When she sang You Raise Me Up, she struggled with pneumonia for a long time and tried to stop singing, but she couldn't cancel her appearance on an important broadcast that had already been promised, so she decided to stop singing after finishing the stage despite her worst physical condition and sang incredibly hard on the air. Since then, she has stopped appearing on the air for about two years.
I just remembered something Sohyang said in an interview about when she was doing the "King of the Masked Singers" series in 2017. She had to go through around 400 different songs in order to find the next one that was appropriate for her abilities. Since she won the program six times in a row, and sorted through 400 songs _each and every week,_ that is basically two and half _thousand_ songs to find those six that made her the absolute champion! Then she had a concert in the US that she had to perform so she sang the "Day Day" rap song, which people have thought was her way of getting off the merry-go-round of the grinding work to appear that many times and win it that many times. Here is something else Richard and Johnny, Sohyang says that when she was doing the "Begin Again Korea" busking program in 2020, the one where she sang "Misty," she only had about 30% of her normal voice left after fighting pneumonia eight different times from 2016 through to her appearance busking. We don't know where this tiny 5 foot 4 inch, 100 pound woman gets the energy to sing like that and persevere! I have been flabbergasted by Sohyang so many times that I can only conclude she is special to God and that He helps her out whenever she needs it. Sohyang's rendition of "You Raise Me Up" is her vocalizing her faith and surrendering all she has on that stage to bring comfort to others, a mission she takes rather seriously even when she is not feeling too well herself.
What's great about Sohyang's interpretation of "I Will Always Love You" is how effortless and sincere it is---you can tell Sohyang really means the words she is singing there.
"Sohyang - Everyone" - If you look closely at the lyrics of this song, you can see that Sohyang's life and confession of faith are all contained. God, who cured cancer and gave a new life that he had visited in her early 20s, and Sohyang, who decided to sing for him for the rest of her life. So, the emotions contained in this song are the true feelings of Sohyang, so even those who listen to the song can feel the emotions as they are if they are immersed a little bit, so they have no choice but to shed tears. As a side note, this song is also one of Sohyang's most difficult songs to sing due to its 7-minute length and extreme singing technique and difficulty, so it has actually only been sung and performed on stage once so far in the video. The audience in the video are the luckiest people in Korea to hear this song live.
Gentlemen, somehow I missed this episode, but I just wanted to make a couple of Comments about "I Will Always Love You'. Superfluous or not, I have to talk about Sohyang. Here, on a wharf, sitting on a folding chair with the wind blowing in her hair and into her microphone, this lovely and humble lady delivers a flawless rendition of a song that her predecessors recorded in a Studio. Having few instruments available on the dock, she sings the Saxophone solo and then proceeds to warm the hearts of everyone who has the privilege of hearing her perform this classic song. So is Sohyang. She has been given a voice that can only be compared to a Stradivarius violin and she has learned to render it as she is, as a Virtuoso. Her genius as a musician is only exceeded by the beauty of her presence and of her gentle spirit. Cheers.

Some time prior to that event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from her latest bout with severe pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, around the same time she was experiencing vocal cord issues, and thought her singing career was over. She wanted to sing one last time. After this event, she disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020. Fast forward to 2024, not only is So Hyang aging in reverse, she is sounding better than ever, if that's even possible. Her range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE.

As you get to know more about So Hyang, you will find out she is a fighter and a tuff cookie. I believe she has had around 8 to 10 bouts of pneumonia and still performs alot while sick. She does not want to disappoint her fans. People do notice when she sings sick, she will change up her arrangements to not put too much stress on her lungs. It's a bit toned down versions compared to her normal phenomenal high belting but still sounds amazing. Enjoyed your reaction. Take care.
This was the last song she sang before going on a Holiday to the USA to visit her sister and contemplate whether she would go on singing or quit! During the trip she went to Philadelphian were she read a quote from former President Roosevelt “All we have to fear is fear itself”She thought on that for several days and felt it was a message from God , that she must go on , JHe always has he back! She went home in short order and signed up to enter KOMS( King of Masked Singer) during which she set a record by winning 7 segments in a row , finally listing on 8 ( though there were strong rumours she ask to be let go as she had previous commitments, as she didn’t thing she would be on the show so long:-) later she said the response of the audience’s convinced her she was reaching them , whenever she looked up someone was crying and all very Happy by the songs end ! All the songs from that series are Gold, even the one she lost on”Day,Day” a rap song of sorts ! There only this and one other Performance I know for sure! But she had to cancel several times and that killed her, knowing she might be let someone done , that need to hear word of encouragement, she would deliver. Richard and Johnny, I've watched Sohyang since about 2019 and have concluded that she has been the very best female singer on our planet since 2012. You two covered a wide array of her songs but as you can see, by 2012 she was just incomparable. I mean like, how do you beat "Oh Holy Night" or "Fate"? And here is something that will really, really blow your mind! Sohyang has only had five singing lessons in her entire life, but they were with Seth Riggs one week when she was vacationing with her husband in California in 2009 or 2010! 🤯 She only informed us of this in an interview earlier this year. We knew she had seen Seth Riggs and that he basically flipped his lid at her incredible amount of talent, but we didn't know that she only had five sessions with him. So Sohyang is an almost 100% self taught vocalist. I know, what can anyone say to that? ... I don't really even know what to say when I hear Sohyang sing. I've never heard her equal, ever. I have never even heard anyone _like_ Sohyang. I think when she was recovering from her cancer surgery at age 20 and decided with determination that she was going to dedicate her life to singing for the dispossessed and needy, that God took notice of that and was so pleased He added extra musical and singing ability to her. (That is my personal explanation because there is no one else who could have given her such talent.) Like where did this woman come from? We often joke that she is an alien from outer space somewhere. But her abilities are so far above anything we have ever heard, we enter into a mental vacuum and grope around with no reference points. It is as if we are blinded by her _absolute mastery_ of all the vocal skills a human is capable of--and way beyond that as well. Anyway, Sohyang is simply dumbfounding and that is all there is to it. 🤷♂👀👽🛸💖💖💖
I've watched almost every Sohyang reaction video...some more than once. But this Sohyang marathon is the best format by far and only scraped the surface. Loved it and looking forward to part 2 and 3. There is video of Sohyang as Maria in the sound of music. It’s really funny because in this film Sohyang is only slightly bigger than the children which shows just how tiny a person she is physically. I’m just amazed about the power she generates.

There is a performance close the time she performed this You Raise Me Up. She is singing live on a radio show. She was unable to surpress her cough all the way through. I also had the privilege of meeting both her and Morissette Amon in person. They are as sweet and kind in person as we get from seeing them in video.

Yes I agree I listen to sohyang daily she is my angel who appeared at a time in my life when I was ready to end it all please if you want to here her range listen to her k.o.m.s. dear love ( my love is the same song, for some reason a lot of people call it that and I don't know why?) but that one first. Then if u really want to herd out on vocals listen to never enough....another song she smashes and has made her own. For number 3 do breathe. Then u have an idea of what this Korean queen can do! A two-hour live video... OMG. I'm Korean and I enjoyed the video by translating it into English. The conversation between Richard and Johnny is so enjoyable and informative. Again, Richard is shedding tears many times. I also sympathize with your feelings. Please introduce Sohyang's U.S. National Anthem for NBA game (2014.03.01). I really enjoyed this long long video from your Sohyang's reaction, you reacted to most of my favorites performances from her, but you left out some of the best, Where are you (the most dramatically song sung by her from my POV) however I recommend you watch it without the public version, because during the climax appears a weird interview, and please you have to react to "Breathe" as well, the most pure, sweet and calm voice in there, thank you so much for your incredible job guys, you did an excellent job on it. Everyone is a 7+ minutes long master class in the art of how to sing amazing! Sohyang herself now beeing the super pro that she is says this was her most challegning performance due to the huge amount of breath support it requires. Ok if she says it's very challenging then i'd say it's definetely a "don't try this at home" performance!! I'm not an expert but i imagine if you do try this and don't really know what you're doing you might damage your voice.
Some songs in my playlist besides those you reacted to are: Where are you, Hug me, Dream, I’ll be there (a duet), Amazing grace, Beauty and the Beast, Higher (acoustic version), upon this rock (2022), …… Sohyang is my only favorite singer. I’m not even Korean but I really like her singing overall. She’s like an instrument when holding those notes with her amazing breath control. She’s the only singer I heard delivering high notes in a middle and the last of a phrase in one breath. Unbelievable, it’s like she doesn’t breathe. Try to react to these songs and you’ll thank me for it.

This performance of ‘you raise me up’ is 100% the performance she did while recovering from pneumonia. She shouldn’t have even been singing. Anyone familiar with sohyang can probably see that she looks tired & a little giant in the face. As a long time admirer of sohyang, imo this performance vocally is not as pristine as others, although still brilliant but obviously sohyang sets such a high bar so I am been very picky here.
In the after the show part where Shane Filan was telling her how spectacular she was, you could see that Sohyang was just beat! Not much of her usual permanent smile or bubbly personality. But she did respond with her 1000 Megawatt smile and giggles when he said he had a new version of You Raise Me Up that he was going to be playing a lot! 👀🙃💖💖💖
Childish Adult is a great one ! Jazz flavoured duet that she suits excellently ! Also ,A Thousand Days is also excellent with well known singer, composers and voice teacher for many Girl Groups in South Korea, and good friend of SoHyang, “ the One”.
You should have used subtitles to enjoy some Korean songs. And thank you for this concert making my day! It is a shame that her talent has been hidden compared to the other big names because of population or money.
Me yet again ! I have followed her for 13 years ! When I originally heard she wasn’t well for this Performance it was conveyed that she had had Pneumonia and was recently released from the Hospital! I believe it was probably maybe 5 days or so before her Performance, so she would have time do make any changes and as days went by gradually sing a little more of the song so the day before she could sing it all! She would think her Doctor was asking too much for her not to sing in show and try to go on! Her Family would have tied her down if she went from hospital to Perform! She would be determined but reasonable! Over the years people hear it differently, a little creative licence! No doubt it was still very difficult to reach this kind of Quality, vocal ! She is a Vocal Beast !! Love You SoHyang!

If you look carefully at her mouth, you will find that her tongue coating is white and the front right tongue is inflamed
"Misty" is a masterclass on vocal technique. Sohyang's version is just an incredibly pleasant experience of soft jazz.

Sohyang has only had five singing lessons in her entire life, but they were with Seth Riggs one week when she was vacationing with her husband in California in 2009 or 2010! 🤯 She only informed us of this in an interview earlier this year. We knew she had seen Seth Riggs and that he basically flipped his lid at her incredible amount of talent, but we didn't know that she only had five sessions with him. So Sohyang is an almost 100% self taught vocalist. I know, what can anyone say to that? ...
I don't really even know what to say when I hear Sohyang sing. I've never heard her equal, ever. I have never even heard anyone _like_ Sohyang. I think when she was recovering from her cancer surgery at age 20 and decided with determination that she was going to dedicate her life to singing for the dispossessed and needy, that God took notice of that and was so pleased He added extra musical and singing ability to her. (That is my personal explanation because there is no one else who could have given her such talent.) Like where did this woman come from? We often joke that she is an alien from outer space somewhere. But her abilities are so far above anything we have ever heard, we enter into a mental vacuum and grope around with no reference points. It is as if we are blinded by her _absolute mastery_ of all the vocal skills a human is capable of--and way beyond that as well. Anyway, Sohyang is simply dumbfounding and that is all there is to it. 🤷♂👀👽🛸💖💖💖
I've watched almost every Sohyang reaction video...some more than once. But this Sohyang marathon is the best format by far and only scraped the surface. Loved it and looking forward to part 2 and 3. There is a performance close the time she performed this You Raise Me Up. She is singing live on a radio show. She was unable to surpress her cough all the way through. I also had the privilege of meeting both her and Morissette Amon in person. They are as sweet and kind in person as we get from seeing them in video.
You might have become my favorite music reactors just based upon your So Hyang reactions. -- I am not sure what is happening with search, but after waiting for this video to premier on Wednesday, I couldn't find this at all with normal search terms. Only when I put the word "coach" in the search did it finally show up. Glad I found it. Yes I agree I listen to sohyang daily she is my angel who appeared at a time in my life when I was ready to end it all please if you want to here her range listen to her k.o.m.s. dear love ( my love is the same song, for some reason a lot of people call it that and I don't know why?) but that one first. Then if u really want to herd out on vocals listen to never enough....another song she smashes and has made her own. For number 3 do breathe. Then u have an idea of what this Korean queen can do! Mind you this is from a 48 yr old metal head. Everyone is a 7+ minutes long master class in the art of how to sing amazing! Sohyang herself now beeing the super pro that she is says this was her most challegning performance due to the huge amount of breath support it requires. Ok if she says it's very challenging then i'd say it's definetely a "don't try this at home" performance!! I'm not an expert but i imagine if you do try this and don't really know what you're doing you might damage your voice.

I’m not even Korean but I really like her singing overall. She’s like an instrument when holding those notes with her amazing breath control. She’s the only singer I heard delivering high notes in a middle and the last of a phrase in one breath. Unbelievable, it’s like she doesn’t breathe. Try to react to these songs and you’ll thank me for it.

This performance of ‘you raise me up’ is 100% the performance she did while recovering from pneumonia. She shouldn’t have even been singing. Anyone familiar with sohyang can probably see that she looks tired & a little giant in the face. As a long time admirer of sohyang, imo this performance vocally is not as pristine as others, although still brilliant but obviously sohyang sets such a high bar so I am been very picky here.

In the after the show part where Shane Filan was telling her how spectacular she was, you could see that Sohyang was just beat! Not much of her usual permanent smile or bubbly personality. But she did respond with her 1000 Megawatt smile and giggles when he said he had a new version of You Raise Me Up that he was going to be playing a lot! 👀🙃💖💖💖
Childish Adult is a great one ! Jazz flavoured duet that she suits excellently ! Also ,A Thousand Days is also excellent with well known singer, composers and voice teacher for many Girl Groups in South Korea, and good friend of SoHyang, “ the One”.

It is a shame that her talent has been hidden compared to the other big names because of population or money.
Me yet again ! I have followed her for 13 years ! When I originally heard she wasn’t well for this Performance it was conveyed that she had had Pneumonia and was recently released from the Hospital! I believe it was probably maybe 5 days or so before her Performance, so she would have time do make any changes and as days went by gradually sing a little more of the song so the day before she could sing it all! She would think her Doctor was asking too much for her not to sing in show and try to go on! Her Family would have tied her down if she went from hospital to Perform! She would be determined but reasonable! Over the years people hear it differently, a little creative licence! No doubt it was still very difficult to reach this kind of Quality, vocal ! She is a Vocal Beast !! Love You SoHyang!
