  • This is my test of a Stessle rat pack or 3.00hd with a 9.8hp Tohatsu.
The boat topped out on the gps at 42kph. The hull performed well and remained very level through the turns due to only a very slight v hull at the transom. Also with a hull of only 3m long I was expecting some sort of porpoise (when the boat bounced up and down while on the plane) but encountered no porpoise at all. The tinny felt safe and open and with nice high sides considering it's a short shaft outboard hull.
The 9.8hp Tohatsu performed as expected, fantastic! At only 25kgs it is the most powerful easily transportable outboard on the market.
I have been boating my whole life, raced boats, built boats, rebuilt so many outboards it's not funny and owned over 150 outboards and so many boats as well. I love boat hull design, propeller design and performance and if I am floating I'm happy!

    What pitch prop?

The transom can hold up to a 15hp outboard

G'day mate. Nice run with the 9.8hp on the 3m Stessl Rat Pack. I was considering getting a 3.3m SeaCraft 330 Ranger, and putting a 9.8 Tohatsu on the back. The max hp is 6hp, but the transom can handle up to 35kgs. Do you think that is doable? If so, What would you approximate for a top speed? Ta mate, Dimitri

The ranger would be fine with the weight, the 9.8hp two stroke weighs the same as the 6hp. The 9.8 does have a lot more power so the boat may need some extra bracing. The other concern will be that it is rated for max 6hp and the waterways and water police are getting strict on exceeding manufacturers max hp ratings.
The manufacturers set the max hp rating not only on how strong the boat is but also it’s safety, it may be that any faster than a 6hp pushes the boat something unsafe starts occurring like porpoising or digging an edge when turning etc.
You may be able to call SeaCraft to discuss if you can buy one that is rated to 9.8hp or discuss there thoughts.
I do think it would fly with the 9.8hp being lightweight and flat bottom.
      Cheers,
      Aussie Boat Guy 👍

Hi dose the motor flick up when you go fast in reverse

      Hi Mate,
No it doesn’t, if your motor is doing that you need to check the revers lock that locks onto the trim pin.
      Cheers 🍻

Hi! What does that motor weigh? I can’t find any information about it...

    • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  Před 4 lety +6

      Hi mate,
      The motor weighs just 26kgs.
      169cc two cylinder two stroke.
2.08 to 1 gear ratio and standard prop is about an 8.5 pitch.
Operating range 5000 to 6000 rpm.
I love these little motors, they pack a punch for such a light motor, same block and leg as the 6hp but with high compression head big carburetor and a few other things to get the other 3.8hp
      Cheers,
      Glenno

@@25hpboatracerman 8.5 pitch is way to much for a 9.8 on a ratpack should be running like a 7 at the most that was why it was cavitating so much and it will get on plane much easier if you go down a pitch or two, i run a 9 pitch on my 18 tohatsu on a ratpack and its perfect

    • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  Před 2 lety +1

      😂 it’s not cavitating at all ???
Your 18hp tohatsu has a 1.85 to 1 gear ratio, The 9.8hp has a 2.08 to 1 ratio so you can’t really compare what prop Is on your 18hp compared to the 9.8hp unless they had the same gear ratio, which they don’t.
So 8.5 pitch worked very well on the 9.8 on that boat. The correct Way to see what pitch prop is by checking maximum RPM is within specs. The 9.8hp was reaching max rpm with the 8.5p prop and hole shot was good.
I have run an 18hp tohatsu on that boat and was able to run a 10p with no issues at all and run at full throttle and reach max recommended rpm with no issue.
If you like womping then the 9p might be the go but top speed is compromised for sure and max rpm will be above recommend range too.
My 18hp did a genuine 55kph gps on that boat.
      👍👍👍👍

@@25hpboatracerman 2:35 i thought i heard it cavitate when you were turning around, i had a 6hp tohatsu before the 18 and was running a 7 pitch i think and it still cavitated way too much, your probably right but i would have thought that 8.5 pitch is to much, i have tried running a 10 pitch with the 18 and could barely get on plane so i dont mind compromising the extra 5kmph i got with the 10 pitch, i get 57kmph with the 9 pitch but my hull is a makocraft ratpack and weighs a bit less.

A new 5hp four stroke weighs around 24kg so you are getting half the power for the same weight as the 9.8hp Tohatsu 2 stroke.. Not sure that is progress.

    • @25hpboatracerman

      My thoughts exactly mate.
I love the 9.8hp tohatsu, I’ve owned about 4 of them.
I have one now and feel I will hold onto it as no more new two stroke outboards for sale in Australia (of course second hand ones are still available but I feel they may increase in value or become harder to find)
      Cheers

@@25hpboatracerman I literally just bought a brand new one here in Malaysia. Haven't even started it yet. It will be a kicker motor for a 26ft trailer-sailer and the powerplant for a 3.3 meter dinghy. Everyone kept telling me to keep the 15 hp Yamaha I sold as a kicker with my 200 motorboat but that thing is HEAVY. A serious struggle to lug it around, I think it's about 41kg with oil etc. I think this little beauty will be a lot easier to manage getting on or off the dinghy/motormount while at sea. Glad to hear your positive view of them as an actual owner :)
