  • This popular bean dish from New England is probably older than the USA itself. Boston baked beans contain molasses, mustard and sometimes a bit of vinegar. Salt pork or bacon are sometimes added. As a slow-cooked dish, Boston baked beans could be prepared on Saturday night ready for consumption after church on the Sabbath when no work was permitted.

Boston Baked Beans, brown bread, and hot dogs are a standard Saturday night dinner in Boston, and much of New England.

Salt the beans like you did. Salting them at the beginning prevents them from ever getting soft.
    Ya done good.

Spot on! I had plenty of BBB growing up. Bacon instead of pork belly, and kombu is a completely new idea to me. I will have to try that. Now I have a craving. I’ll have to make a batch.

Ey up me lad Keef. Aye, that Boston baked beans dish sounds a bit fancy with all them molasses and mustard, but I’m a bit skeptical about owt American when it comes to baked beans. It looks alright, but nowt can beat a proper tin of good old British baked beans. I reckon I'll stick to what I know and love, ta very much!

In my childhood and youth I had more than my share of English baked beans. In school they would cover everything, no matter what it was was covered with big scoop of baked beans until it almost came out of my nose. I like beans in many variations and what you made looks very interesting. It would be very difficult for me to find the ingredients where I live though. Have to make a pass on this one

I do keep a container labelled "Organic Crystalline Kombu Extract" in my cupboard to stop people whining about it. If you know, you know.
