohawk fro thesr days and hasn't let me cornrow her hair in years, so mine wouldn't look very good anymore either 😆
Brad was really ambitious. He went from trying intro to attempting AP classes in less than a minute.
Like seriously Brad, so much respect for you trying this out and opening your horizons.
Brad you did great! 😃 Loved this video so much I am mixed race with curly hair & it made me so happy to see you explore hairstyles for different hair textures along with your eagerness to learn something new to you it was very entertaining & funny too! 😄 We would love to see more braiding videos from you! 💗 love you & your channel!
Now we know why the black community pays so much to do their hair. At school, my partner was black. She hated working on my hair, said it was too slippery. On the other hand, I loved working on her hair. I learned how to do some great updos & managed to master a beautiful box braid. But some of these styles are on a whole new level. Kudos to their amazing creativity.
The hand spasm I’ve gotten while braiding hair is no joke
Right! I stop braiding just because of that and the cramping.
my weak ass fingers and arms start violently shaking doing a fkn relaxed french braid 😭😭
I got carpal tunnel in my early 20s I can’t braid really small intricate stuff anymore, it hurts and I don’t have the patience.😂
Yep those hand cramps really are something
I swear braiding hair is literally a TALENT- like I can barely do a Dutch braids and people are out there doing heart and patterns with braids like how!?
Became a beautician in the 80's. I loved to cut and perm hair. Sometimes it took up to three hours to just wrap hair when the spiral hairband perms were popular. Only type of braid that I knew how to do was french braid. There is absolutely no way I could do these braids, even when I was young and had nimble fingers. I am just in such aww when I watch these braiding youtube videos. So, so much talent and PATIENCE you need to achieve this.
Your effort is so cute, also you didn’t do that bad, so relax ❤️
I think so too! But I know our community can be a lil harsh and sensitive about other ppl trying to do styles we created, so, I don't blame him for being a little nervous. He did better than me for sure lol
I find it utterly baffling and amazing how anyone has the patience to braid their hair like that. It probably takes hours to do well!
Yes it does
Sometimes days
I think its really expensive to have done too
@@CourtezHill Doesn't it hurt y'all's heads?? 😖 It looks great, but *painful* . My mom put two braids, or a two ponytails, in my hair and my head hurt. I can't imagine it being pulled that close to the scalp all the time.
@@jilltheprivateinvestigator3328 it depends on who does it and how much they like you! 🤣🤣
I really appreciate you trying to learn this, Don't get too frustrated when you need up, just keep practising and you'll get there
Seeing how appreciative and encouraging all of the melanin queens are being towards Brad in the comment section makes me happy! It's beautiful to see.
I love the fact that you’re willing to “not know.” That alone is the sign of a true professional. Braiding is an art form, and with 9000 more hours of practice, you’ll be an expert.;-)
The first one was not that bad… it really could’ve been worse…. Great effort 👏👏
This is so adorable. I love the effort!!❤❤
I love your honesty.
When I was in school in cosmetology, everyone started with hair styles (braids, roller sets and etc.). I loved to try out so many braids and different ways to do braids. I was 1 white student willing to perfect and practice my craft in Dutch braiding and cornrows from the start to finish of my schooling, I was so happy that I finally got it down and others were happy for me as well. But a real head is better to do cornrows on, but it can be an all day affair, but so far my quickest time was 7 hours to finish a head. What I learned to do was use a lot of hair gel on the roots and grip the root to control and keep hold of the strands. YES! You are doing great if you have never done this.
I appreciate the fact that you try to learn braiding of another culture. I respect your respect for my people. Notes: for cornrows it helps if you watch someone do it on someone else because the hand placement is different then if you’re doing it on yourself
My mom, my brother and I took classes because he has a half black daughter. We want her to be proud of her beautiful hair and knowing how to make it look good is a huge part of that. And yes, his wife said to watch someone do it on someone else and it REALLY helped me learn the hand placement. It’s a majorly important skill that is so rarely talked about.
I agree. It's a different learning experience!
My sister did these for the first time and wanted to try them on me they looked beautiful she did feed-ins, heart, cross and Fulani all for the FIRST time
I also have to say for this guys first time as well he did really well
I thought you did very well!! I appreciate you trying! I appreciate you attempting to learn this skill & sharing the complexity & beauty in braiding. Thanks for sharing!
