Dude, I freaking love this video. It really does a good job of showing the difficulties of the career in a fun down to Earth way.
I remember one time I bid a trip to JFK cause I was gonna get a 15 hour layover in Jersey City at a hotel I like right in downtown. Well it turns out they changed it for one in front of the Jersey Gardens mall. On top of that, it was rush hour and took us 2 hours to get there to cross Manhattan to get there. The morning was the same with traffic. In the end, the layover ended up being only 11 hours (100% legal minimal rest). I was so pissed just like the poor guy! XD
I never bid another 15 hour layover again! 😂

Same, every time I fly, I can’t sleep because I have to make sure I wake up 3 hours early to beat traffic and lines. And it’s also a mix of anxiety and excitement. And I literally feel like a zombie while traveling until I get to the hotel.
I remember only getting 2 hrs of sleep when I flew to Hawaii. Then when we got to our place, we weren’t allowed to check in yet. We had to wait 2 hours outside to check in. And we had groceries with dairy. I just wanted to sleep. But my aunt wanted to start exploring already 😅 she’s the only one who got enough sleep. A good 7 hrs.

Denys, thanks for sharing this with us. It's always fun seeing others work humor. I found your reactions very funny. Some of the radio chatter can be very funny. While flying with a friend we were diverted because of some military "Shenanigans" (this was the actual word used on the radio) when some F-16's were in our area. It must be fun! Boys and their toys.

the funny thing with “rest period” is its based on how much money the airline will lose the longer you stay on the ground. I mean, rest period starts right after chocks in. While you are literally walking yourself outside of the cabin, through immigration, and exit the airport and repo your ass on the shuttle service to your hotel, REST PERIOD has already commenced. Your drive to work already saps your energy And your duty time starts an hour and forty five minutes before departure, your rate only starts once you have sent your acars(attendance) from inside the cockpit of the aircraft. But with all the papers you have to go through (diversion airports, certificates, weather reports, notices to airmen, flight plan, etc) reporting on time would literally mean you’ll be unprepared for the flight. Then you get the f*king jet lag. Today you fly to a +3 utc, four days later, you are back home to a +9 utc with one day off only to fly the following day a 16 hour flight to a -5 utc. You haven’t even recovered from the jetlag from your previous flight, you are already battling a 16 hour shift. And, the most important part, every 6 months, we undergo proficiency checks where literally our jobs are at risk. The test involves a series of ‘’god says fuck you’’ type of events in a span of 2 hours. During your day offs, you also have to answer to emails and you also have to do computer based trainings which have exams btw. Each enrolment have exams at the end of the lesson, you fail those exams, you get grounded with no pay. You need a different type of mentality to get yourself in to this kind of profession. Pursuit of money is not enough to get you to stay in it. Its not the most difficult job or the most dangerous, but it’s a damn pretty hard job for sure.

    Hello enys:)!
Very enjoyable video:)! I can definitely relate to some of what is presented here, though I was a Flight Attendant instead of a Pilot. As you say, many things related to working hours are controlled either by the country your carrier is based out o, or by your negotiated contract. One thing that you didn't explain was what "Duty Time" is compared to "Flight Time." Still, I know exactly what you mean by each of those:). Also, one thing the video failed to mention is the random "Drug Screenings" that often go along with international flights. They can eat away at your time off as well. In general, though, the video was very interesting and funny:)! Thanks or sharing it with all of us, and I wish you and your family an awesome week:)!

In EASA (Europe) rest time is the same as previous duty time or 10 hours whichever is greater. I can't imagine how good it would be if our rest time was twice as much as duty time, but fortunately it is not and many pilots operate even night duties of over 10-12 hours with only just enough time to get to the hotel, have some food, sleep and go back to work.

Here in Mexico, I live about an hour away from the AICM (Mexico City's International Airport), and there's a hotel near my house. I've seen multiple times how some airplane crews arrive at that hotel, and I have always thought that it must be extremely annoying for them to be so far from the airport, especially since, during peak hours, the traffic from the hotel to the AICM can take around 2 or even 3 hours. The only good thing is that it is a very comfortable 4-star hotel.

Professions like that of airline pilots hold a special glamour in people's imaginations. They are associated with intelligence, boldness, attractiveness, and courage. In short, there is an image of all things good. Pilots tend to be vain about the type and size of the planes they operate, the uniforms they wear, and the positive perceptions people have of them. Movies like Top Gun and others have greatly contributed to building this image. Employers are well aware of this, and in my view, this is a huge disadvantage because many of us overvalue the profession as if it only had advantages and is a wonderful life: beautiful women and men, luxurious hotels, outings, and basically paid vacations, which is far from the truth. Employers know this very well and masterfully exploit this vanity and our profession, which is just a grand illusion. By the way, I've been a pilot for 30 years, 26 of those as an airline pilot, and this is not just an opinion but a conclusion from someone who lives and observes the reality of the profession from the inside. What I see is the quality of work only decreasing since 1998.

I think it would be interesting to talk about psychotherapy and pilots. I'm not in the buisness of being a pilot yet. But it feels like psychotherapy is a very harmful thing for your medical certificate. It's kind of paradox. If someone goes to therapy, most people think that he or she must have a mental illness. But that's not always the case. Sometimes a loved one dies or other tragic events happen. If pilots are "scared" to go to therapy, when they have encountered a tragic situation in their life, it will definitely affect their work quality and probably perform worse. And it might be even more dangerous because they might be thinking about something else while flying and having lots of passengers lives in their hands. It's paradox because going to therapy looks like someone is ill, but if they don't go to therapy and they have an "illness", but hide it, it will be even worse. But keep in mind I don't know how true it is what I wrote. It's just something I feel like observed. Maybe I'm totally wrong.

Dude, in low fair airlines like Ryanair you pay for everything theese days. Except maybe the bolier water. The cabin crew brings their own drinks and that's how you can have a 'free' coffe.

I know that pilots fill out flight logs. When the FO was talking under 10K feet did you mention it in the flight log? It seems like a difficult decision because if you log it you can be seen as a 'whistle blower'.

Adding the unpaid hours commuting, dealing with parking lots, airline terminal BS, showing at least an hour before the flight, waiting, etc severely degrades the hourly rate. This is even at a US major.

About duty times talking from short haul side- rest time is atleast 10 h or the same time as the duty if its longer.

P.s. Sometimes short nightstops are so short, that it makes sense to stay in the aircraft than to drive to the hotel.

3:25 they do random checks on inflight crew because smuggling. Some people abuse their privileges and smuggle drugs. It has happened numerous times on international flights to or from the States . It has even happened in the states on domestic flights.
