    Here are English sentences for you to practice with! Translate into Korean:
    1. I ate pizza because I was hungry.
    2. Call me tomorrow because now I'm busy.
    3. I can't run because my foot hurts.
    Also, one more thing I forgot to add! -아서/어서/여서 is the go-to conjugation before greeting phrases like 반갑습니다, 감사합니다, 죄송합니다, etc.
    (CORRECT) 만나서 반갑습니다. 도움 주셔서 감사합니다.
    (INCORRECT) 만나니까 반갑습니다. 도움 주시니까 감사합니다.
    And finally a quick disclaimer: there are a lot of other ways to use these grammar forms but I've only covered the basics to help you tell apart the three. Grammar is unfortunately a many-headed monster. 😖

    Unpopular opinion: I'm loving learning Korean because there are lots of nuances (-니까, -어서...; -던, -았던...; -이라도, -더라도, -면...). Those are some of those I've learnt :). Korean is a language of intentions!

    I just want to say that your videos are always very welcome, informative and super clear. You have a very good teaching style, and I hope you keep this up! :)
    Also, don't worry about the length of your videos too much, I think people here want to learn about Korean as much as possible, the more examples you use the better (or at least, that's how I feel anyways). If you posted a 2-hour video I would totally watch it ^^ While on this, have you thought about doing some chill live sessions here on youtube where people can ask you random questions on grammar and stuff for 1h or so? It might be a way to have "longer videos" without the stress of having to prepare a specific topic. Just my 2c.
    Anyways, I'll look forward to your next upload :)

It is interesting that these expressions when I first learned them sounded like 'this so 아/어서 ', 'that's why - (으)니가' and 'because of - 기 때문에' and that's how I want to translate them when asked. I am an emerging intermediate so still early in my learning.

  • @CyberMew
    @CyberMew Před 3 lety +4

    Comparison between grammar points is what we need. We always learn grammar points by itself and it’s confusing when described in a high level way. I’ve been kinda struggling with this for literally years, and it’s really nice to see this technically broken down, compared, and list some of the do’s and don’ts for once. Not a lot do this! If you have Patreon let us know!
    I still have some questions.. Will 돈이 없으시니까 여행을 못 해요 work too? Sounds logical to me if both 서/니까 is applied.. kinda confusing here 😅
    In one of your examples, you mentioned there should be no imperatives for ~서, but this sounds ok to me, should it be incorrect? 저 시간이 없어서 빨리 와요.

    • @YourKoreanSaem
      @YourKoreanSaem  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi, thanks for your feedback!
      돈 없어서 여행 못 해요 sounds more natural than 으니까. 으니까 is used for imperatives or for making subjective assumptions and this sentence is neither. Also -으시니까 is honorifics that can’t be used on yourself.
      시간 없어서 is incorrect if you want to say 빨리 와요. 시간 없으니까 is correct for imperatives. :)

    • @ultratwin
      @ultratwin Před rokem +1

      Great question. Keep in mind that *[v. + 아/아/여 서] is not always the causative ending* as illustrated in the above video. In fact, it just as commonly it operates as a "comma" between two verbs (two clauses) when there is an action to immediately follow. In this case, the "go home" and "rest" happen in sequence and in the same place, which naturally makes use of [v. + 아/아/여 서] to put a space between the two actions. This is essential in early-intermediate Korean language courses, and one will need to listen to context, in order to make the distinction between "causal" and "sequential" use of this form.
      But also be careful...this extremely common clausal ending is also often misused, namely confusion between [v. + 고] and [v. + 아/어/여 서], for example ~하고/ ~hago vs. ~해서/ ~haeseo. For example, what is allowed to be implied after one says in the “I went home, and…” clause 집에 가서 vs. 집에 가고 in a sequence of events is a huge point of error. In short, 집에 가고 has a "full stop" and implies that what follows does not happen right away. This is why the "why don't you spend the night?" Expression "자고 가" is literally "sleep and go" and would make no sense if one said "자서 가".
