  • Welcome back to the channel. In this video we show you how to test your temperature gauge on your vehicle. Today we are testing it on a 1972 Ford Bronco with a 302 V-8.
    This process will is geared towards older vehicles and the concept and process will apply to many different types of vehicles.
    Please be careful and make sure that your engine isn't hot when trying to do this test. I don't want you to get burned!

    Of the endless videos out there telling us how to do this check, yours is by far the most direct and, as a result, helpful. Thank you.

    Thank you. I really appreciate that. I'm have a 1966 f 100 and am learning to work on it. I have the shop manual but video reference really helps me SEE the procedure and makes all the difference. Thanks again friend. Great video!👍

    Appreciate the video and smart simple diagnosis but to a newbie like me I couldn't really see where you attached the clips. Perhaps have a second person to film and do closeup videography under the hood. Thanks and Happy New Year.

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback. Sorry it wasn't more clear on clip locations for you. Sometimes I am able to have a 2nd person help, but in most cases it is just me in the garage. Connect 1 clip to the end of the temperature wire (on an older Ford 302 that is on top of the engine block near the front pointed to location in video) and then ground the other clip. I used the engine exhaust header bolt for my grounding point.

    I have a 1953 Ford the temperature gauge stays stuck on hot even when you first start the engine it is still stuck on hot I replace the temperature sending unit. could it be that the gauge needle is broken

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem

      It is very possible that the gauge is bad since you already replace the sending unit. Other possibility is bad wiring.

    Do i hook up the clips to both holes in the wire harness?

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem

      There should be one wire going from the temperature gauge in the vehicle to the temp sensor in the engine bay. Disconnect the wire from the sensor and attach one banana clip to it and the other banana clip to the exhaust header to ground it out.

    @dannysaavedra3980 Před rokem

    I did that test and it shows the same results as yours, the temp needle goes up when u grounded the cable and then I changed the sensor and still the temp not working, what could be the problem ? Or how do I test the sensor it self to make sure is not defective one ? Thanks

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem +2

      If you tested from the wire at the sensor and the gauge works. It demonstrates that the gauge and wire are good all the way to the sensor which leaves the sensor itself. Since it is a new sensor and still doesn't work, my first thought is that the connection between the wire and sensor is not good or you maybe got a faulty sensor which can happen from time to rime. Other than that, not sure.

    If it is a 2 wire connector that goes to the sensor, as is the case on my 93 f250, how do you test that?

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem

      Good question. I unfortunately don't have an answer for you. If/when you do find out, it would be great if you are willing to share it here for others to know. Good luck.

    Tried this idea on my 70 pontiac and it fried the wire and blew the fuse, so it doesn't seem to work on GM's with guages

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem

      Hmmmm, that is odd. Sorry to hear that happened. Sounds like there is something else going on.. Grounding out the temp Guage wire like it was demonstrated in the video wouldn't fry a wire or blow a fuse. I wish you the best of luck in finding out the issue.

      Oh it is all good, i was hoping that would help determine, been a head scratcher, there is power to the wire when i test it, so not sure. Thanks for the reply

    When I ground the wire only moves a quarter. Wires are fine. Any suggestions?

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před rokem

      Since you bypassed the sensor and the wiring is good..Chances are it is a bad gauge.

  • @jamesortega8681

    another vlog says the opposite, he said if it went all the way up then sender is faulty while you say its working im confused now czcams.com/video/c61qZtIAbAE/video.htmlsi=MW-snvZ03EPF-y5o

    • @ShawnsEarlyBroncos
      @ShawnsEarlyBroncos  Před měsícem +1

      If you are testing the gauge and you apply voltage to the gauge, the gauge needle should move up and will go all the way up if you continue to provide it voltage. If the needle doesn't move, it is not working. Testing the gauge with voltage, it would go all the way up because it is a test giving direct voltage.
      Now, on a separate test, if you are testing the sensor and the needle goes all the way up or doesn't move at all, the sensor is probably bad because it should be registering the average temperature for your vehicle while the vehicle is on, but on the safe side f the gauge doesn't move, it is good to test the gauge to make sure it is working before replacing the sensor.
