Turf cutting in Co.Antrim with a few 60 year old tractors and traditional spades. The turf is dried and burned as fuel for heating. Music by The Ingram Brothers / @theingrambrothers5321
I'm digging on those tractors. There's nothing like an old tractor. And the idea of digging up dirt and burning it is about the coolest thing. I didn't know anything like that existed.
Grand to see you're still cutting by hand, and on a small scale. Your great grandchildren will be burning peat from this bog, just as your great grandfather's did. It's another bond to the land your family farm, and your own history 👍
Love to see the way turf used to be cut with the space and the furgie I have been during for 10 years now in 11 great to see old classics I drive a case David brown 1294 and zetor crystal 8111

Emil Mose Rasmussen Its probably more for tradition nowadays rather than practicality, however it's a good (if not especially green) fuel, and I'm imagining they own the land so it's essentially free heat.
august, it is dried and used as fuel in a stove or open fire. Not many people use it now but we still cut and dry some just to keep the tradition alive.
got you know, i've asked the same question! My father explained that it cleans any material stuck to the cutting edge and it is a muscle memory thing which helps you line up the next cut.
420 its for fuel. That earth is peat which is full of organic matter that has not fully broken down due to the acidity of the soil therefore when it drys it can be burned
You can't be too far away, seen your vid at Tullygarley. We made the video up the road at Magherabeg. I enjoy a wee tune on the fife too😉 czcams.com/video/WCKDVbvrN2U/video.html
a20dmd how deep can you harvest ??? Thanks for the reply. Im a chimney sweep from Pennsylvania USA and had a customer ask about burning this and i told them i would get back to them with my findings
you are pretty much looking at the full depth in the video. The top 2 or 3 feet is younger, less dense, poorer quality material which will burn, but isn't really worth the effort to get it dried, so it is thrown back down to build up the standing area for the tractors. You can see the step in the bank. Turf/peat is a dirty fuel which produces quite a lot of ash and soot. My parents burn it regularly in their stove and fire. Their chimneys needs cleaned at least once per year. Wood and coal are better fuels, but we just do it to keep the tradition going.
in a couple million years that dirt will turn to coal it plant and wood broken down i believe if im not 100% correct he will correct me but thats my understanding
It's plant matter that never properly decayed meaning that it has a high carbon content. There isn't sclica as it's formed from thousands of years of decaying plant matter and not the break down of rock
They let it dry on the banks for 4 weeks then stack it for 3 more weeks .transport it to the sheds at the dwelling House and burn the sods of turf in a range or stove. Use it for heating and cooking
Mustafa ATA it is cut, dried and used as fuel in the fire. Ireland has no coal or oil this was hiw people heated their homes and cooked their food in rural areas.
Is it worth to work like this with primitive technology?.Why do they do not use construction machines and hydrolic press ?For example a backhoe loader and cylinder press to shape the turf again like wood
ciaran devaney no it would I had three might have fuel them every 2 months there gone now and I bought a fordson major and it's the same with that uses very little fuel
Yes, clewarly they are ignorant farmers who are too stupid to think of a thing like that, and need you to explain it to them. A home fuel tank holds several hundred gallons of fuel, and a tractor like that can work all day off of a 10 gallon tank. It's not exactly hauling a deep plow at full throttle for hours on end. By your logic firewood is completely obsolete as a fuel because you could just spend the money you used on fuel and equipment on heating fuel. Except that people smarter than you have done the math and decided it pays. Even if it didn't there are people who would gladly pay the extra cost to enjoy a wood or peat fire once in a while, so you'd STILL have to go out and cut it. A fuel-oil fire is nothing like as warm and cozy and enjoyable as a woodfire, and I assume a peat fire. Never had occasion to try one around here. Our family does still heat with coal though.
I'm digging on those tractors. There's nothing like an old tractor. And the idea of digging up dirt and burning it is about the coolest thing. I didn't know anything like that existed.
Well done,great music,great to see the hand cutting,nice little terrier,and that v8 fergie,neat job.
Did this as a teenager, a hot bath is highly recommended afterwards 👌
This video is hypnotic, but I've no idea why!!!
V8 is lethal. Judging by the brakes on any grey fergie I ever drove, there might be a problem getting it stopped lol.
Love Ingram Brothers. Good song.

I hope so!

Great idea! I'm forener, live in co. Donegal. I would like to try cutting torf like you guys!!!
Great video lads.living in Canada now.miss cutting the turf with the uncles little 35
Powerfull video. Enjoyed watching.
Great little video - Well done lads, very much enjoyed it
My father in sligo used to cut downwards rather than horizontally interesting to see the different methods used in other parts of ireland
Yup, most people cut downward, but some "banks" of turf were easier got at like this was, a "breast" Slaen it's called.
Beautiful video and work !
Henry Rollin
lovely tractors
We do this in mayo ireland with a. david brown 995 with trailer
Love your video dude
O vídeo ficou fantástico, parabéns a família e os meninos pela iniciativa de registrar o trabalho.
Great video I enjoyed
Great video didnt even know people still cut turf with a sleán my bog and all bogs around it cut with the machine

Good stuff lads.

is that under all green grass lands in ireland?
I wish I was this organized in my moss
The folks around here seemed to take pride in it.
very good
If im correct the 2nd song is copperhead road. Good somg choices.
Yep 2nd song is chopperhead road
Brilliant 🙂
Great video and I love the music. But what's the turf used for?
Norman McGill they dry it out then they burn it
Nice music....
Awesome! Fergie TE20's?
great video lads only thing missing is a wee dexta 😃
Mop da dexta
What do you do?
I would easily do that job if I had the chance
We use a digger to cut our turf because we have a lot of bog land
great video but who is the singer
Do czego to się robi?
You burn these, correct? How long do they burn compared to wood?
Slightly less heat and burn time than wood, but produce more ash. We just do it to keep the tradition going.
Jesus the v8 is mental lol
That's the best part about old tractors

I'm amazed that people still do this
Emil Mose Rasmussen Its probably more for tradition nowadays rather than practicality, however it's a good (if not especially green) fuel, and I'm imagining they own the land so it's essentially free heat.
Song pls at the start
is this oeat for fuel sorry I've never seen this brfore
kory league, yes it is dried and burned, as fuel. The peats cut at the bottom are more dense and give more heat than those at the top of the bank.
Where im from turf is another name for grass /lawn.
How much turf as in 50kg fert bags did they get donkeys to carry in creels or drag I wonder?
my dad who's in the video says he can remember bringing them home with a donkey and cart. I think he was quite a character (the donkey😂).
What is this stuff and what is it used for ?
august, it is dried and used as fuel in a stove or open fire. Not many people use it now but we still cut and dry some just to keep the tradition alive.
if you google Irish peat bog you'll get a better explanation.
Thank you for the quick response. Great video and you guys must be tough doing all that diggin !
august no problem. It's only a few days cutting each year. If it was more we'd be a bit thinner!
august we mostly use machines for this
Please explain the turf cutting ? Why do it. What is it
The blocks are dried during the summer and can be burned as fuel in a stove or open fire in the winter.
What's the idea of the initial back drag on the top?
Darren Bohan it's a lower density peat "newer" layer which does not burn so well. It is removed and thrown down in to fill the hole as we advance.
a20dmd sorry I mean on the individual sods
got you know, i've asked the same question! My father explained that it cleans any material stuck to the cutting edge and it is a muscle memory thing which helps you line up the next cut.
please song interprete

Who is the singer of the first song? And the name?

Luther Blankenship Hi, it is dried and burned as fuel.
Ok thanks
So this is where store bought brownies come from
i've never heard about that ''turf'' what's means ?
it is cut and dried during summer and then burned as heating fuel in winter.

a20dmd glad to hear it my friend 12th is coming round very fast.
How old is the area being harvested????
mike 05 I believe it is vegetation left behind by an ancient forest which formed after the ice age and was cleared between 1000 to 2000 years ago
a20dmd how deep can you harvest ??? Thanks for the reply. Im a chimney sweep from Pennsylvania USA and had a customer ask about burning this and i told them i would get back to them with my findings

Why Cutting ?
tinnakon kheowree it is dried during the the summer, and burned as fuel in the winter for heat and cooking.
a20dmd how the hell can you burn dirt?
in a couple million years that dirt will turn to coal it plant and wood broken down i believe if im not 100% correct he will correct me but thats my understanding
Silica cannot turn into carbon lmao
It's plant matter that never properly decayed meaning that it has a high carbon content. There isn't sclica as it's formed from thousands of years of decaying plant matter and not the break down of rock

Simply love irish tradition love the irish full stop ❤

Do you have peat bogs in the US?

what is the main objective
Mustafa ATA it is cut, dried and used as fuel in the fire. Ireland has no coal or oil this was hiw people heated their homes and cooked their food in rural areas.
Is this ground clay?
no, it is many layers of vegetation that were layed down in very wet conditions over 1000's of years.
This is a long-standing wait, so we do not have it in turkey
You don't have it in Turkey because it's too dry. But you probably have coal and oil, which are made the same way, only they take much longer.
A mf 135 whoud u better but still the 20 is storng
Is it worth to work like this with primitive technology?.Why do they do not use construction machines and hydrolic press ?For example a backhoe loader and cylinder press to shape the turf again like wood
Hi it's just done like this, because that's the way it's been cut and dried for 100s of years. (without the tractors obviously😂.)
They want to stop This Tradition as Well , I Wish People would leave our Tradition to us,
the money spent on fuelling the tractors could easily have payed for a full tank of home heating oil
ciaran devaney you obviously don't know how little fuel a fergie uses.
With weight in the back it'll drink it
ciaran devaney no it would I had three might have fuel them every 2 months there gone now and I bought a fordson major and it's the same with that uses very little fuel
Are you bored today Ciaran? Spending your time trolling youtube videos🤣

You guys couldn't just burn wood like normal people?
Adam Rycroft, would you define trolling youtube videos "normal"?
Adam roycroft what wood.Peat is burned because wood is not locally available
